Ahmedabad plane crash: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan to chair high-level meet tomorrow on civil aviation security
New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): A high-level committee on civil aviation security, headed by the Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, is scheduled to meet tomorrow afternoon. The meeting is being convened in connection with the recent Ahmedabad plane crash, sources said.
The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed and rammed into a doctor's hostel shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12.
The crash claimed 241 lives out of the 242 people onboard, which included 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The lone survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries. At least 33 people, including local residents on the ground and MBBS students, have also died till today as the plane rammed into the doctor's hostel after the crash.
Earlier on Sunday, Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said that the DNA of 45 deceased have been matched with their relatives, and confirmed that the death toll in the Ahmedabad plane crash stands at 274.
'Till now, 45 DNA samples have matched. Around 274 people have lost their lives in the heart-wrenching incident,' state's Health Minister said.
He also said that the funeral of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among the victims, will be held tomorrow with full state honours.
Patel stated, 'CM Bhupendra Patel informed Vijay Rupani's family about the DNA samples matching as soon as the information was received... Tomorrow, at 11.30 am, the family will receive Vijay Rupani's mortal remains from the Civil Hospital. The mortal remains will be taken to Rajkot by air and reach there at 2. The funeral will be carried out at 5 pm and the last rites will be completed at 6 pm with state honours.'
The state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working to match more DNA samples.
According to Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), HP Sanghavi, DNA examination is critically needed to identify the victims of the tragic crash, citing that the extreme heat from the blaze that erupted after the crash had made the traditional method of identification ineffective. 'Central intelligence agencies received information that Brar and Godara did not help Anmol file the required bail bond. Anmol was later released but with an ankle bracelet tracker,' sources said. Anmol (25) was arrested by US immigration authorities in November 2024 for allegedly travelling with fake documents. He was allegedly involved in Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala's killing in May 2022, and was the 'mastermind' in the murder of NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique last year. According to sources, state police officers found that over the past few months, Noni Rana (Surya Pratap), the younger brother of Kala Rana (Virender Pratap), who is a known gangster from Haryana's Yamunanagar, has been making calls from the US and collecting money on behalf of Bishnoi. 'Nowadays, gangsters do not make extortion calls directly from the US but use VPN services linked to other countries,' they said. Referring to Brar and Godara, the sources said, 'Last month, they took responsibility in a social media post for the killing of Harjit Singh, a businessman operating a trucking safety and insurance consultancy, outside his office in Canada's Mississauga… they did not mention the name of Lawrence and other gang members, which they usually do in such posts.' Apart from the killings of Moosewala and Siddique, Bishnoi's name has cropped up over the past three years in connection with multiple threats issued to Salman Khan, including the firing outside the actor's house. Meanwhile, Canada has alleged that 'agents' of the Indian government were collaborating with the Bishnoi gang to spread terror on Canadian soil — a charge that India has denied. Brar (Satwinderjit Singh), the alleged mastermind behind the murder of Moosewala, was declared a designated terrorist by the Centre under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 2024. During his initial days in the world of crime, Lawrence had formed a team with Brar, Kala Rana and others. 'Bishnoi later made a 'business model' involving alliances with gangsters from UP (Dhanajay Singh), Punjab (Jaggu Bhagwanpuria), Haryana (Kala Jatheri), Rajasthan (Rohit Godara) and Delhi (Rohit Moi and Hashim Baba),' sources said. 'Things were working smoothly between them, but then it all started changing. First, there were ego clashes with Bhagwanpuria, who was supplying weapons to them and asking for more money. After some time, Kala Jatheri also separated after he found that Godara and Brar were making extortion calls to several people in Haryana, his stronghold,' sources said.

