Air India Ahmedabad plane crash LIVE news: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday to visit the site of the Air India plane crash that killed 241 people the day before. It is being described as one of the worst air disasters in recent years. Officials said the Prime Minister landed at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport and went straight to the crash site in the Meghaninagar area.
The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was heading to London when it crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The aircraft struck a part of BJ Medical College and burst into flames.
Medical students among the victims
According to the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), at least five MBBS students, one postgraduate doctor, and the wife of a senior specialist from BJ Medical College were killed. Over 60 medical students were also injured in the crash.
FAIMA's national vice president, Dr Divyansh Singh, said the search and rescue operation was still underway. 'Bodies that have been found were totally charred,' he said. Many people are feared to be buried under the debris.

Air India confirmed that 241 people on board the London-bound flight were killed. The aircraft was carrying 242 people in total, including passengers and crew. The victims included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian.
Air India also stated that the only survivor is a British national of Indian origin. The crash, which happened moments after take-off, is one of the deadliest in India's aviation history.

Bodies of six Air India crash victims handed over to relatives, say police
At least 265 bodies were sent to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for post-mortem after the crash on Thursday. Of these, only six victims were identified as their faces were intact, inspector Chirag Gosai said. "We have handed over six bodies to relatives. We have started the process of collecting DNA samples of relatives for profiling to identify bodies that are charred beyond recognition. Relatives of 215 deceased persons have approached us to give their samples," said Gosai.

Panel set up to fix 'root cause' of crash
New Delhi/Ahmedabad: The Centre on Saturday set up a high-level multi-disciplinary panel to ascertain the "root cause" of the crash of the London-bound Air India plane in Ahmedabad and assess any contributing factors, including mechanical failure, human error and regulatory compliances even as the death toll in the disaster rose to 270. As the panel headed by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan was mandated to give its report in three months, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said aviation regulator DGCA has ordered "extended surveillance" for the Tata-owned airline's Boeing 787 Dreamliner series planes. The carrier now has 26 Boeing 787-8s and seven Boeing 787-9s in its fleet. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 787-8(AI171) and another 29 persons including five MBBS students on the ground were killed when the aircraft came down on Thursday moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport before plummeting inside the nearby campus of the state-run BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar area and going up in flames. As investigators pore over wreckage at the BJ Medical College hostel and canteen complex for clues after the crash, Air India officials said the ill-fated airplane underwent comprehensive maintenance checks in June 2023 and was due for the next scheduled comprehensive checks in December this year.

"Declining groundwater levels, shrinking water bodies and increasing dependence on over-extraction are pushing the state towards a serious water crisis. Even major rivers like the Rapti and Ganga, once considered perennial sources, are no longer dependable throughout the year," he said while speaking at 'Bhujal Suraksha, Bhavishya ki Raksha', organised jointly by Navbharat Times and UP groundwater department on Friday. Singh said while rivers like Chambal bring up to 20 lakh cusecs of water the Rapti barely carries 3,400 cusecs now. "In districts like Varanasi, we sometimes struggle to supply drinking water from the Ganga during the dry season," he added. The minister lamented that thousands of ponds and lakes, once the backbone of rural water conservation, have either been encroached upon or turned into drains. "Earlier, every village had a pond where animals and people bathed. Today, many of those ponds have been filled up or polluted beyond use," he said, urging the revival of these water bodies. He stressed the need to reduce everyday water wastage, especially of bottled water in weddings and public events. "If every person saves even a single bottle daily, the collective impact would be huge," he said, encouraging the use of refillable water bottles during travel. The govt, Singh said, is actively working on water budgeting and security plans and has launched projects in nearly 70% of the state's development blocks. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, groundwater is being tapped for household supply, but he warned this will not be sustainable without proper recharge and conservation. Technologies like drip irrigation, remote sensing and rainwater harvesting are being promoted, Singh said adding that public participation was the key.
