Southern Tier resident seeks answers in Chautauqua County cold case
There are over 20 unsolved cases in Chautauqua County involving women who have gone missing or were murdered.
'There's a lot of work to be done, a lot of files to be read,' said Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone. 'It's slower than we would like it to be, but it is important for us to give the loved ones of these victims — offer them some hope, not giving them false hope, but let them know that they're not forgotten and that we're seeking justice.'
Southern Tier resident DJ Abram is making it his mission to figure out what happened in one of those cases that occurred almost 50 years ago. Abram helps run the Facebook page 'Who Killed Beth Ann Patterson Brown?' Brown was murdered in 1978 in Brocton, N.Y., after leaving a popular town bar.
Abram said the community deserves answers, not only for this cold case, but for the other cases in the county.
'There's somebody walking around who's responsible for this and it's heartbreaking for the families,' he said.
Police have not confirmed to WIVB News 4 if they're looking into whether accused killer Richard Fox has any connection to Brown's case. Abram said Fox did grow up in the area where Brown's murder happened.
Fox is accused of murdering two Buffalo women whose bodies were found in 2021 near the Chautauqua County Rails to Trails bike path. He's also a person of interest in a case in Niagara Falls, where police discovered human remains in a basement in the Falls.
'He was around 14, 15 at the time. Being that this happened in the middle of the night, being near a bar, I can't imagine a 14, 15-year-old would be hanging around a bar,' Abram said. 'It was a very brutal murder. Is it possible? It certainly is possible, but it doesn't seem likely in my mind.'
Last year, Congressman Nick Langworthy helped secure $100,000 in federal funding to help Chautauqua County crack these cold cases.
'I was honored to secure $100,000 for the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office as part of last year's appropriations process to support their Abducted, Missing, Murdered, and Unidentified Women's Initiative,' Langworthy said. 'This funding is about more than numbers — it's about justice, remembrance, and action. We owe it to the women who have vanished, to those whose lives were stolen, and to their families, to ensure their stories are not forgotten, their cases are fully investigated, and that every effort is made to deliver the answers and accountability they deserve. I salute Sheriff Quattrone for his vision in opening a cold case effort to bring just to these families and victims.'

Man denies falsely reporting Jaguar's brakes failed on M62
A man has denied falsely reporting that his Jaguar's brakes had failed before his car had to be boxed in by police on the M62. The ECHO previously reported that patrols from Merseyside Police's Matrix unit were called out in order to safely stop the vehicle on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway on the afternoon of March 6 last year, ultimately bring it to a halt between junction 11 for Birchwood, Warrington, and junction 12 at Eccles. Nathan Owen has since been charged with a string of alleged offences in connection with the incident. These include counts of dangerous driving on the M62, M57 and M58, as well as intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance. A second fraud matter alleges that he then made similarly fictitious reports to the S*n and Daily Mail in return for payment. The 32-year-old, of the Grove in Prestatyn, North Wales, appeared before Liverpool Magistrates' Court this morning, Wednesday, in order to face these charges. Appearing in the dock wearing a black zip-up top and glasses and sporting short dark hair and a beard, he spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth before pleading not guilty to all four counts. The panel of magistrates sent the case to the crown court due to the seriousness of the matters. Owen, who was represented by Elizabeth Manning, will now therefore appear before Liverpool Crown Court on September 10, being released on unconditional bail ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on this date. Former singer with The Platters missing for days in Brooklyn, daughter says
The daughter of an 80-year-old missing Brooklyn woman is asking for your help in the search. Sandra Hall, 80, is the former singer for the hit group The Platters. She was last seen Friday at around 4 p.m. near Atlantic Terminal. Kahtia DaSilva said Hall went missing after spending time at the Atlantic Terminal Mall. "We don't know where she's been sleeping, what she's been eating," DaSilva said. "I'm very concerned." DaSilva says Hall has dementia and was in the area with her caretaker, who's DaSilva's niece, at the time of her disappearance. DaSilva said Hall separated from her caretaker at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center subway station slipped through a turnstile, and got on an uptown 2 train. She hasn't been seen since. "She just hopped on, and by the time my niece, her caretaker, was able to get her bearings, the train had already gone," DaSilva said. Hall was wearing gray sweatpants, a pink shirt and white sneakers. "A lot of things are running through my mind right now. I am trying to stay hopeful and it be a positive scenario, such as maybe she's in the hospital, maybe she's in a homeless shelter," DaSilva said. DaSilva said Hall likes to be independent, but has never gone missing for several days. The family says they're worried for her safety, and hope someone may recognize here. "I just hope that if anyone sees her picture or if anyone just recognizes her, to be a good Samaritan and contact police," DaSilva said. "She's loved and we're very worried for her." ‘Lawless' e-bikers planned Florida street takeover but police were ready, cops say
Illegal street takeovers typically involve souped-up cars performing dangerous stunts in traffic, but one Florida city says it busted a 'lawless' street takeover by bikers. Not motorcyclists, mind you. Police say these were people on e-bikes, which are bicycles fitted with electric motors to make pedaling easier. The Port St. Lucie Police Department says social media posts revealed a 'planned e-bike street takeover' was set for the second weekend of August on SW Village Parkway. 'Officers with our Traffic Unit were prepared. They located the group of about 50 participants as they began to show up at the meet location, some from as far as Palm Beach and Tampa, including juveniles and adults,' police said in an Aug. 12 news release. 'Multiple participants were turned away and warned as they arrived with their e-dirt bikes on trailers. Our message is clear, lawless street takeovers will not be tolerated in Port St. Lucie!' Three people were arrested on charges including fleeing and eluding police, having no driver's license and operating an unregistered motorcycle, police said. Six criminal traffic citations were issued for operating unregistered motor vehicles on roadways and 15 citations were written up 'for various traffic violations.' Eight e-dirt bikes were seized and towed away on the back of a truck, police said. Maps show the intended location for the takeover at SW Village Parkway and SW Crosstown Parkway is an expansive intersection of four-lane roads with grass medians. The department's Aug. 12 Facebook post about the case had 2,700 reactions and comments within a day, some critical of police and others making fun of the suspects' sense of adventure. 'Lol, e-bike take over! This Harley Riding Girl has had her laugh for the whole year!' VL Lynn posted on the department's Facebook page. 'All get our golf carts and try it,' Bonnie Shaw Croteau wrote. 'Oh yes, people on electric bikes are such dangerous criminals,' Filius Mortis Shotts said. Port St. Lucie is about a 115-mile drive north from Miami.
