China's J-20 Fighter Is Now Flying In ‘Beast Mode'
New imagery has appeared showing the Chinese J-20 stealth fighter carrying external air-to-air missiles, mirroring the so-called 'beast mode' that we've seen on U.S. fifth-generation fighters. The development comes as China looks at various ways of increasing the number of primary weapons that the J-20 can accommodate internally, while also working on various new longer-range air-to-air missiles.
A video emerged recently showing a J-20 in flight, apparently fitted with eight PL-15 medium-to-long-range air-to-air missiles, carried in pairs on four underwing pylons. A screen capture from the same footage had begun to circulate late last year, although it wasn't immediately clear if it was genuine. The appearance of the video would seem to put at rest most of those concerns.

It's meanwhile also well known that the J-20 has underwing hardpoints, since we have seen the fighter in the past carrying four large external fuel tanks, as you can read about here.

In fact, when we first became aware of the J-20 carrying drop tanks, we surmised that, in the future, the stealth fighter would likely also appear with weapons under their wings.
In particular, we predicted that China's very long-range air-to-air missile, now known to be designated as the PL-17, could end up arming the J-20, and that it would be carried externally. After all, the huge missile does not fit in the fighter's weapons bay.
Now, however, it seems that the 'beast mode' J-20 is carrying additional examples of the PL-15 — the aircraft's standard medium-to-long-range air-to-air missile, reportedly able to hit targets at up to 124 miles. Already, the J-20 can carry four of these weapons in its main internal weapons bay.
They can be supplemented by two short-range PL-10 air-to-air missiles. These infrared-guided weapons are deployed via novel side weapons bays, which allow the missiles to be exposed on the outside of the aircraft, with the doors closed behind them. Returning to the PL-15, this is an incredibly important component of China's fast-developing airpower capabilities.
In the past, the U.S. Air Force has publicly said that the emergence of the PL-15 was a key factor in the decision to start the AIM-260 program, which seeks to provide a new air-to-air missile with a range longer than that of the now-standard AIM-120 AMRAAM.
The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) defense and security think tank determines that the PL-15 'out-ranges the U.S.-made AIM-120C/D AMRAAM series and has a comparable maximum range to the Meteor.' This long range may be achieved through the use of a dual-pulse rocket motor, although this remains unconfirmed.
While we don't know what — if anything — is in the internal weapons bays of the J-20 in the video, the potential for the aircraft to carry 12 PL-15s is very significant in terms of 'magazine depth,' although the penalty is the loss of the aircraft's low-observable characteristics.
This, however, is not necessarily a huge problem, if tactics are optimized to overcome it.
In this way, it would be expected that a stealthy flight of J-20s (with all-internal missiles) would work in concert with a flight of J-20s in 'beast mode.' With the stealthy flight operating ahead, they would then call on the more heavily armed jets behind them as a force-multiplier, thereby overcoming their limited air-to-air missile carriage capability.
In the same way, a J-20 in 'beast mode' could serve as something akin to an arsenal ship to support other tactical aircraft, including the forthcoming J-35 stealth fighter. China's Flanker-derivative series of fighters could also work in concert with stealthy J-20s in a similar fashion.
Beyond the PL-15, China is also working on other air-to-air missiles that are likely to be added to the J-20's armory.
These include the aforementioned PL-17, a very long-range missile that may well be intended primarily to target high-value assets, like tankers and airborne early warning aircraft. You can read more about this still-mysterious missile here. As mentioned previously, this would only be available for external carriage on the J-20, although it's unclear whether eight would be possible — four PL-17s underwing seems a much more likely maximum load-out with two being realistically more optimal for most missions.
These two missiles are likely to be joined before long by another weapon, tentatively dubbed PL-16, the design of which seems to have been driven by the requirement for the J-20 to accommodate six longer-range missiles internally. The PL-16 will likely be superficially similar to the PL-15 but will be a compressed-carriage missile. It is expected to feature an active electronically scanned array (AESA) seeker, a Mach 5-plus fly-out speed, and significant resistance to jamming.
