France school stabbing: Teen suspect said he planned to kill ‘any monitor' after reprimand over kiss

Malay Mail12-06-2025
PARIS, June 12 —A 14-year-old French school pupil detained for stabbing to death a teaching assistant had wanted to attack 'any' adult monitor after being reprimanded for kissing his girlfriend, a prosecutor said yesterday.
French authorities have announced plans to ban social media for under-15s and the sale of knives to minors after the teenager was arrested for the murder of the 31-year-old school monitor on Tuesday in the eastern town of Nogent.
The killing of the monitor—named only as Melanie—caused widespread shock, just months after another student killed a girl and wounded several others in a stabbing in western France.
The Nogent school pupil acknowledged 'being the perpetrator' of the latest deadly stabbing, regional prosecutor Denis Devallois told reporters.
The teenager did not appear to suffer from any 'mental disorder', but appeared 'detached' and expressed 'no regret' for killing one of the school's monitors, all of whom were women, Devallois said.
He said the suspect said he was a fan of 'violent video games', and showed a 'fascination for violence and death'.
The suspect 'said there was perhaps a link with the fact he was told off by a monitor on Friday, June 6, as he was kissing his girlfriend on school grounds', the prosecutor said, adding she was not the one killed on Tuesday.
'He stated that he had, as early as the next day, Saturday, mulled over a plan to kill a monitor, in his own words, 'any one of them',' the prosecutor added.
'He said that on Tuesday morning after breakfast he grabbed the largest knife in his home to, in his words, 'cause the most damage''.

'She was great with kids'
Friends and well-wishers earlier on Wednesday left flowers and messages of support in front of the secondary school.
Laurence Raclot, who knew the victim, said she was 'stunned'.
'She was great with kids,' Raclot said of the teaching assistant.
A former hairdresser, Melanie had retrained and worked at the school since September. She was the mother of a four-year-old boy and a councillor in a village near Nogent.
In the wake of the attack, authorities promised measures to tackle knife crime among children.
'I am proposing banning social media for children under 15,' President Emmanuel Macron said on X on Tuesday evening.
'Platforms have the ability to verify age. Let's do it.'
Greece has spearheaded a proposal backed by France and Spain for the European Union to limit children's use of online platforms, as evidence shows that social media can have negative effects on children's mental and physical health.
Macron said on Tuesday that France 'cannot wait' and that if no progress was made in the coming months, the country would go ahead with the ban unilaterally.
France has seen several attacks on teachers and pupils in recent years by other schoolchildren.
In March, police started random searches for concealed weapons in and around schools.
Metal detectors?
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's office said a decree would be issued within the next two weeks to ban the sale of knives to minors.
Bayrou has also called for a trial of metal detectors in schools.
Education Minister Elisabeth Borne has also called for children's screen time to be limited.
But trade unions said they were not sure how the government's latest proposals could be enforced.
Sophie Venetitay, general-secretary of the SNES-FSU teachers' union, criticised what she saw as attempts to turn teaching assistants 'into security guards'.
Remy Reynaud, of the CGT Educ'action union, said bag searches outside schools simply 'increase tensions'.
Borne has called for a minute's silence in all French schools at midday on Thursday to honour the teaching assistant.
Borne on Sunday said French secondary schools could now screen British Netflix drama 'Adolescence', which explores how boys can be exposed to misogynistic influences online. — AFP

French streamer Jean Pormanove dies during live event, autopsy ordered after scenes of ‘absolute horror'

