Nigeria's senate president denies sexually harassing colleague
One of Nigeria's most senior politicians, Godswill Akpabio, has denied allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by a fellow senator.
Senate President Akpabio told Wednesday's session that he had been raised very well by his late mother and had never harassed any woman.
In an interview with Arise Television on Friday, senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio had made inappropriate advances towards her during a visit to his residence in southern Akwa Ibom state, on 8 December 2023.
She said that Akpabio had taken her by the hand, led her around his house, and made sexual advances towards her while her husband walked behind them, talking on his phone.
She further alleged that Akpabio had, on a separate occasion, insinuated that she should "take care of him" if she wanted her motions to receive favourable consideration in the senate.
The senator alleged that he was behaving like a university lecturer who consistently failed his student who had refused to sleep with him.
But this was denied by Akpabio.
"At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria," he noted.
The issue has generated huge debate in Nigeria with many calling for an independent investigation.
In a social media post, Akpabio's predecessor, and political rival, Bukola Saraki said the issues raised were too serious to be simply brushed aside.
Earlier on Wednesday, two groups of protesters gathered at the assembly ground in the capital, Abuja - one backing Akpabio and the other in support of his colleague, chanting ''Akpabio must go.''
Senator Uduaghan used Wednesday's plenary session to submit a formal petition calling for an investigation into Akpabio's behaviour.
As the president, Akpabio permitted Uduaghan to proceed, directing that her petition be referred to the senate committee on the code of conduct, ethics, and public petitions.
Before becoming senate president less than two years ago, Akpabio was governor of the oil-rich Akwa Ibom state for eight years and also minister of Niger Delta affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

UN agencies say a violence-hit part of South Sudan is on the brink of famine
JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — Three United Nations agencies warned on Thursday of looming famine in a conflict-stricken part of South Sudan. People in 11 of 13 counties in South Sudan's Upper Nile state now face emergency levels of hunger, the World Food Program, the U.N. Children's Fund and the Food and Agriculture Organization said in a joint statement. Upper Nile is the scene of fighting between government troops and armed militias that oppose the government of President Salva Kiir. The fighting has escalated in recent months, 'destroying homes, disrupting livelihoods and impeding the delivery of humanitarian aid,' the statement said. Some 32,000 people are in hunger conditions categorized as 'catastrophic,' more than three times the previous projection, it said. Although some other parts of South Sudan are seeing improvements in food security, some 57% of the east African country's 11.5 million people face acute food insecurity. Famine was declared in parts of South Sudan in 2017. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the leading international system to designate hunger crises , considers an area to be in famine when three things occur: 20% of households have an extreme lack of food, or essentially are starving; at least 30% of children suffer from acute malnutrition or wasting, meaning they're too thin for their height; and two adults or four children per every 10,000 people are dying daily of hunger and its complications. The IPC unites experts from more than 20 organizations, including U.N. agencies, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, the European Union, and the World Bank. Nasir, one of the counties facing a famine warning, is a stronghold for anti-government militias and the scene of fighting that has left mounting civilian casualties . 'Once again, we are seeing the devastating impact conflict has on food security in South Sudan,' Mary-Ellen McGroarty, the World Food Program representative in South Sudan, said in the statement by the U.N. agencies. 'Conflict doesn't just destroy homes and livelihoods, it tears communities apart, cuts off access to markets and sends food prices spiraling upward. Dems struggle with economy messaging, poll finds
Democrats are missing an opportunity to take advantage of President Donald Trump's weaknesses on the economy, according to the center-left think tank Third Way. A new memo from the group argues that Democrats need to lean into the fight over fiscal responsibility by painting Republicans as irresponsible on the economy and the national debt. Third Way commissioned a poll across five 2026 Senate battlegrounds, finding that only 39% of voters there rate Trump's job on the economy as excellent or good; majorities don't view maintaining tariffs as fiscally responsible; and many are broadly concerned about possible recession. Even so, it showed that voters trust Republicans more to handle tax and fiscal policy. 'Democrats can drive public sentiment with a simple message: The Trump plan will bankrupt us,' the memo advises, noting that Democrats have a 'serious brand problem on spending.'

EXCLUSIVE: A group of DOGE-minded lawmakers is rolling out a series of budget proposals to add to the Senate version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act narrowly passed by the House. The effort, led by Senate DOGE Caucus Chairwoman Joni Ernst, will include several major proposals forged by Republicans from both chambers, seeking to help offset trillions in extant government spending. While a $9.4 billion rescissions package, a formal request from the executive branch to codify its DOGE cuts, is in the works, proponents of the Senate DOGE package say their total estimated savings would accentuate that and also surpass it in value. Other pieces of the Senate's DOGE package include ending what proponents call "unemployment for millionaires," disqualifying people earning more than $1 million per year who lose their jobs from any unemployment support. More than $271 million had been disbursed to that bloc between 2021-2023, proponents said. Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., a former chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, is leading the Protecting Taxpayers' Wallet Act in the lower chamber. The bill's language, which ends taxpayer-funded union time when government workers negotiate their contracts while on the clock, will be included in the Senate DOGE package. Another portion will compel the sale of six unused or underutilized federal buildings in Washington, D.C., that lawmakers say would free up $400 million in savings annually. The final portion will "snap back inaccurate SNAP payments," Ernst said. The effort will work to identify errors, force collection of overpayments to SNAP recipients and hold states with high levels of their own payment inaccuracies accountable for their negligence. In 2023, approximately $11 billion in SNAP funds were overpaid, but the package's authors noted individual errors of $54 or less aren't included in the tally. Democrats have been critical of DOGE efforts and the separate rescissions package. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., told Fox News Thursday a successful version of the latter hasn't passed since the first Bush administration. "Congress' role in setting spending would be done away with, so this first rescission should be defeated," he said.
