
High blood pressure cases rise – three ways to prevent hypertension at home
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common condition that affects a third of adults in the UK and can cause stroke, heart attack and kidney failure if left untreated
A dietician has shared some ways to lower blood pressure at home. High blood pressure – also known as hypertension – affects one in three adults across the UK, significantly increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and even dementia. Often going under the radar without any symptoms, many people often are oblivious to their condition until it causes other health issues.
Despite the NHS rolling out health checks for those over 40 and pharmacies offering blood pressure screenings, the number of hypertension diagnoses continues to rise, especially among younger people. The NHS has previously reported that a lack of exercise, unhealthy eating habits, and excessive alcohol consumption are the biggest risk factors for hypertension, but chronic stress can also be a cause.
Professor Jacob George, chair of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Dundee, expressed his concern to the Daily Mail: "I've been doing this clinic for 20 years. When I started, roughly one in five people with hypertension referred to me were below the age of 30. That's easily doubled.
"Now I'd say one in three referred to me are young, and obesity is the main driver – it really is one of the biggest challenges we face."
Now, dietician Courtney Kassis has shared her top tips that she urges clients to follow in order to naturally bring down their blood pressure or prevent the condition entirely.
"My client just [lowered his blood pressure] in one month after our first appointment," the nutrition specialist said in her video. "Here are three nutrition strategies I recommend to all of my clients with high blood pressure that can improve your numbers within weeks."
Limit processed foods and added sugar
"Number one, limit processed foods and added sugars. Insulin resistance and overall inflammation is very closely tied to elevated blood pressure," she said.
"Limit foods like sugary drinks, refined carbohydrates that cause significant blood sugar spikes. And ultra-processed foods with inflammatory ingredients that can also drive elevated insulin levels and inflammation."
According to the British Heart Foundation, eating too many ultra-processed foods increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.
More than half of the typical British daily diet is made up of ultra-processed food, including breakfast cereals, ready meals, frozen pizzas, sweets and biscuits.
Eat more whole foods
"Second is eat more whole foods. Incorporating more non-starchy veggies, low-glycaemic fruits, nuts and seeds regularly will deliver essential nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and fibre, crucial for managing blood pressure," Courtney said.
The NHS advises that we should all strive to consume at least five portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables daily, which should constitute about a third of the food we eat each day. This could be fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced. Starchy foods, such as pasta, rice and potatoes, should also account for a third of our daily food intake, serving as a good source of energy.
We should also aim to include some protein in every meal. This could come from dairy, vegetable sources like lentils and beans, or lean cuts of meat and mince. It's also recommended to have at least two portions of fish every week, one of which should be an oily variety like salmon or mackerel.
Swap out table salt
Courtney suggested a swap when it comes to salt: "When it comes to salt, swap your table salt for sea salt which contains essential minerals for blood pressure control. Sea salt in moderation can provide these essential minerals."
Both table salt and sea salt, along with all other types of salt, can contribute to high blood pressure if consumed excessively due to their sodium content, according to the British Heart Foundation.
The NHS reports that adults should not consume more than 6g of salt a day (around one levelled teaspoon). Consuming too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
If you suspect you have high blood pressure or are at risk of developing it, the NHS advises scheduling an appointment with your GP. This is also recommended if you're over 40 years old and haven't had your blood pressure checked in more than five years.
Some pharmacies and workplaces also provide blood pressure tests.

