Meet the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' 2025 Cast & Characters

Cosmopolitan18-07-2025
Twenty-eight years after the release of I Know What You Did Last Summer, another group of friends are being asked the daunting question: What the heck should we do now that we accidentally killed someone with our car? Of course, the answer isn't "Call the police! What is wrong with you?!" This is a slasher movie we're talking about! The friends have to keep it a secret and attempt to move on with their lives, only to receive mysterious messages from a serial killer a year later. A serial killer who knows what they did last summer.
The new sequel has a similar premise to the first movie from 1997, but it isn't a reboot. Instead, the new group of friends are able to get in touch with two characters who survived the original massacre from the "Fisherman" killer, Julie James and Ray Bronson, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their roles. (The actors also played the characters in the 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which saw the killer stalk them in the Bahamas.)
But while fans of the original are very familiar with Hewitt and Prinze Jr., there's a bunch of new stars joining in for the new movie. Read on to learn more about them and the characters they're bringing to the big screen.
Madelyn Cline plays Danica, a member of the friend group who makes a promise not to reveal what happened with the car accident. Fans of Outer Banks will know her for starring as Sarah. She also appears in a couple episodes of Stranger Things and in the movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

The next friend is Ava, who is played by Chase Sui Wonders. The actor is known for her role in another ensemble horror movies, Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, and she currently stars on the TV series The Studio as Quinn.

Next up we've got another member of the friend group, Milo. Jonah Hauer-King takes on this role. You may know him for a very different type of movie: The live-action Little Mermaid remake in which he played Prince Eric. The actor recently appeared in the British series Doctor Who.

Another friend being stalked by the killer is Tyriq Withers, who plays Teddy. Withers has had roles in the TV shows Atlanta, The Game, and Tell Me Lies. And he was in another remake of a fan favorite movie, the 2024 version of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.
Instagram: @tyriqwithers
The fifth and final member of the friend group is Stevie, who is played by Sarah Pidgeon. Pidgeon has had starring roles in the series The Wilds and Tiny Beautiful Things, and was in the 2024 film The Friend.

Moving on to the characters outside of our main group, we have Billy Campbell as Grant Spencer, the father of Teddy and a rich real estate developer. Campbell is best known for his roles in television shows, including Dynasty, Once and Again, The O.C., and the Canadian show Cardinal.
Instagram: N/A
The character Tyler Trevino is a podcaster, who delves into the 1997 massacre. Gabbriette Bechtel—who usually just goes by Gabbriette—plays Tyler. Gabbriette is a model and the singer for the band Nasty Cherry. This is her second feature-length film following 2025's Idiotka.
Instagram: @gabriette
Austin Nichols appears in I Know What You Did Last Summer as Pastor Judah. The actor has had starring roles in One Tree Hill and The Walking Dead, and his movies include The Day After Tomorrow and The Six Triple Eight.
Instagram: @austinnichols
Last up we have our returning stars. Prinze is playing Ray for the third time. The second movie ended with him and Julie as a married couple following another escape from "the Fisherman." Aside from I Know What You Did Last Summer, Prinze is known for movies including She's All That and Scooby-Doo. More recently, he starred in the Punky Brewster reboot and has performed voice roles in various Star Wars projects, including The Rise of Skywalker.
Instagram: @realfreddieprinze
And Hewitt is back as final girl Julie James. Like Prinze Jr., in the '90s, she was a teen idol. In her case, it was thanks to roles in Party of Five and Can't Hardly Wait. She has also had starring roles in the shows Ghost Whisperer and Criminal Minds, and she currently stars in 9-1-1.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' costume designer on Fisherman's new look, Easter egg