This reflects similar trends in the United States, where, in addition to working on secretive new longer-range air-to-air missiles, there have been efforts to add more weapons to the F-22 and F-35, which are constrained by their internal weapons carriage — provided they are to retain their critical low-observability advantage.
The F-35 can only carry four internal AMRAAMs, which led to a program to develop the Sidekick weapons bay adapter, which will boost the number of internal AMRAAMs a Joint Strike Fighter can carry to six.
In fact, the eight missiles that we see in the video would introduce the prospect of a J-20 that can eventually carry 14 medium/long-range air-to-air missiles, complemented by the pair of PL-10 shorter-range weapons, for a whopping 16 missiles in total. For comparison, the F-22 could theoretically carry a similar loadout, although this never happens in practice, nor is it clear if it that configuration has been tested. One of the F-15EXs biggest selling points is the ability to carry 12 AIM-120s today and possibly more tomorrow, as magazine depth becomes a greater concern in the increasingly complex domain of air-to-air combat.
We still don't know whether this configuration is now operational or still in the test phase. It would seem likely, however, that we will learn more in due course and, at the same time, the development potentially opens up a much wider variety of external weapons carriage possibilities, too.

Air Force tests new ship-killing bomb variant
The Air Force has tested a new variation of its ship-killing Quicksink guided bomb to expand its options for taking out enemy vessels in a future war. In a June 4 statement, the service said it dropped a 500-pound version of Quicksink, made from a GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM, from a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber at Eglin Air Force Base's Gulf Test Range off the coast of Florida. Previous Quicksink tests were conducted with 2,000-pound bombs. Quicksink is the Air Force Research Laboratory's effort to strengthen its ability to take out enemy ships. This capability would be particularly important in the event of a conflict with China over Taiwan, which would likely involve grueling fighting in the Pacific Ocean and require U.S. forces to destroy Chinese ships. Previous tests used modified GBU-31 JDAMs to destroy target vessels. Those JDAMs are guided by GPS and use fins to steer towards the target as they fall. AFRL previously said that it redesigned the JDAM's nose plug to better suit it for maritime strikes. A stock JDAM nose might cause the bomb to carom off the surface of the water in unexpected directions instead of striking its target, AFRL said, but the Quicksink redesign is meant to keep it on target. Quicksink bombs do not travel under the water towards their target like traditional torpedoes. The Air Force says modifying existing guided bombs into Quicksink weapons would provide anti-ship capability at a lower cost than weapons like torpedoes. The Air Force said in its statement that the new Quicksink variant would expand the B-2's targeting reach by giving combatant commanders more options for striking enemy targets. AFRL declined to further detail how the 500-pound version provides more targeting options or when the latest test took place, citing security concerns. 'Quicksink offers an affordable, game-changing solution to rapidly and efficiently sink maritime targets,' Col. Dan Lehoski, commander of Eglin's 53rd Wing, said in a statement. 'AFRL's 500-pound Quicksink variant adds options for the warfighter and enhances operational flexibility.' AFRL said video of the latest test is classified and could not be released. But a previous video posted in 2022 shows a Quicksink bomb streaking towards an empty vessel before exploding, cleaving the ship in half and sending it underwater in a matter of seconds.

Can Scale AI and Alexandr Wang reignite Meta's AI efforts?