Question Time sees woman share 10-year health battle in debate on 'failing' NHS
Question Time on BBC One tonight featured a debate around the NHS in Scotland and how one in three people are turning to private healtcare due to long waiting lists A woman described how she felt she was "failed" by the NHS on two separate occasions in a poignant moment on tonight's Question Time. This week's debate took place in St Andrews in Fife, Scotland with host Fiona Bruce sitting on the panel alongside Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP, Anas Sarwar MSP, Andrew Bowie MP, Thomas Kerr and Lesley Riddoch. A large part of the BBC show tonight was centered around whether Scotland's NHS is "dying before our eyes". Anas Sarwar, leader Scottish labour highlighted how one in three people are forced to go private for healthcare and one audience member explained how she was part of that shocking statistic. The female audience member asked, "I'd just be interested to know how you measure the improvements that you're seeing in the NHS if you're saying that the waiting lists are going down? Is it not just because more people are going private? Just today I was getting a private surgery having been failed by the NHS twice." The woman, who did not disclose the nature of the surgery she needed, went on to explain how she was forced to turn to private healthcare after being "failed" by the NHS on two separate occasions. She added: "I first got this looked at nearly 10 years ago by an NHS specialist dermatologist who didn't think there was anything to be concerned about, I followed up again a year ago, I was told the same thing and I'm not blaming these doctors who are very pushed for time, I work in healthcare myself but then I went to see a private doctor because I am fortunate to have the means to be able to pay for private health insurance and as soon as they saw it they immediately rushed me to have it removed. But I firmly believe that healthcare should be accessible to everyone and it should be equal, but I've kind of been forced into this situation where I don't want to deny myself the healthcare that I can afford but it shouldn't be at the expense of others." In response Thomas Kerr, representing Reform UK, explained "too many people are going private," and said "the NHS isn't working in it's current system, it does have to be looked into and it does have to be reformed". He added: "Just throwing money at it doesn't work, we've seen that time and time again, we've had record funding in th NHS that is still not working for people on the ground." When asked by Fiona if he supported the idea of a mixed economy like the French system he added: "As long as healthcare is free at the point of need for anyone who needs it then I don't mind where someone gets their healthcare at all. If you can afford it and you want to pay it privately then that's entirely up to a person individually." He went on to address the problem in Scotland of the number of doctors leaving the NHS, he said: "We have a higher tax system in Scotland which is making people who are learning in our universities like here in St Andrews are then leaving to go down to England or to go travel abroad, I think we have to look at the tax system in Scotland to make sure it is fair to try and keep our home grown talent here to make sure the NHS works." Mr Kerr was then grilled about Brexit by broadcaster and commentator Lesley Riddoch. She said: "Right Thomas, what happened to the £380m quid a week we were going to get from Brexit?" She went on to say: "We've got a bit of a mess going on with healthcare here, we've got a static life expectancy which is shameful given the amount of wealth there is in this country and overall our health is not great." Boots and Specsavers to take over NHS care
Companies such as Boots and Specsavers will offer more NHS care under plans to shift services onto the high street. Wes Streeting said a 10-year health plan would set out a much greater role for private companies in carrying out checks normally done in hospital. The Health Secretary also said shifting care out of hospitals into the community would mean more services in shopping areas, close to people's homes, to make them more convenient. Mr Streeting said: 'There's definitely a role for high street players like Boots and Specsavers to help cut NHS waiting lists and to help provide great care and services and advice to patients as part of the wider primary care team.' Under the plans, GPs will take a bigger role leading neighbourhood health services, which could bring a range of services together. This could result in pharmacies offering a wider range of checks and services, and high street opticians carrying out assessments and diagnostics for common eye conditions, he suggested. Mr Streeting said the plans would aim to create 'a real partnership between GPs and other parts of the primary care system' – instead of them scrapping over resources. He said the shift away from hospitals would see more NHS services, including those run directly by the NHS, on the high street. Last year the NHS launched a scheme that means people can consult pharmacists about seven common conditions – including sore throats, earache and urinary tract infections – instead of having to make an appointment with a doctor. Health officials are looking to expand the role of pharmacists further, dealing with a wider range of conditions, relieving pressures on GP surgeries. Hospitals could also take over the running of GP practices, as part of efforts to improve access to care across neighbourhoods. Last week the Health Secretary said he would not shrink from leaning more heavily on the private sector to improve access to NHS care. Wes Streeting said he 'refused to be bound by outdated ideological battles', saying using independent hospitals to provide taxpayer-funded care did not contradict the principles of the health service. Writing for The Telegraph he said he would fight for the future of the NHS, warning of a 'national emergency' facing the country. Mr Streeting made the comments as new figures showed that almost 1.4 million people have had private care on the NHS since Labour won the election. Next week he will launch a 10-year plan for the NHS, which promises three major shifts – from hospital to community, from analogue to digital and from treating sickness to prevention, with private sector involvement expected to play a key role. Elsewhere under the plans, patients will be able to refer themselves for therapy through the NHS app. Instead of having to turn to costly mental health apps, the NHS app 'offers a free service built by trusted clinicians', according to a spokesman. Some 6,700 more mental health workers have been recruited since July 2024. Mr Streeting said: 'Not getting the right support for your mental health isn't just debilitating, it can hit a painful pause button on your life – stopping you working, enjoying time with family and friends, or living day-to-day life. 'Patients have faced the crisis of access to mental health services for far too long, and this Government is determined to change that through our Plan for Change to rebuild the NHS. 'That's why we're putting digital front doors on mental health services for patients up and down the country and harnessing technology to provide 24-hour care. And we're creating more opportunities for support not just through the NHS App but through care in your community too. 'We are already over halfway towards our target of recruiting 8,500 extra mental health workers, and through our upcoming 10 year health plan we will get more people back to health and back to work.'