NICE, Aug 21 — French police are hoping an autopsy will help shed light on a 46-year-old man's death during a live-streamed event that a government minister said involved scenes of 'absolute horror', a prosecutor said yesterday. Raphael Graven, known online as 'Jean Pormanove' or 'JP', died on Monday during the event, with internet users saying the footage showed him lying under a sheet while another man threw a plastic bottle at him. Graven had built a following of hundreds of thousands on streaming platform Kick by putting on live shows in which he was abused or humiliated. Police had been questioning witnesses and seizing evidence, including videos, prosecutor Damien Martinelli said in a statement. 'Several interviews with people present at the time of his death have been conducted without yielding leads as to its causes,' Martinelli said, adding that the autopsy would be carried out on Thursday. Prosecutors said he died Monday in the village of Contes near the southern city of Nice. 'The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he suffered are an absolute horror,' said Clara Chappaz, French junior minister for digital matters. Internet users said the video, which was widely shared afterwards, showed Graven lying motionless under a bed cover. One of two men in the room with him, known by pseudonyms NarutoVie and Safine, threw a plastic water bottle in his direction. NarutoVie and Safine had already been questioned by police in a separate inquiry in January over claims they were mistreating vulnerable people in online events to generate payments from viewers. Graven was interviewed as a potential victim at the time but denied having suffered any violence, Martinelli said. Instead, Graven and another potential victim told police the events 'were staged and aimed at creating a buzz and earning money', he said. Graven said he made 'sums of 6,000 euros' generated by his company thanks to contracts with streaming platforms. 'Both said they were never injured, were free to come and go, and to make their own decisions,' the prosecutor said. They also declined a medical and psychiatric examination. Australian platform Kick said Wednesday all co-streamers involved in the event had been banned from the platform pending the outcome of the investigation. It said it was also running a 'complete re-evaluation' of its French content. The platform is seen as having less stringent user terms than those of its rival, the better-known Twitch streaming service. — AFP

‘None of this will bring me down': Spurs' Tel hits back at racist abuse

LONDON, Aug 20 — Tottenham Hotspur forward Mathys Tel said he would not allow the racial abuse directed at him online following his side's Uefa Super Cup defeat by Paris St-Germain bring him down. Spurs said they were 'disgusted' by the abuse aimed at the 20-year-old Frenchman, who missed a spot-kick during their penalty shootout defeat by PSG in Italy last Wednesday. 'I was also disappointed about Wednesday night but racism has no place in our society,' Tel posted on social media on Tuesday. 'I know where I come from, where I started and none of this will bring me down. With work and humility, respect reigns.' Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo was also subjected to racist abuse during his side's 4-2 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield on Friday. A 47-year-old man from Liverpool, who was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Semenyo, has been conditionally bailed and banned from attending soccer matches. — Reuters

Six teens nabbed as Form Three boy assaulted, stripped and nearly strangled in Pasir Mas school attack

PASIR MAS, Aug 20 — A Form Three boy was reportedly injured after he was allegedly assaulted, stripped of his trousers and almost strangled with wire by several students at a school here yesterday. Berita Harian (BH) reported Pasir Mas police chief ACP Kama Azural Mohamed confirming the incident when contacted, with six 16-year-old teenagers arrested and set for remand today. He also said that a statement on the incident will be issued later today. The incident reportedly happened at about 10am before a teacher passing by came across it. Previously, the victim's aunt alleged in a Facebook post that her nephew had been slapped, punched and had his trousers pulled down. She claimed her nephew was nearly strangled with wire before the attack was stopped by the teacher. 'My nephew was kicked, punched, beaten, slapped, and had his trousers pulled down to his knees. His neck was nearly strangled with wire. 'If the teacher hadn't been there, my nephew might have died at the hands of the bullies,' she posted as quoted by BH, She also alleged that six families had requested for the family to drop the case. 'I beg the bullies' families not to pressure my sibling into withdrawing this case,' she added. 'These bullies are only in Form Four, yet they are already capable of such actions. What will happen when they turn 20?' This comes as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today that the Cabinet will deliberate on the proposal for a tribunal to handle bullying cases involving children. Fatal bullying of children has come into public spotlight recently following the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) trainee cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin. The family of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman who was found dead in Kok Lanas, Kelantan in 2013 has also called for the case to be reopened. Five teenage girls are scheduled to be charged in the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu this morning in connection with the bullying case of student Zara Qairina.
