Hollywood Icon, 80, Appears in a New Movie With Son After Career Confession
Michael Douglas said he wouldn't go back to acting unless a 'special' opportunity presented itself – and it looks like the perfect project fell in his lap.
The TODAY show shared the first teaser for the upcoming film Looking Through Water, a movie in which Michael, 80, will star alongside his eldest son, Cameron Douglas. In the clip, the Hollywood legend was seen in character as he chatted with a seemingly troubled young boy, who displayed a massive black eye. While sitting in a fishing boat in a pond-like body of water, dramatic clips of the movie flashed on screen, introducing Cameron, 46, to viewers.
Looking Through Water follows a family's troubled dynamic, bouncing from one storyline to another – all while intertwined. Michael's character, however, will attempt to repair an estranged relationship with his son while competing in a fishing competition together.
Walker Scobell, David Morse, Michael Stahl-David, Ximena Romo and Tamara Tunie will also star in the film.
Looking Through Water will premiere in theatres on September 12.
Michael and Cameron's onscreen collaboration marks more than two decades since they first co-starred in the 2003 film It Runs in the Family.
The Fatal Attraction star welcomed Cameron with ex-wife Diandra Luker on December 13, 1978. Michael later welcomed his youngest children, Dylan Douglas and Carys Douglas, during his marriage to his current wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The news of Michael's new movie may come as a shock to some fans, as the Wall Street actor recently shared that he is slowly closing the curtain on his acting career.
"I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop,' Michael told Variety in July of his battle with stage 4 cancer following his 2010 diagnosis. 'I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set. I have no real intentions of going back. I say I'm not retired because if something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise, no."

And then, the shooting pains in my legs and back began, which resulted in me having to sleep in a recliner for a month because laying down was too painful," she wrote at the time. "On Thanksgiving Eve, I had emergency MRIs done at the hospital, which revealed an abnormal mass in my spinal cord." She was eventually diagnosed with the "extremely rare type" of cancer. Grammy nominee JP Saxe is honest about tour cancellation: 'I didn't sell enough tickets'
Canadian musician JP Saxe is not shying away from the reason why he canceled his North America tour. The Grammy-nominated artist revealed on Aug. 1 that his team had to call off his fall tour. The announcement came after he posted a July 30 TikTok video telling fans that his tour would be canceled if he didn't sell around 20,000 more tickets within the next 48 hours. While Saxe later confirmed that the TikTok post helped boost sales, he said it wasn't enough to save the music tour. In an Aug. 1 guest column published in Variety, the soulful pop singer opened about not meeting his goal, writing: "I aimed too high — my bad." "Due to unforeseen circumstances… The circumstance: I didn't sell enough tickets," Saxe wrote. "Last week, my team told me we were going to have to cancel my fall tour. Ticket sales weren't where they needed to be. The suggestion was: take the L, try again next year." Saxe proceeded to thank those who bought tickets, adding that his fans are "more than enough for me emotionally, just… not pragmatically." Despite the defeat, he remains optimistic that one day he'll pack venues with ease. "Very few artists want to be sleeping in their car eating ramen, but every artist wants to say they used to sleep in their car eating ramen," he wrote. "If I really believe (which I do) that I'm going to sell out arenas someday… then I also have to believe in how much better it'll feel when I get there — knowing I can tell the story about that one time, in the fall of 2025, when despite the support of a few thousand beautiful strangers on the internet… I had to cancel my whole tour." He said he received messages from other musicians calling him bold and "absurdly brave" for being vulnerable. Saxe is a Canadian singer-songwriter largely known for his track "If the World Was Ending," a collaboration with Julia Michaels that landed the pair a 2021 Grammy nomination in the Song of the Year category.
