Irish rap star Malaki thrilled as lyrics featured on exterior of trendy new Dublin hotel
Irish rap star Malaki yesterday spoke of his thrill that a trendy new Dublin hotel has featured a bronze-cast lyric of one of his songs as an eye-catching attraction on the building's exterior.
The Dubliner from Stillorgan says he's particularly honoured to have been chosen by the quirky citizenM hotel, set opposite St Patrick's Cathedral in The Liberties, as the featured artist from a list that included Hozier and Dermot Kennedy.
'I'm still a struggling artist with a day job as a hospital porter, so they probably felt it would mean more to me than to artists who've had international success, which I'm very grateful for,' Malaki tells the Sunday World.
'I don't think it'll sink in until the official opening next week. For me and probably many other people, your city is who you are. And as a Dubliner it's very ingrained in who we are…proud to be here, but proud of the concrete and the grass on which we stand.
'I think as an artist to have something to remember you and your legacy is huge. We see it across the city with our Phil Lynotts and our James Joyces and Luke Kellys, and to me that just screams achievement - what they did for the art and not just for themselves.
'For me, in the beginning this journey was for Dublin, it was to spread a message to Dubliners because that's what Malaki means, it's messenger, and I just felt I did my job when I saw it.
The citizenM hotel in Dublin
'It felt like you did what you wanted to do you grieved in the city of Dublin, you wrote a song about your love of the city, and now it has come full circle, you've got what you wanted and you've come out the other end.'
Malaki's lyrics are from his song, Cuppa Tea. 'It's one that I've always loved playing live. The first time I played it everyone went crazy because it was upbeat, they could relate to it, it's fun, it has this great outro,' he says.
'So it seems it's always been meant to be that it's my most important song. And in this case it was chosen by the citizenM people, I didn't choose it.'
The citizenM hotel group has 36 hotels in 21 cities around the world and is the brainchild of Rattan Chadha, founder of global fashion brand, Mexx.
It's Dublin hotel is a Brutalist-style building design by legendary Irish architect Sam Stephenson, lovingly preserved and given a fresh new life by citizenM's creative team.
'They contacted me by direct message on Instagram three years ago,' Malaki reveals. 'And they said they chose Cuppa Tea because they wanted a representation of Dublin city. Even not coming from the city and not having any business here they felt that song was the best representation of it.
'And that was a massive compliment because that's exactly what I wrote the song about. It's about the love that's for Dublin, basically.
'I always wanted a billboard, but this is even better, this is forever.'
Malaki

'Was I photobombed by a Hollywood A-lister in Mayo? The evidence is compelling'
It could be said with some justification that anyone can look like Robert De Niro when they itch their eye. The very act of eye itching triggers De Niro's trademark slight head tilt to the side, and downturn of mouth, in all of us. We all have the potential to win Oscars and have our own NYC sushi restaurant - just by prodding a midge that might have entered our general eye socket area. READ MORE: Americans baffled by chicken fillet roll and county's flag READ MORE: Ryanair passenger sobs after being told she cannot board 'over hand luggage' I mention this because it's entirely probable I wasn't photobombed by Robert De Niro in Mayo a week ago. But it's also entirely possible I was. Some context: I was in Westport trying to partake in cafe culture which in Ireland means sitting at a wobbly table half on a town centre footpath, half on the road. To raise a family holiday atmosphere, photos were taken. I'm pictured putting my phone in my pocket having been told to stop Oldham Athletic scrolling. Here's a closeup of a man who at the very least looks a bit like Robert De Niro - either that or it's Robert De Niro Three days later, while scrolling photos of my trips to see Oldham Athletic, I had a closer look at the Mayo cafe photo and noticed... well... what did I notice? You can see here for yourself. Over my left shoulder is a man scratching his eye. But is it any man, or is it an 81 year old legend of the big screen? The man - pictured itching his eye which is something we've already discussed - looks undeniably like Robert De Niro, at the very least. He's wearing a casual jacket and grey shirt and understated sun glasses - a style combo much loved by the highly regarded star of Meet the Fockers. There's the trademark downturn of mouth. Could this really be Robert De Niro, walking past me unnoticed and unacknowledged, or is it some random Focker? This actually is Robert De Niro - not in Mayo but outside Donald Trump's trial in 2024 (Image: Fox News) There's many unanswered questions in this photo. If the man was confirmed at that moment to be Robert De Niro, would I have done anything differently? Would I have stopped him and asked him to replicate his "you talkin' to me" Taxi Driver mirror scene, to much mirth and hilarity? I bet he loves that. Would I ask why actors, who play pretend for a living, give their views on politics even though nobody asked? We could have had an interesting chat about that. Would I have asked him if he likes Ireland, and gurned clapping like a seal if he said yes, which is what Irish people do with foreign celebrities? And what other celebrities have walked past me in my lifetime, completely unnoticed? Is it possible that, when I was a child, Mr T was nearby just as I was losing another tooth to a Wham bar? The answer to that is yes. But the story my Mayo photo could tell remains unfully told. Unless Robert himself can offer clarification. There's all we don't know - but there may be more to follow. He's not the type to turn down an underwhelming sequel - surely. Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here

Foul-mouthed Irish parrot has incredible two-word response for anyone vaping
A foul-mouthed Irish parrot who hates e-cigarettes tells guests who are vaping to 'p*ss off'. Lucky Angel shouts 'no vaping' and swears at anyone he sees performing the habit. Owner Marie Mcaleavey first noticed the African Grey's hatred for e-cigarettes when she had an unsuspecting friend over. The bird's feathers stood on end and he flew around the room frantically when the guest pulled a vape out of her pocket. Marie, 51, was shocked when the eight-year-old bird yelled 'no vape' and told the visitor to 'p*ss off'. 'He hates vaping,' Marie, from Warrenpoint, Co Down, said. 'If a vape comes into the room I almost have to wash his mouth out. Parrots are very intelligent and very sensitive to smell. He hates anyone smoking vapes around him. 'A friend came over and I went into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. She'd gone to have some of her vape and he went ballistic, flying around the house and up the walls. 'He told her to p*ss off and said 'no vape, no vape'. His feathers were stood up like he was going to go mad at her. She thought he was an innocent little bird. It's unbelievable. He must have picked up the smell. He's very smart.' Retired interior designer Marie describes herself an 'anti-vaper'. She said: 'I've never even smoked in my house. 'Lucky Angel's reaction goes to show how dangerous vaping is. Whatever is coming out of the vape must be really bad. I took a photo of a lung damaged by vaping and he wasn't impressed at all. He nearly tore it down and yelled 'no vape'.' Marie bought Lucky Angel in 2016 'on a whim' after spotting an advert for him online. She added: 'I wanted an animal that lives longer than a cat or dog and thought it would be fun to hear him talking. He's so clever and picks up on everything, especially four letter words which are naughty. He's so witty. 'It's fascinating how intelligent they are and you have to keep them stimulated. He likes walnuts, 80 percent dark chocolate and watching NCIS. Lucky Angel has a whole room to himself and I spray him in coconut oil to make his feathers glisten.'
