Restaurants, eateries at Tiruchi's Central Bus Stand see drop in business as Panjapur terminus becomes fully functional
The Central Bus Stand was busy until Tuesday with the operation of a number of government-owned and private sector buses. Hundreds of inbound and outbound domestic travellers used the bus stand as a transit point to go to their cities, towns. and villages.
According to sources, about 15 hotels function around the bus stand to cater to the needs of the transit passengers. Almost all of them are attached to restaurants. In addition to them, there are some food joints and roadside eateries to cater to the needs of all types of customers. Since the shifting of bus operation to the IBT, the Central Bus Stand wears a deserted look. Only the city buses are operated from it. The long-distance buses and the omni buses have been moved to the IBT.
It has had its impact in the business of hotels and restaurants. According to industry sources, the eateries and restaurants situated in the bus stand have reported a business drop of more than 50%. The restaurants situated in the immediate outer periphery of the bus stand reported more than 30% business drop. Anticipating poor patronage, owners of some eateries chose to shut them. Hotels and lodges report 5% to 10% drop in occupancy rate.
'We witnessed about 10% to 20% business drop since the shifting of bus operations to Panjapur. We face a sharp decline in business in the evening and night hours,' says manager of a popular restaurant at the Central Bus Stand.
However, hoteliers are of the view that they do not encounter immediate impact in the occupancy rate. They say that except for one of two lodges most of them are not depending upon the customers, who visit Tiruchi by bus. Many of these hotels are functioning for decades and they have a strong customer base.
'We are studying the impact. However, we do not foresee a significant drop in occupancy rate. If it comes down, it will be due to the absence of marriage season in the Tamil month of Aadi,' says S. Gopal, partner, Hotel Ajantha.
Echoing the same opinion, S.P. Annamalai, Managing Director of PLA Krishna Inn said that star class hotels close to the Central Bus Stand did not depend on bus travellers. The hotels had a long list of regular customers.
Mr. Gopal said there was no hotel at Panjapur at the moment. Hence, the bus travellers, who wanted to stay in Tiruchi, have to visit check in at the hotels around the Central Bus Stand.

Tamil actor absconding from trial in cheating case since 2018 arrested
NEW DELHI: The Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police has arrested Tamil film actor Srinivasan from Chennai, alias Powerstar, for allegedly duping a company of Rs 5 crore on the pretext of arranging a Rs 1,000 crore loan, officials said on Wednesday. In December 2010, the complainant company, Blue Coast Infrastructure Development Ltd., was approached by Henry Lalremsanga, Deepak Banga, Anil Varshney, and Ramanuja Muvvala, who presented themselves as consultants capable of arranging a loan of Rs 1,000 crore for hotel and corporate investment purposes. They assured that in case of failure, they would refund any amount paid upfront within 30 days. They introduced the complainant to S Srinivasan, who claimed to be the proprietor of Baba Trading Company and a long-time lender capable of arranging the Rs 1,000 crore loan. Under the agreement, the complainant paid Rs 5 crore first. However, neither the loan was arranged nor Rs 5 crore was returned, and the post-dated cheque given as a counter guarantee bounced due to insufficient balance. 'Rs 5 crore was transferred on December 27, 2010, to Srinivasan. He withdrew Rs 50 lakh in cash and transferred Rs 4.5 crore into a joint account. An FD of Rs 4 crore was made and seized,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW) Ravi Kumar said. Srinivasan was arrested and granted interim bail in 2013, with a commitment to repay Rs 10 crore in 15 days—of which he paid only Rs 3.5 lakh. He absconded and was declared a proclaimed offender (PO) in April 2016. He was again arrested in 2017 and granted bail, and once again he evaded trial.

Delhi Police arrests Tamil actor ‘Powerstar' over Rs 5-crore loan fraud
Fifteen years after Tamil actor and self-styled doctor S Srinivasan, popularly known as 'Powerstar', took Rs 5 crore from an infrastructure company on the pretext of securing it a Rs 1,000-crore loan, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police arrested him on July 27 in connection to the alleged fraud. Srinivasan was arrested from Vanagaram in Chennai – his third in the case, said police. Evading trial since 2018, he was declared a proclaimed offender (PO) twice for absconding while out on bail. Police said that Srinivasan, who was arrested from the Golden Treasure Apartment in Chennai, is now in judicial custody. Officers said that Srinivasan came to Chennai after completing a course in 'acupressure practice' from a China-based university through a distance education programme. 'His passion for films brought him to Chennai, where he set up a finance firm, Baba Trading Company, and advertised through brokers that he would help businessmen acquire bank loans,' Additional CP (EOW) Amrutha Gugloth said. Along with his business, Srinivasan took an interest in acting, and played supporting roles in small banner films like Unakkaga Oru Kavithai. He then launched himself as a lead actor in the film Neethana Avan, giving himself the sobriquet 'Powerstar' in the film credits, police said. The alleged fraud started when Blue Coast Infrastructure Development Limited, an infra company, started looking for investors to build hotels in Chennai. 'The company was approached by Henry Lalremsanga, Deepak Banga, Anil Varshney, and Ramanuja Muvvala, who presented themselves as experienced consultants capable of arranging a loan of Rs 1,000 crore for hotel and corporate investment purposes. They then introduced the company representatives to Srinivasan,' DCP (EOW) Ravi Kumar said. As a proprietor of Baba Trading company, Srinivasan claimed that he could quickly arrange for a loan of Rs 1,000 crore for the developers. He took a fee of Rs 5 crore for arranging adhesive stamps for the company, and also gave it a post dated check to cash in if he wasn't able to deliver the stamps within 30 days, police said. 'Investigation revealed that Rs 5 crore was transferred on December 27, 2010 to Baba Trading Company by the complainant's company, and then into accounts controlled by Srinivasan and his wife. He withdrew Rs 50 lakh in cash and transferred Rs 4.5 crore into a joint account. A fixed deposit of Rs 4 crore was later made,' the DCP said. Srinivasan was arrested in the case in 2013 after he failed to show any proof of his attempts to either secure a loan or to buy the stamps, police said. He got bail in September 2013, and fled twice before he was finally arrested on Sunday. 'He was first granted interim bail on September 27, 2013, with a commitment to repay Rs 10 crore within 15 days, of which he paid only Rs 3.5 lakh. He absconded and was declared a PO in April 2016. He was again arrested on March 7, 2017, granted bail on June 2, 2017. He again evaded trial, leading to him being again declared a PO on November 11, 2018,' the DCP said. Police said Srinivasan has six cases pertaining to financial fraud pending against him.