Bengal man in Thane pushed into Bangladesh even as family, govt submit proof of his citizenship
A 36-year-old man from West Bengal, who had gone to Maharashtra for work, was picked up by Maharashtra Police, suspecting him to be an illegal Bangladesh migrant, and was pushed across the border into the neighbouring country by the Border Security Force (BSF) in the wee hours of Saturday. The Maharashtra Police and the BSF, according to the West Bengal government, pushed Mehbub Sheikh into Bangladesh despite intervention from the West Bengal Police, state Migrant Welfare Board and submission of necessary documents to prove his Indian citizenship. 'After Sheikh's family approached us, we contacted the Maharashtra Police. All the (required) documents were sent to them. They didn't even bother to inform the West Bengal government, and Sheikh was pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF,' Samirul Islam, chairman of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board, told The Indian Express. Sheikh's family said they are residents of Hossainnagar village in Mahisasthali gram panchayat area of Bhagabangola in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The 36-year-old worked as a mason in Maharashtra. 'For the past two years, he has been working in Maharashtra. He used to stay in the Mira Road area of Thane near Mumbai. Five days ago (Wednesday, June 11), while he was having tea, police picked him up, suspecting him to be a Bangladeshi, and took him to Kanakia police station,' Sheikh's younger brother Mujibur told The Indian Express over the phone from Murshidabad. 'He called us from Kanakia police station. We immediately informed the local police and administration, as well as our panchayat pradhan and the migrant welfare board. They said they were in touch with the Maharashtra Police. By Friday, we sent all documents to Maharashtra Police, including Mehbub Sheikh's voter card, Aadhaar Card, ration card, and even our family tree, running generations certified by the panchayat,' said Mujibur. Shabbir Ahmed, pradhan of Mahisasthali gram panchayat, said that they rushed to Siliguri after coming to know that Mehbub Sheikh had been sent to a BSF camp there. 'On Friday (June 13), we were informed by the local police station that Maharashtra Police alerted them that Mehbub has been sent to a BSF camp in Siliguri. My brother Mujibur rushed to the camp. But we were not entertained there. They did not even listen to us,' the pradhan said. According to the family, Mehbub Sheikh called them on Saturday (June 14), informing them that BSF pushed him into Bangladesh at 3.30 am. 'He said that he was pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF around 3.30 am on Saturday. He took shelter in a village from where he made the call. He was crying. He has a wife and three children. We just want him back. We don't know how long he can survive in Bangladesh,' said Mujibur. The Maharashtra Police defended their action, saying Mehbub 'failed' to give documents to prove his nationality, adding that they don't consider Aadhaar and PAN cards for proving citizenship. 'We are not at fault… On the police commissioner's order to take action against illegal Bangladeshi migrants, we detained many suspects, including Mehbub Sheikh, on June 11. We demanded documents from them that could prove their nationality. Generally, we don't consider Aadhaar and PAN cards for this purpose, as they can be fraudulently obtained. Hence, we asked him to produce his birth certificate or any strong proof. Plane crash: DNA tests identify 80 victims including ex-CM Rupani; 33 bodies handed over to kin

Authorities have handed over 33 bodies to the victims' families, officials said on Sunday. Ahmedabad, Jun 15 (PTI) Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed 270 lives, hospital authorities confirmed on Sunday the identification of 80 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The Gujarat government has announced a state mourning for Rupani on Monday. His funeral procession will be held in Rajkot in the evening. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college complex moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 PM on Thursday. So far 29 people are reported to have died in the disaster on the ground which includes five MBBS students. Only one person from the aircraft miraculously survived. 'A total of 80 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 33 victims have been handed over to their respective families,' Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters. The victims whose mortal remains were handed over were from Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Kheda, Botad and other places. Of the 51 people injured in the incident, 38 have been discharged, while 13 are still undergoing treatment, said Dr. Patel, a professor of surgery at the government-run B J Medical College. According to Dr. Dhaval Gameti, president of the BJ Medical College Junior Doctors' Association, around 270 bodies were brought to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital from the crash site. State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey told reporters that families of all 230 passengers who perished on the flight have been contacted. 'Members of only three deceased passengers are yet to give their DNA samples as they live abroad. They are expected to arrive tomorrow evening. Along with the mortal remains, we are also handing over death certificates to the kin so that they don't face any issues afterwards,' said Pandey. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading a thorough probe into the causes of the crash. Various Central and state government agencies, including the state police, are assisting the AAIB team at the crash site in Meghaninagar. Sources said the first meeting of a high-level multi-disciplinary committee formed by the Centre will be held on Monday in New Delhi. The committee, headed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, is mandated to ascertain the 'root cause' of the plane crash and assess any contributing factors, including mechanical failure, human error, and regulatory compliances. The committee has been mandated to submit its report within three months. As part of the ongoing efforts, 230 teams have been formed to coordinate with the victims' families. Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site and Civil Hospital on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured. State government officials apprised Mishra about the sequence of events leading to the disaster, which is the country's worst aviation accident in decades. After enquiring about the health of the injured, Mishra proceeded to the hospital's morgue area. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad.