Hope for Britain's ash trees as study finds resistance evolving to killer fungus
Researchers from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Queen Mary University of London say they have discovered a new generation of young ash trees in the wild which are showing greater resistance to the fungus compared to older trees. The findings from the study focused on Marden Park wood in Surrey, a semi-natural ancient woodland dominated by ash, which is a species that produces a large number of seedlings from each adult. It could mean ash does not go the same way as elms, which have been largely lost from the British landscape as a result of Dutch elm disease, the scientists said – although breeding programmes may be needed to bolster the fightback. Ash dieback, which was first seen in the UK in 2012, causes leaf loss and crown dieback and can lead to tree death, with fears it could wipe out up to 85% of Britain's native ash trees, as they have not evolved natural defences against the fungus originally from Asia. But now researchers suggest that natural selection in the wild is taking place on thousands of locations within ash tree DNA, driving increased resistance to the disease. The study compared the DNA of ash trees established before and after the fungus arrived in Britain, and found shifts in variants associated with tree health in thousands of places across the overall genome of the trees. This indicates the younger generation of trees has greater resistance to the fungus – as well as showing natural selection for a trait being influenced by multiple genes, which the researchers said was a phenomenon that was widely assumed but difficult to prove. Their study in the journal Science said natural selection could be occurring partly due to reduced seed or pollen production by adult trees damaged by ash dieback, and partly through the rapid death of young trees infected by the fungus and so are not present in the wood. But they cautioned that it was not yet known whether the rate of change would be enough to rescue the plants naturally, or whether there was enough genetic variation in ash trees to lead to a fully resistant tree. The findings could be used to support breeding programmes that aim to make European ash trees resilient to the disease, they added. Study author Dr Carey Metheringham, from Kew and Queen Mary, said: 'Thanks to natural selection, future generations of ash should have a better chance of withstanding infection. 'However, natural selection alone may not be enough to produce fully resistant trees. 'The existing genetic variation in the ash population may be too low, and as the trees become scarcer, the rate of selection could slow. 'Human intervention, such as selective breeding and the protection of young trees from deer grazing, may be required to accelerate evolutionary change.' Another of the study's authors, Professor Richard Buggs, from Kew and Queen Mary, said: 'We are so glad that these findings suggest that ash will not go the way of the elm in Britain. 'Elm trees have struggled to evolve to Dutch elm disease, but ash are showing a very different dynamic because they produce an abundance of seedlings upon which natural selection can act when they are still young. 'Through the death of millions of ash trees, a more resistant population of ash is appearing.' Rebecca Gosling, from the Woodland Trust which owns and manages Marden Park wood, said: 'Ash dieback demonstrates how devastating introduced pathogens can be for our trees and the species which rely upon them. 'This important research gives us hope for the future of our ash populations.' She added: 'The findings highlight how vital it is to support natural regeneration in woodlands, furthering our understanding of how to best manage our ash woodlands.' The study was mainly funded by the Environment Department (Defra) whose chief plant health officer Professor Nicola Spence said it demonstrated that tolerance to ash dieback can be inherited, and breeding programmes and natural regeneration together could secure the future of native ash.