Meta is reportedly investing nearly $15 billion dollars in the data labeling firm Scale AI and taking a 49% stake in the startup, while also bringing on CEO Alexandr Wang to help lead a new 'superintelligence' lab within the company. The deal is reminiscent of Meta's previous large and risky bets, such as its $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp and its $1 billion Instagram purchase. At the time those mergers closed, many people suggested Meta had grossly overpaid for the platforms — and today's discourse is no different. There's no shortage of investors and founders who were left scratching their heads this weekend over Meta's latest tie-up. In the end, WhatsApp and Instagram became an integral part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's empire. The question is whether the Scale AI deal will similarly work in Meta's favor, proving Zuckerberg's prescient strategy yet again, or whether the company is grasping at straws in a misguided effort to catch up to rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. In this case, Meta isn't betting on an emerging social media app, but on the data used to train top AI models. For the last several years, leading AI labs such as OpenAI have relied on Scale AI to produce and label data that's used to train models. In recent months, Scale AI and its data annotation competitors have started hiring highly skilled people, such as PhD scientists and senior software engineers, to generate high-quality data for frontier AI labs. It may benefit Meta to have a close relationship with a data provider like Scale. Meta's leaders have complained about a lack of innovation around data in the company's leading AI teams, according to a person familiar with the matter. Earlier this year, Meta's GenAI unit launched Llama 4, a family of AI models that failed to match the capabilities of Chinese AI lab DeepSeek's models, and which was broadly seen as a disappointment. Not helping matters, Meta is trying to combat an attrition problem. According to data compiled by SignalFire, Meta lost 4.3% of its top talent to AI labs in 2024. Meta isn't just betting on Scale AI to reignite its AI efforts, but also on Wang to lead the aforementioned new superintelligence team. The 28-year-old CEO has proven himself to be a strong startup founder — he's known around Silicon Valley to be ambitious, a good salesman, and very well-connected. Over the past few months, Wang has been meeting with world leaders to discuss AI's impact on society. Wang hasn't led an AI lab of this sort before, however, and he doesn't have the same AI research background that many other AI lab leaders do, like Safe Superintelligence's Ilya Sutskever or Mistral's Arthur Mensch. That's perhaps why Meta is also said to be recruiting high-profile talent like DeepMind's Jack Rae to round out its new AI research group. The post-acquisition fate of Scale AI the company is a bit murky. The role of real-world data in AI model training is changing — some AI labs have brought data collection efforts in-house, while others have increased their reliance on synthetic (i.e. AI-generated) data. In April, The Information reported that Scale AI had missed some of its revenue targets. According to Anyscale co-founder Robert Nishihara, several frontier AI labs are exploring novel ways to leverage and optimize data, many of which are quite compute-intensive. 'Data is a moving target,' Nishihara told TechCrunch in an interview. 'It's not just a finite effort to catch up — you have to innovate.' It's possible that Meta and Wang's relationship could scare off other AI labs that have traditionally worked with Scale AI. If so, this deal could be a boon for Scale AI's competitors, such as Turing, Surge AI, and even nonconventional data providers such as the recently launched LM Arena. Turing CEO Jonathan Siddharth told TechCrunch via email that he's received increased interest from customers in light of the rumors around Meta's deal with Scale AI. 'I think there will be some clients who will prefer to work with a partner that's more neutral,' he said. Only time will tell how Meta's investment will pan out for its AI efforts, but the company has significant ground to make up. Meanwhile, the competition isn't slowing down. OpenAI is gearing up for the release of its next flagship model, GPT-5, as well as its first openly available model in years — a model that'll compete with Meta's current and future Llama releases.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — The City of Thomasville is investigating after a potential breach of the city's cybersecurity, according to a city news release. On Wednesday, the city announced it is investigating a 'potential cybersecurity threat' involving 'its municipal systems.' Chinese hackers, user lapses turn smartphones into a 'mobile security crisis' The city identified 'suspicious activity within the city's digital infrastructure,' and took 'immediate action' to contain the situation. City IT is working with third-party cybersecurity experts to learn more and identify if sensitive information was accessed or compromised. If investigators discover that any personal information was affected, officials will contact the affected individuals directly and provide guidance and support. While the team investigates and works on strengthening security protocols, the city says that certain systems may be temporarily disrupted out of an abundance of caution. Public safety and other essential services will not be interrupted. 'We take the security of our systems and the privacy of our residents very seriously,' saidThomasville City Manager Michael Brandt in a statement.
