Reasi to become J&K's second district to roll out SMILE scheme for beggers
Deputy Commissioner, Reasi, Nidhi Malik emphasised on swift implementation of SMILE scheme for tackling begging with compassion and opportunity
Launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on February 12, 2022, the SMILE scheme focuses on the rehabilitation, reintegration, and empowerment of beggars, helping them transition into mainstream society through structured support.
The Ministry has identified 50 districts, towns, cities, and locations. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple in District Reasi is one of them.
A key project approval committee meeting, chaired by Malik, was held recently to scrutinize applications from NGOs interested in implementing the scheme.
Out of the three applications received, Prayas Juvenile Aid Centre Society secured the highest score based on the selection criteria established by the ministry. Their project proposal was approved following a detailed review and presentation, which outlined a comprehensive plan including a baseline survey and subsequent rehabilitation efforts.
During the meeting, District Social Welfare Officer Reasi, Sachin Sharma, provided an in-depth briefing on the scheme's objectives and implementation strategy. Prayas NGO shared their vision for the Reasi district, detailing a phased approach to bring vulnerable individuals back into the social fold through education, skill-building, and livelihood opportunities.

The Rajasthan unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has expelled its spokesperson Krishan Kumar Janu for six years after he purportedly criticised the party's treatment of former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik and ex-Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, The Hindu reported on Sunday. The expulsion came after a video where Janu is reportedly heard criticising BJP leaders over what he described as the 'humiliating treatment' meted out to Malik and Dhankhar was widely circulated on social media. Janu claimed that he was deeply hurt after witnessing the 'disdain' shown towards Malik and Dhankhar, both of whom belong to the Jat community, the newspaper reported. The former spokesperson also belongs to the same community. However, in a communiqué on Friday, the BJP cited Janu's comments made in June opposing the appointment of Harshini Kulhari as its Jhunjhunu district president as the reason for his expulsion. BJP leader Onkar Singh Lakhawat claimed that the former spokesperson failed to justify his actions in response to a show cause notice issued to him on June 20, and that this proved 'a breach of discipline', The Hindu reported. Contentious remarks Referring to Malik's death on August 5, Janu claimed that the former Jammu and Kashmir governor's last rites were not conducted with state honours. He also said that Dhankhar was not given a farewell after he had resigned as vice president on July 21. Malik died on August 5 after a prolonged illness at the age of 79. The former governor had attracted controversy after claiming that he was offered a bribe to clear files related to two major projects in Jammu and Kashmir. He had also questioned the Union government over issues related to farmers and the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, among others. Dhankar, on the other hand, had submitted his resignation as vice president on July 21 after citing health reasons. The Opposition had claimed that his resignation was 'totally unexpected' and that there seemed to be more to it than what met the eye. Following his expulsion, Janu told The Indian Express that he had a habit of speaking freely and felt that the party was in the wrong, be it the Dhankhar case or with Malik. 'So, I spoke and wrote against this politics of prejudice and vendetta,' the newspaper quoted him as saying. 'If Jats in the BJP can't speak, then what is the point of them staying in the party? What good can they do for the community if they can't speak out?' He added: 'I had asked questions of Jat leaders in the BJP, be it the MPs or MLAs and not the BJP. But my expulsion means that the party needs deaf and dumb people, not the ones who speak up.'

Remembering Satyapal Malik: At Khatkar toll plaza, khaps to salute governor who became their voice
Jind: The khap panchayats of Haryana have announced that they would be holding a ceremony in the memory of former governor Satyapal Malik at Khatkar toll plaza on Sunday — the venue being a symbolic reference to the deceased BJP leader's support to farmers during the 2020-21 protests. Harikesh Kaabarchaa, the head of Khatkar Khap, said farm organisations and members of at least another three khap panchayats — Kandela, Dharan, Chahal — would participated in the event at Jind, which is being organised as no state honour was extended to Malik on his cremation. "Khatkar toll plaza has been chosen as it was the epicentre of the protests in Jind during the 13-month-long stir against the three agri-marketing laws," said Kaabarchaa. Kaabarchaa added it was at the same toll plaza where Malik had supported the wrestlers' protest against Brij Bhushan Singh. "At the same plaza, when he was a serving governor, Malik had shared his personal experiences and strongly criticised BJP govt over Pulwama and other issues. His connection with farmers and khaps began strengthening after that gesture of support," added Kaabarchaa. In 2023, a day after being summoned by the CBI in a corruption case, Malik, who served as governor of four states, went to surrender at Delhi's RK Puram police station. "At the time, khap leaders and farm groups' representatives from western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan visited his Delhi residence and accompanied him to the police station," said Kaabarchaa. He added they had also honoured Malik at Kandaela village of Jind district in 2022, after the agri-marketing laws were repealed in Dec 2021. "It is heartbreaking that a man who was always saluted during his tenure in office was denied his final salute by the govt," Kaabarchaa added. "This is why we are going to pay our tributes to him like this. This is our salute to the man who became the voice of farmers, soldiers, and wrestlers.