New sequel, new hook, new look. The Fisherman is back to terrorize another group of friends in the latest 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel, and with him is a fresh outfit to torment one more generation of scary movie fans. Mari-An Ceo, the costume designer behind the slasher villain's new look, has opened up about how this movie's Fisherman costume differs from the one featured in the 1997 original. Advertisement 13 Costume designer Mari-An Ceo at the Los Angeles premiere of 'MaXXXine' on June 24, 2024. Getty Images for A24 'The original one was basically made out of just vinyl, which cinematically looked great in the movie from 1997,' Ceo exclusively told The Post. 'But of course, we've got to make everything much more intense now with how they shoot, with the new digital cameras and whatnot.' 'So we actually went through quite a process of testing different fabrics,' she shared. 'The fabric we ended up with was a wax cotton, and we painted quite a bit into it to make it look like it was wet.' Advertisement After doing several camera tests with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and cinematographer Elisha Christian, Ceo and her team created the slicker seen on-screen in the new 'IKWYDLS.' 13 The Fisherman in the original 1997 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 13 The Fisherman on the poster for this year's new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' Sony Pictures While the original Fisherman wore a standard yellow slicker and hat made of vinyl, the new version features a darker raincoat and hood made of wax cotton. Advertisement 'So it was actually a lot of work just to get that jacket to where it was that they really loved filming it, and it had to move and do all the special things that you need a costume to do, especially in a movie like this,' Ceo added. Surprisingly, Ceo revealed that the new movie was not initially going to include a redesign for the Fisherman's costume. 13 The original Fisherman's costume was made of vinyl and included a basic ice hook for a weapon. 'And then as we were looking at it on the actor, and it's moving, Jen's like, 'I don't know. Maybe we can do something else?' And we all sort of thought that.' After playing around with different concepts regarding how the costume could look, they came up with one new idea in particular. 'So it became this whole thing,' Ceo continued. 'Like, you know, maybe it's a hood, maybe it's this, and we had all these different ideas. I was like, let's try it.' 13 The original 1997 Fisherman also wore a vinyl fisherman's hat to hide his identity. Columbia Pictures 13 The new Fisherman's costume includes a hood built into the wax cotton slicker. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 'We just kind of landed on the hood, which was funny,' she added. 'So that was the redesign for the new movie.' Besides a darker and more menacing new costume, the Fisherman in the latest 'IKWYDLS' is also armed with an upgraded ice hook to torture and kill his victims. Like the old Fisherman slicker and the new redesigned one, the new ice hook has some major differences compared to the original. 'Props and the art department were also incredible on this. They had to make it a little more dangerous and pointy, but also make it safe.' 'With anything that we do, they had many of them doing different things for close-ups and pursuits and all that,' she added. Advertisement Besides the direct connections between the 1997 original and the 2025 sequel, Ceo revealed that she and her team included some throwbacks to the first film by way of the costumes worn by the new cast members. 'I did watch the original, of course, before doing it,' she shared. 'And we did want to do a few throwbacks, like Jennifer Love Hewitt in the original wore these overalls. And so we ended up doing overalls on Sarah Pidgeon in the finale, which is really fun.' 13 Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Julie James in the original 1997 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 13 Sarah Pidgeon's overalls in this scene are a throwback to Jennifer Love Hewitt's overalls in the original. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection Advertisement 'We tried to do a few homages from the original,' Ceo told The Post. 'Their clothes were just based on the characters for this. But we did reference some things from the original for what we did here.' As for the movie's costume design itself, Ceo said that she was proud of how it all ended up looking on the big screen. 'We put a lot of thought and effort into it,' she said. 'I liked how everybody wore it, and they were all super happy and comfortable in their clothes.' 'I'm proud of the costumes, for sure, and I'm proud of the crew, the cast and everybody involved in it.'

Sarah Michelle Gellar 'wasn't supposed' to return for 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel

