Vietnam braced for Typhoon Wipha on Monday as coastal provinces were placed on emergency alert and airlines canceled flights ahead of the storm's expected landfall early Tuesday.
The storm has already proved deadly in the Philippines, where it intensified monsoon rains and killed at least three people over the weekend. It also hit parts of China and Hong Kong.

Over 38,000 vehicles added to PH roads in July

Over 38,000 vehicles were added to Philippine roads in July, lower than the sales recorded in June amid weather-related disruptions that affected retail operations, data released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) on Thursday showed. There were 38,295 units sold in July, 5.4% lower than the 40,483 units sold in the previous month, and 2.6% lower than the 39,331 units sold in the same month last year. This comes as retail operations were affected by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, and tropical cyclones that hit the country late July — Crising (international name: Wipha), Dante (international name: Francisco), and Emong (international name: Co-may) — that have logged infrastructure damage of at least P7.355 billion, and a death toll of 34. 'The industry's continued growth, particularly in commercial segments, reflects strong market fundamentals and the agility of our members in navigating short-term challenges,' CAMPI president Atty. Rommel Gutierrez said in an emailed statement. Commercial vehicles accounted for 78.80% of total sales for the month with 30,175 units, while passenger cars accounted for the remaining 21.20% or 8,120. There were 22,523 light commercial vehicles sold during the month; 6,664 Asian utility vehicles (AUVs); 607 light-duty trucks and buses; 302 medium-duty trucks and buses; and 79 heavy-duty trucks and buses. A total of 2,401 units sold for the month were hybrid electric vehicles, 178 were battery electric vehicles, and 128 were plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. retained the top market player with 48.04% of sales, followed by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. with 19.0%, Nissan Philippines Inc. with 5.06%, Ford Group Philippines with 4.95%, and Suzuki Philippines Inc. with 4.69%. Year-to-date sales stood at 269,207 units, up by 1.4% from the 265,610 units sold in the same period of 2024. 'We are optimistic that the momentum will carry forward into the second half of the year,' Gutierrez said, noting new model launches, promotional campaigns, and improving consumer sentiment over the horizon. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Hong Kong lowers black rainstorm warning to red as Cyclone Podul triggers flooding, landslide alerts

Hong Kong lowered its black rainstorm warning to red late Thursday morning, August 14, after hours of intense rainfall brought by Tropical Cyclone Podul . The black signal, the highest in the city's system, had been issued at 7:50 a.m., marking the fifth such alert in two weeks. The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) reported rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters per hour in the Central and Western District, with landslide risks identified in the Southern District. 'Heavy rain will bring flash floods, and flooding is occurring or is expected to occur in watercourses. People should stay away from watercourses,' the HKO said. The HKO noted the city has recorded a record number of black rainstorm warnings since the system began. Class cancellations, court disruptions, and transport delays across Hong Kong In response to the severe weather, the Education Bureau canceled all day classes, while the Judiciary suspended morning hearings and prepared to extend the adjournments if warnings persisted past 11 a.m. Live Events Tropical Cyclone Podul, located about 260 kilometers northeast of Hong Kong at 9:30 a.m., was moving west-northwest at 30 kilometers per hour. The No. 1 typhoon signal remained in place, indicating a tropical cyclone is within 800 kilometers and may affect the territory. 'Podul is gradually departing from Hong Kong and weakening. However, under the influence of its intense outer rainbands, locally there are heavy squally showers and severe squally thunderstorms,' the HKO said in a 9:45 a.m. update. Knee-deep flooding was reported on Connaught Road West, blocking drains and stranding vehicles. Flooding also halted traffic at the Hong Kong Island exit of the Western Harbour Tunnel during the morning commute, worsening citywide transport disruptions. Hong Kong issues amber rainstorm warning signal amid heavy rain forecast The Drainage Services Department's Emergency Control Centre deployed 90 response units to 240 high-risk flood-prone locations across the territory. Crews carried out inspections, cleared blockages, and responded to multiple flooding reports in Central and Western District. No injuries were reported as of 10:30 a.m.

Heavy rains intensified by Typhoon Wipha inundated Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan province, yet the couple pressed on with their long-planned ceremony. Aguilar walked down the aisle with her dress floating behind her, while guests watched from flooded pews. 'We've been together for ten years. This is just another challenge we've overcome,' Verdillo said. Despite the weather, friends and family joined the celebration. More than 80,000 people remained in emergency shelters in the Philippines on Tuesday after floods, landslides and tidal surges caused by Typhoon Wipha.
