Zahid to visit New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre
WELLINGTON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is scheduled to visit New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre on Thursday (July 17) to observe the country's disaster and crisis response framework.
Located in the Beehive Bunker beneath New Zealand's Parliament, the visit forms part of the fourth day of his official working trip to the country, in line with his responsibilities as Chairman of Malaysia's Central Disaster Management Committee (JPBP).
The visit aims to gain insights into New Zealand's emergency response systems, inter-agency coordination, and post-disaster recovery strategies - areas for which the country is widely recognised for its preparedness and transparency.
Ahmad Zahid is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with New Zealand's Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, to explore potential cooperation in food security and strategic supply chains.
Later in the day, he will attend a community engagement session with Malaysians in Wellington, where over 250 citizens residing in the country are expected to participate.
The Deputy Prime Minister is scheduled to conclude his working visit and return to Kuala Lumpur on Friday (July 18).
Since arriving in Auckland on Monday (July 14), he has met with local industry leaders and business groups, including the ASEAN-New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC).
On the second day, he travelled to Rotorua for the Māori Business Roundtable, aimed at strengthening collaboration in indigenous and social development initiatives.
On the third day, he was in the capital for meetings with senior New Zealand government officials at the Beehive, as part of ongoing efforts to further enhance Malaysia-New Zealand bilateral relations. - Bernama

Bank Muamalat unveils new step-up profit rate package for first-time homebuyers
KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd has launched a Step-Up Profit Rate (Super) package under the government-backed Skim Jaminan Kredit Perumahan (SJKP). The new offering, known as Smart Mortgage SJKP Super, is designed for first-time homebuyers, particularly those with informal income or limited credit history. It provides a more flexible financing solution and offers funding of up to RM500,000, inclusive of mortgage reducing term takaful or mortgage level term takaful, legal fees and valuation fees. Bank Muamalat president and chief executive officer Khairul Kamarudin said the product builds on the bank's involvement in the SJKP scheme since 2019 and follows the introduction of its smart mortgage offering in 2022. "This innovative offering is designed to ease the financial burden of homeownership, particularly in the early years of financing. "Through the Super, customers benefit from lower monthly instalments for the first five years, giving them breathing room to manage other financial obligations or build their savings," he said in a statement today. Khairul added that the bank has also introduced the SJKP Madani Step-Up variant, which provides up to 120 per cent financing to further support its customers. This extended coverage includes not just the home but also renovation, furnishings, and fittings. "In collaboration with reputable property developers across the country, Bank Muamalat is actively promoting affordable housing projects under the SJKP scheme, expanding opportunities for eligible Malaysians to secure their first homes," added Khairul. The SJKP programme, established in 2008 and managed by Syarikat Jaminan Kredit Perumahan Bhd, is under the Minister of Finance Inc. It aims to assist underserved Malaysians, particularly those without fixed or formal income in purchasing their first homes. Its principal officer Datuk Fazlur Rahman Zainuddin said the programme targets groups such as gig workers, farmers, fishermen, and night-market or petty traders. "This year, the government has allocated RM10 billion worth of guarantee for 2025, including RM5 billion specifically for the Step-Up financing initiative. "As of May 31 2025, 88,507 recipients have successfully purchased their first homes through the scheme," said Fazlur.

Move to tighten MyKad safeguards ahead of RON95 subsidy rollout
ALOR STAR: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is tightening safeguards to prevent potential abuse of MyKad in the purchase of subsidised RON95 petrol, ahead of the rollout of a targeted fuel subsidy system. This follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that the price of RON95 petrol will be reduced from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre under the subsidy rationalisation plan, with implementation details expected to be announced in September. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the ministry and its relevant agencies were proactively identifying potential loopholes in the system. "For instance, foreign-registered vehicles are not allowed to buy subsidised fuel. But if a MyKad is used by these drivers, then we must be alert," she said during a press conference after an Op Kesan 4.0 enforcement inspection at a hypermarket here. Fuziah said the upcoming mechanism will rely on MyKad tracking to ensure subsidies reach only eligible Malaysians. "The fuel price reduction will take effect simultaneously with the new targeted system. Since it's for our citizens only, the use of MyKad is essential," she said. She said any unusual or excessive fuel purchase activity would be traceable through the system's records, providing an additional safeguard against misuse. She added that the ministry had also identified scenarios where a single identity card might be used repeatedly, raising red flags in the system.

Dr M to 'Turun' as abuse of power allegations come full circle
Twenty-five years on, the political tables have turned spectacularly. Dr Mahathir Mohamad is now gearing up to march against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, echoing the same accusations Anwar once hurled at him in 1998. Mahathir, in true theatrical form, upped the ante. He pinned suicides and murders on Anwar as well. In a video posted on social media this afternoon, the centenarian called on 'Malaysians of all races...