Spoilers below for 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' Talk about a last-minute twist. Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn't initially meant to return as slain beauty queen Helen Shivers in the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel, according to costume designer Mari-An Ceo. Advertisement 16 Sarah Michelle Gellar at the Los Angeles premiere of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' on July 14, 2025. AFP via Getty Images 16 Sarah Michelle Gellar and husband Freddie Prinze Jr. at the Los Angeles premiere of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' on July 14, 2025. Starbuck/AFF-USA/Shutterstock Ceo, who has also worked on other horror films like last year's 'MaXXXine,' revealed that Gellar was only on set to support her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., who reprised his original role as Ray Bronson. Advertisement It was then that director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who is Gellar's close friend in real life, and writer Sam Lansky approached the actress about reprising her role as Helen for a surprise dream sequence cameo. 'Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn't supposed to be in our movie at all,' Ceo claimed exclusively told The Post. 'She was there with her kids, with Freddie, to come and just hang out.' 16 Costume designer Mari-An Ceo at the Los Angeles premiere of 'MaXXXine' on June 23, 2024. Getty Images Advertisement 'And then [Robinson], they're very good friends, she said she wanted to do this dream sequence,' Ceo explained. Gellar and Prinze, who married in 2002 and have since welcomed two children, co-starred together in the original 1997 'IKWYDLS.' Despite being brutally murdered by the Fisherman shortly after becoming Croaker Queen of the 1996 Southport Beauty Pageant, Gellar makes a short surprise cameo in the sequel when Madelyn Cline's character, Danica Richards, falls asleep at a police station. 16 Sarah Michelle Gellar as Helen Shivers in the original 1997 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection Advertisement 16 Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role as Helen Shivers for a surprise cameo in the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' Sony Pictures Gellar's Helen appears in Danica's dream and taunts Danica while dressed in her full Croaker Queen costume. But bringing Gellar's dream sequence cameo to life was not easy, Ceo admitted. The new 'IKWYDLS' was filmed in Australia and the Croaker Queen crown was either lost or destroyed after the original movie was finished filming. '[Robinson] said she wanted to do this dream sequence, so we replicated her look for the dream sequence, but we needed the old Croaker Queen crown that didn't exist anymore,' the costume designer explained. 'And we had to remake that in Australia, in like the smallest window of time,' she added. 16 Sarah Michelle Gellar's character, Helen Shivers, wearing the iconic Croaker Queen crown in the original 1997 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 16 Sarah Michelle Gellar filming a scene for the original 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection Luckily, Ceo and her team were able to remake the crown in time to shoot Gellar's cameo. Everyone on set then took turns trying the Croaker Queen crown on. Advertisement 'It was beyond anything any of us could imagine,' Ceo recalled. 'We got the box with the crown in it, and everybody had to put it on.' 'Sarah was like, 'Oh my god, this is amazing. It's even better than the original,'' she continued. 'We were all excited. It became like Croaker Queen Day, and everybody had to come see the crown.' 'It's just an homage to the original one, and I'm so glad we were able to do it.' 16 A poster for the original 1997 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Co Advertisement 16 A poster for the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel. Sony Pictures Gellar recently opened up about the surprise cameo when she shared several behind-the-scenes photos from her time on set. 'Spoiler alert! Helen Shivers is still dead,' Gellar, 48, began via Instagram on Wednesday. 'When anyone asked me if I was going to be in the new movie, I never lied. I always answered 'I am dead.' 'And honestly I didn't see how I could be in the movie until [Robinson] and [Lansky] pitched me that crazy dream sequence with [Cline],' she added. 'We were all really excited for audiences to get to see that and get a little bit of extra love that they weren't expecting,' Prinze, 49, told People after the movie's July 18 release. 'It's nice to know a secret, and to know how well-received it's going to be, months and months before it ever goes out there,' he went on. 'To give people another taste of that, I just think it was awesome. 'We wanted to bring Madelyn and Sarah together on screen, and I'm so excited about the results,' Robinson added. 'I feel like it's just so fun.' Besides Gellar and Prinze, the new 'IKWYDLS' sequel sees the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie James. 16 Austin Nichols, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Freddie Prinze Jr., Gabriette Bechtel and Billy Campbell at the Los Angeles premiere of the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' As for the new cast members, Cline was joined by Chase Sui Wonders (Ava Brucks), Jonah Hauer-King (Milo Griffin), Tyriq Withers (Teddy Spencer), Sarah Pidgeon (Stevie Ward) and Gabbriette Bechtel (Tyler Trevino). 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' is now in theaters.

Girl's Bond With 'Nanny' St. Bernard Puppy Melts Hearts

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A friendship between a 3-year-old and beloved St. Bernard puppy has melted hearts on the internet. Mom Beth Richardson (@teddy_the_saintbernard) posted a reel on Instagram with moments from Teddy's first year, where the 140-pound "nanny dog" is shown growing up alongside her daughter Runa. Richardson, 34, who shares 8-year-old Lillah and 3-year-old Runa with husband James Richardson, 31, told Newsweek her love for big dog breeds started when she watched Beethoven as a child. Girl, 3, cuddling St. Bernard puppy. Girl, 3, cuddling St. Bernard puppy. @teddy_the_saintbernard "We also grew up with Great Danes who are also supersized and my adoration for giant dogs just didn't end," she said. Though she once had a rescue chihuahua in her 20s, life with two young children felt like the right moment to bring a gentle giant into their home. "After searching for a while, we found Teddy—and it just felt meant to be," Beth said. When Teddy joined the family, Runa had just turned two. Since then, the two have grown up together—and grown into best friends. "She's really never known life without him," Beth told Newsweek. "At first, Runa was completely besotted with Teddy—maybe a little obsessed! Now, she's learned to watch out for his big paws and to brace herself when he has the zoomies." The two do everything together: brushing, feeding, playing. If Runa's doing something, Teddy's usually a part of it—even if he's just in the way. As a giant ball of "floof," Beth told Newsweek that he has little spatial awareness. "[He] crushes our feet every day, I think he thinks he is the size of a 'normal' dog. But we honestly wouldn't have him any other way. He loves strokes and belly rubs, and he loves having his ears stroked best," she said. Beth's reel has clocked up a million views and over 73,000 likes. Dozens of Instagram users found the bond between Runa and Teddy adorable, flooding the comments section with heart emojis. Beth told Newsweek her goal is to bring a dose of reality to social media. She also hopes the video helps change perceptions about large breeds. "Just because Teddy is a giant dog, it doesn't mean he's more difficult or dangerous," she said. "As a mom, it's been wonderful to see them grow together. Knowing that Runa's earliest memories will include Teddy as her first dog feels really special." Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
