The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X is the fastest American car ever around the Nürburgring

Back in December last year, Ford announced that its new-but-not-a-diesel GTD had set a Nürburgring lap time of 6m 57.6s, making it the fastest American car ever to lap the Green Hell. Then, in May this year Ford went back to Germany and shaved 5.5 seconds off that time for a new record of 6m 52.072s.
Unfortunately, that record has now been blitzed by not just one, but two different Chevrolet Corvettes.

Yep, the bonkers ZR1X – the hybridised, all-wheel drive 1,250bhp Corvette – is now the new American record holder, with a blistering lap time of 6m 49.275s. And the 'standard' ZR1 with its twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 sending 1,064bhp to the rear wheels alone wasn't far behind, with an official 'Ring time of 6m 50.763s.
Both of those cars were equipped with the track-focussed ZTK Package, and both lap times were set by non-professional racecar drivers. Wait, what? You might like
Yep, the drivers were Chevrolet engineers who helped to develop the cars, which means vehicle dynamics engineer Drew Cattell in the ZR1X now holds the fastest lap time of any non-pro driver at the Nürburgring. Nice!
Of course, it's not like Cattell had never seen the 'Ring before – he already had 600 laps under his belt before this record attempt. Fellow vehicle dynamics engineer Brian Wallace had already completed 425 laps before his go in the ZR1.

Still mightily impressive though, and Chevrolet says that it highlights 'the depth of talent and performance within General Motors'.
Oh, and while it was at it, Chevrolet also decided to send the naturally aspirated, 670bhp Corvette Z06 round. That set a time of 7m 11.826s with vehicle performance manager Aaron Link at the wheel.
'No auto manufacturer has done a Nürburgring lap attempt like this before,' said GM president Mark Reuss. 'From development through production, and now at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the Green Hell, we have clearly shown there is no limit to what our GM engineers and vehicles can accomplish. Shedeur Sanders' NFL hopes suffer double blow amid Cleveland Browns quarterback battle
Shedeur Sanders' dreams of making an NFL roster may have just been torpedoed with a pair of Monday messages amid the Cleveland Browns stout quarterback competition. First, on the Browns' depth chart, Sanders was listed last of the four quarterbacks who were on the roster over the weekend. In order, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillion Gabriel were listed ahead of the Colorado alumnus. Pickett and Gabriel both have hamstring injuries at the moment, with Sanders not at full health with a shoulder issue, prompting the latter half of the double trouble. The Browns signed Tyler Huntley on Monday, adding a fifth quarterback to their training camp roster. Huntley has years of NFL experience and further complicates the path to a roster spot for Sanders. With Huntley's addition, there is no doubt one of the five, at least, will no longer be with the organization in a little over a month. Cleveland could take the strategy of having three quarterbacks on its active roster, while keeping the fourth on the practice squad, which has all four men previously thought to be vying for the job with the Browns. Now, Huntley, gives Sanders another road block to NFL success, as he spent part of last season in Cleveland. Flacco is nearly guaranteed to make the 53-man roster, with the other four quarterbacks now vying for the other two roster spots. Pickett had previously impressed the coaching staff, which may leave Sanders' chances truly at one in three. Sanders already faced an uphill battle heading into training camp being selected behind Gabriel in April's NFL Draft and having less experience than Flacco and Pickett. The incline just increased significantly with the inclusion of Huntley and his standing on the depth chart.

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Members of MLB's San Francisco Giants broke bread with former players from the NFL's New York Giants on Sunday, serving up a tasty punchline to a quirky, decade-old sports radio moment. Ten years ago, a caller known as "Dan in Warwick" phoned into Mike Francesa's sports talk radio show with a burning question: Did the baseball Giants - who moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958 - and the football Giants ever get together, since they once shared a city and a name? "What are you talking about?" Francesa replied, bewildered, before promptly ending the call. The odd inquiry lingered in sports lore, unanswered - until now. This weekend, as the San Francisco Giants were in town to play the New York Mets, current Giants stars Logan Webb and Matt Chapman met up for a meal with former New York Giants players Eli Manning and Shaun O'Hara. The scene was captured in a playful video, where Francesa himself opens a door to discover the two Giants squads enjoying a meal beneath a banner proclaiming their "Annual Meetup." The festivities included two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning watching a highlight reel of Webb's high school days as a quarterback. "I think you made the right choice to stick with baseball," Manning joked, prompting laughter from Webb. "I did, I did," Webb replied with a grin. The group even brainstormed ideas for next year's Giants gathering before it was revealed to be a promotion for the coming fifth season of the Eli Manning Show. "I was thinking next year we should have a picnic," Manning proposed. "We should do a relay race," Webb suggested. "Giants-Giants barbecue," Chapman chimed in. "Just Giants barbecue, I don't think you need both of them," said O'Hara. Meanwhile, the New York Giants put the spotlight back on the mysterious caller who started it all. "Dan in Warwick, you were right," the team posted on social media, sharing playful photos of the players together. After a decade, Dan's question finally had its answer - the Giants do get together, and now, they have the pictures to prove it.

Isaac Collins' 3-run homer eases Brewers past Braves
August 5 - Quinn Priester threw seven quality innings and Isaac Collins hit a three-run home run to propel the visiting Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday. Priester (11-2) won his fifth consecutive start, allowing just one run on two hits, while striking out four and walking two. The Brewers mustered just three hits, but Collins' 376-foot homer to right field was enough to help the club post its seventh win in eight tries. In the ninth, closer Trevor Megill needed just seven pitches to retire the Braves in order, picking up his 25th save. Erick Fedde (3-12) surrendered three runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out none. Jurickson Profar homered and walked twice, but the Braves fell to 5-11 after the All-Star break. Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Profar clubbed Priester's first pitch of the game for his fourth home run of the season. Fedde hit William Contreras on a 3-2 pitch to begin the top of the fourth, before Andrew Vaughn singled and Christian Yelich grounded into a force out. Collins then connected on his seventh homer of the year to give the Brewers a 3-1 edge. After walking Contreras and retiring Vaughn in the sixth, Fedde was replaced by Aaron Bummer, who threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Priester retired the final seven Braves batters he faced, before he was relieved by Abner Uribe in the bottom of the eighth.
