I Bought an EV: 5 Expenses I Wasn't Prepared For

Buying an electric vehicle sounds like a smart move. No more gas costs, reduced maintenance and some tax credits. However, there are hidden expenses that can catch new EV owners by surprise.
GOBankingRates spoke to Marcus Griswold, founder of Calm Waters Group, who has been driving a Volkswagen ID.4 for two years now. He shared the expenses he wasn't prepared for after purchasing an EV. While he's still happy with his purchase, he has learned firsthand that going electric doesn't mean no expenses.

'The one that hit me was the tires,' Griswold said. 'Before I replaced my front tires, they were starting to flake chunks of rubber within 17,000 miles.'
This accelerated wear means EV owners need to replace tires more frequently, translating to hundreds of extra dollars in tire costs yearly.

You might think charging an electric car is cheaper than buying gas, but public charging costs can cost just as much and sometimes more, depending on where you are.
'In California, the cost to fill up a tank of gas is about the same cost I see to 'fill up' my battery,' Griswold noted.
While Griswold didn't install a home charger, it's worth noting that many EV owners do, and it's not cheap. Installation can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. However, some utility companies are developing programs that support reduced costs for EV charger installation.
'I was offered either three free years of charging or a charger installation discount from VW,' said Griswold.
EVs tend to be more expensive upfront, and insurance companies typically charge more premiums based on the vehicle value.
'Even though I received the rebate, my insurance and registration costs are higher,' Griswold said.
While most EV batteries are built to last eight or more years, replacing one outside warranty can cost thousands of dollars.
'Fortunately I have not had to change my battery, but that's also looming in the background,' said Griswold.
This burden affects many EV owners who find themselves constantly monitoring battery health and range, knowing that a major expense could be waiting down the road.

Tesla's capital advantage keeps the business safe for now. But eliminating EV tax credits could have a surprising effect on competition. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Billionaire Elon Musk is fighting to make sure federal tax incentives for electric vehicles (EVs) -- a key subsidy that makes buying EVs more affordable -- remain in place. President Donald Trump's new bill seeks to eliminate these tax incentives, which would otherwise be in place until 2032. Musk's company Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has already seen sales struggle to grow across many key geographies. Deliveries last quarter fell by 32% quarter over quarter, and by 13% year over year. Could the elimination of EV tax credits be a lethal blow to the struggling automaker? You might be surprised by the answer. When it comes to potential regulation "killing" an operating business like Tesla, the first thing investors must consider is the effect on sales growth. Already, demand growth has been stagnating for Tesla. And while the company has teased new potential revenue sources like its robotaxi venture, there aren't many high-visibility milestones ahead that will meaningfully boost revenue over the next year or two. Analysts expect the company to refresh its existing lineup, but details are scarce on releasing any brand new models in 2025 or 2026. Even if a new model is released, it's unlikely that production will scale meaningfully over the next 12 to 24 months. Where does this leave Tesla over the near term? In the same position it is in today, attempting to stoke demand for an increasingly stale lineup. Making the company's vehicles $4,000 to $7,500 more expensive -- the range of Federal incentives that Trump is proposing to eliminate -- could ultimately accelerate sales declines for Tesla. Any potential demand boost from releasing a more affordable Model Y or Model 3, meanwhile, could be completely offset by eliminated tax credits, resulting in minimal net savings for customers. In return, Tesla may need to compress its profit margins in order to keep demand growth on track. Fortunately, Tesla has the capital to withstand a multiyear stagnation in sales growth. It has $16 billion in cash and equivalents on the books, more than every other competitor. Its profit margins are also positive -- a rarity in the EV world -- meaning it can afford to cut profits a bit without going into the red. Though it should be mentioned that Tesla has also relied on selling automotive regulator credits -- earned by selling carbon-free vehicles -- to maintain profitability. The company earned $595 million last quarter by selling these credits versus a net income of $409 million. But most of this "free" income from selling credits comes from states like California and New York, as well as incentive programs in the E.U., making them unlikely to be cut should U.S. federal incentives change. Still, Tesla's biggest advantage is its $1 trillion market cap. Tesla could easily double the cash levels on its balance sheet while diluting shareholders by just 1% to 2%. This makes it very unlikely for the company to go under anytime soon. In fact, the elimination of EV tax credits could be a secret win for Tesla. Many investors might be surprised to learn that ExxonMobil wishes for a carbon tax to be implemented. A carbon tax would make its output more expensive to buyers, potentially limiting demand. But if production costs rise, it's possible that many small competitors can't compete, leaving more of the market for well-capitalized behemoths like Exxon. The same may prove true for Tesla. Most of its EV competition comes from unprofitable companies with minimal room for error like Rivian and Lucid Group. These EV makers are roughly 99% smaller than Tesla, with limited ability to tap the market for more capital at will. The elimination of EV tax credits would hurt them more than Tesla, potentially leaving more long-term market share for Musk and his investors. Of course, the immediate effect will be negative for Tesla and the rest of the industry. But it should be stressed that bills are not laws. The EV tax credit may end up in place until 2032 like previously planned. But the elimination of these subsidies certainly won't "kill" Tesla. Big EV 'myth' busted as Aussies rethink second-hand electric cars

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption grows in Australia, long-held myths around battery life, resale value, and long-term costs are being increasingly challenged by real-world data. But despite progress, some misconceptions — particularly around second-hand EVs — continue to influence buyer behaviour. One of the most persistent beliefs is that EVs don't hold their value as well as petrol-powered cars. While there's evidence that this is starting to shift, especially with improvements in battery technology, consumer hesitation remains. Scott Maynard, managing director of EV brand Polestar Australia, acknowledges that concerns around battery health have historically been a major sticking point. He says that's changing, particularly when buyers go through manufacturer-certified channels. "Purchasing a used EV through a certified manufacturer network now includes a detailed battery 'report card,' which helps build trust and gives buyers the confidence to go ahead with a second-hand electric vehicle," Maynard told Yahoo News Australia. Maynard has a vested interest in promoting the second-hand market. But many of his points are supported by independent data. Battery health software provider Geotab reports that the average annual degradation rate for EV batteries has dropped from 2.3 per cent in 2019 to 1.8 per cent in 2024 — a relatively modest figure compared to early concerns. Maynard also points to advances in battery management systems that help protect long-term performance by regulating temperature and usage patterns. He argues that this technology, along with the ability to repair individual battery modules rather than replacing entire packs, is helping shift buyer perceptions. However, public scepticism — often amplified by social media anecdotes — still plays a role in dampening confidence. And while some consumers are now embracing the used EV market as a more affordable entry point, challenges remain around financing, insurance, and rural infrastructure. Maynard believes these barriers can be addressed through stronger industry collaboration. "What the EV industry needs to do is engage the insurance sector on battery technology and repairability," he said, suggesting this could eventually result in more favourable premiums for consumers. When it comes to running costs, he also argues that EVs are proving cheaper to own and maintain than many Australians expect — especially for households with access to home charging and rooftop solar. Still, access to these cost-saving advantages isn't evenly distributed, particularly in regional areas. Range anxiety continues to be a major concern, and while Australia now has more than 1,800 high-power charging locations, infrastructure reliability and coverage remain key issues. Maynard says more test drives and exposure to EVs are crucial in breaking down remaining hesitations.
