Fans have days to binge 'addictive' historic drama before the new season
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Period drama lovers have just days to race through this underrated Apple TV Plus show, The Buccaneers, ahead of the second season. The eight-episode first season is based on classic novelist Edith Wharton's unfinished novel and offers a modern take on the lives of a group of New York debutantes sent to London to find husbands. Set during the Gilded Age, we meet Conchita (Alisha Boe), Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag), Mabel (Josie Totah), Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) and Nan (Kristine Froseth, lifelong friends about to encounter plenty of heartbreak, love and scandal. Originally released in 2023, the synopsis reads: 'A group of fun-loving American girls burst onto the scene in tightly corseted 1870s London kicking off an Anglo-American cultural clash. 'Sent to secure husbands and status, the buccaneers' hearts are set on much more than that.' The show comes across as a fusion of Julian Fellowes' Gilded Age and Netflix's Bridgerton – fusing the more serious themes of the period aesthetic with the current trend of forward-looking historic dramas, dubbed by some as 'anachronistic'. Although it gets off to a rocky start for some viewers, it has won countless fans over by the end with its refreshing ensemble cast. The first season landed an impressive 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. 'Very easy and enjoyable to watch, pure escapism, loveable characters, beautiful scenery and costumes, great soundtrack,' user Kate C wrote. 'I love everything about this show. Truly magical. A must watch for sure!' Freya C added. 'Love this version of Edith Wharton… it works brilliantly on so many levels.. roll on season 2,' L S shared. 'It's intelligent, well-acted, funny, uplifting and addictive!' Patrick G said. 'It had absolutely everything and more you would want in a period drama. It also covered a lot of interesting topics such as women having to be silent, abuse, loveless marriages, and unfaithfulness. Our main group of women prove themselves a powerful ensemble cast with vivacious personalities. Far from my initial impression of a shallow drama with trite love triangles, predictable affairs and stereotypical aristocracy, this only scratches the surface. Don't get me wrong, for people who love those soap operatic style storylines, there is still plenty to sink your teeth into, but the show also goes much deeper than that – as proven by season two. 'It started with annoying Americans laughing and being silly, but managed to transform into each character having a really important story,' Jemma CC said on Google Reviews. Nisha Bhatt echoed: 'I can't say enjoyed the premise or the first episode too much but the character development is truly the best part of this show. Unlike several other shows, the side characters have some the best storytelling and leave you wanting to watch the show again.' More Trending 'Everyone needs to watch The Buccaneers is so cute and addictive,' @anyasunrise wrote over on X. The show may not be to everyone's taste, however, so proceed with caution. Some have called it out for 'poor writing', the lack of 'historical accuracy' and 'ridiculous storylines', with some unhappy with how the main character, Nan, is characterised. The second season will introduce Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester and pick up right from where the show left off after that dramatic season one cliffhanger. Popular Ted Lasso character admits they don't know if they'll be in new series
Ted Lasso was confirmed to be returning for a fourth season in March this year, but will Strictly Come Dancing star Ellie Taylor be reprising her role of Sassy alongside Jason Sudeikis? Actress and comedian Ellie Taylor has revealed whether or not she will be returning for the new series of Ted Lasso. The Strictly Come Dancing star appeared alongside Jason Sudeikis in all three seasons of the popular Apple TV series. Ted Lasso wrapped things up, seemingly for good, in May 2023, but it was announced in March that the Emmy award-winning series will be returning for a fourth series, with executive producer Jason set to reprise his titular role of the American AFC Richmond coach. Announcing the surprise series, Jason, 49, said: "As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to 'look before we leap', in season four the folks at AFC Richmond learn to leap before they look, discovering that wherever they land, it's exactly where they're meant to be." Among the other stars of Ted Lasso are comedian Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, Phil Dunster and Game Of Thrones star Hannah Waddingham. Ellie - who is working with Intrepid Travel to campaign for more female-fronted travel shows - played the supporting role of Flo 'Sassy' Collins, best friend of Hannah's character Rebecca Welton. Hannah has revealed she is reprising her role as the owner of AFC Richmond when the fourth series begins shooting in July, but will Sassy be by Rebecca's side once again? Ellie isn't sure. "Oh, I have no idea," Ellie admitted earlier this week when asked if she was returning to the hit Apple TV series. "I mean, I know as much as you do about Ted Lasso. I'm delighted that it's coming back and I'll be avidly watching for sure." "I can't imagine anyone who was involved with the original series would not want to go back," Ellie mused when quizzed on if she wants to play Sassy one more time. "It was a joy to be a part of. I feel really lucky to have been part of such a show that is so well regarded and mean so much to so many people." Ellie may not be filming (yet) but she's keeping busy with a mammoth task - trying to shake up the male, pale and stale world of travel TV. The comedian has teamed up with Intrepid Travel to back a campaign for more women fronting travel shows. According to Intrepid Travel, less than a quarter (23%) of travel programmes commissioned last year were hosted solely by female presenters, despite almost half of women wanting to have some representation on screen to highlight the unique issues female travellers can experience. "I've spent my career challenging outdated attitudes, and travel TV is long overdue for a shake-up. It's wild that last year in 2024 only 23% of travel shows were hosted by women, despite the fact that so many women are passionate about travel, exploration, and storytelling. Intrepid found 48% of people consider travel to be a male-dominated industry, but it shouldn't be!" Ellie said of her new gig. "I'm thrilled to be partnering with Intrepid Travel to shine a light on this issue – and to do it in a way that makes people laugh while still making a serious point. We're not just calling out the disparity, we're also starting a conversation about what needs to change, and hopefully, inspiring networks to rethink who they put in the spotlight." In a bid to inspire commissioners to cater to the real interests of audiences, Intrepid Travel has teamed up with TV producer Nicola Hebden (known for Travel Man and Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father) to devise a proposal for an innovative new travel series - Travel Ann. The programme will follow Ellie as she encounters remarkable women across the globe who have committed their lives to effecting significant change in their local communities. These are women who are pushing boundaries and redefining leadership within the realms of travel and conservation. In one suggested episode, Ellie spends time with The Black Mambas – the world's first and only all-female, unarmed anti-poaching unit – who are safeguarding endangered wildlife and inspiring a new wave of female conservationists. Travel Ann is in the process of being pitched to major UK TV networks for a 6 episode run. Further information on the TV series can be found here.

Beaming Sophie Turner flashes her abs in low-rise trousers as she lands in NYC after showing support for her ex-husband Joe Jonas
Sophie Turner was all smiles while arriving at JFK Airport in New York City on Saturday. The Joan star, 29, flashed her toned midriff as she opted for a casual look including grey low-rise trousers. The English actress completed the casual but stylish outfit with a bomber jacket and Adidas trainers. Sophie carried the essentials in a large black tote bag and shielded behind a pair of shades for her arrival in the US. Her sighting comes after the GOT favourite recently hinted at where she stands with her ex-husband Joe Jonas, less than two years after their contentious separation. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The couple had a Las Vegas wedding in 2019 and welcomed two daughters, Willa, four, and Delphine, two, over the course of their marriage. In September 2023 Joe filed for divorce, plunging the couple into a rancorous legal battle that played out dramatically in the headlines. Ultimately, they reached a legal settlement one year after Joe submitted court documents to dissolve their brief union. But in a recent Instagram post, Sophie has revealed how their equation has evolved by showing support for her ex-husband's new album. The Game of Thrones actress, shared an image of his new album, Music for People Who Believe in Love, on her Instagram Stories earlier last month. She captioned it, 'Go go @joejonas.' The album officially dropped on Friday, May 23. Sophie and Joe began dating in 2016, got engaged in October 2017 and got married on May 1, 2019 in Las Vegas before splitting in September 2023. Earlier this week, Joe, 35, gave some insight into what he feels was the scariest part of getting divorced. Joe gave insight into divorce and his love life during a TalkShopLive stream on May 21. At one point, the performer talked about the track Only Love from his album Music For People Who Believe In Love. 'I was seeing somebody at the time and I was kind of having this idea of dating again,' Jonas recalled. 'It was really scary and intimidating. Love takes different shapes and forms and I was rediscovering what that was.' Joe remembered that someone he was dating - and whom he did not name - had simply told him, 'Well, it's only love. 'I was like, 'Well, when you put it that way…' So we wrote a song about it. Like, it was not a big deal, but it was a big deal to me, and a big deal to them, too.' The former Disney channel star added, 'But it's okay to take a leap of faith and just try again and put yourself out there.' In 2023, it was revealed that Joe and Sophie had split - with their divorce being finalized in September 2024.
