Max Verstappen hoping rule change can propel title charge
Max Verstappen returns to the scene of his maiden Formula One victory chasing his fourth consecutive Spanish success this weekend with his Red Bull team hoping a rule change will end McLaren's supremacy.
The four-time world champion triumphed on his Red Bull debut as a teenager at the Circuit de Catalunya in the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix and will hope another win, his fifth in Spain, will propel him into the thick of the title race.
The 27-year-old Dutchman is 25 points adrift of championship leader Oscar Piastri and 22 behind his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, who their rivals believe could be hampered by the introduction of strict front wing flexibility tests.
'It's a significant change,' said Red Bull boss Christian Horner of the requirement for much stiffer front wings.
'There will be some effect and, of course, the teams have anticipated this so it may well be neutral. Or it may affect tyre degradation. It doesn't make life easier!'
McLaren's excellent aerodynamic car, designed to enable their drivers to manage tyre-wear and deliver fast times, may be more hit by the tightening up of the rule than others.
'But we don't know how it will affect them,' added Horner.
Formula One announced the clampdown on so-called 'flexi wings' in January.
The change left the teams with time to prepare and may have a dramatic effect on performance and the outcome of the season.
'With 16 races left, there is a long way to go,' said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.
'The team is pushing to find performance and this weekend's updated front wing technical directive will provide another level of intrigue.'
After a dismal pointless weekend in Monte Carlo, Wolff expects an upturn from his 'silver arrows' drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Ferrari's Fred Vasseur said: 'This can be a game-changer for everybody because we don't know the impact on every team.'
McLaren have won six out of the eight races this year and sit 172 points clear of Mercedes in the teams' title race, but know the 'mixed' Spanish track, where there are as many slow corners as fast, may be a challenge for their car.
But after strong results everywhere this season, except on the high-speed tracks at Suzuka and Imola where Max Verstappen won for Red Bull, they will be under scrutiny and pressure.
As will Ferrari after an inconsistent and mostly disappointing start to the season as seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton continues to seek his first win with the team at a venue where he has won six times – a record he shares with Michael Schumacher.
Two Spanish drivers will take part this weekend: Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, due to start his 410th race at the age of 43, and Carlos Sainz, 30, of Williams, set for his 215th race.
Their presence has maintained the sport's relatively-new modern popularity and the growth of big crowds at Spanish Grands Prix.
Furthermore, Sainz, born in Madrid, is an ambassador for a future race near the capital, from 2027, while Alonso fulfills a similar role for the Catalan track, which runs out of contract next year – a conflict that enables them to reflect Spain's most classic and enduring sporting rivalry.

'Humbling': Rachel Kolisi 'downgrades' to affordable car
Rachel Kolisi has swapped driving luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and Land Rovers for a more affordable ride, a Yaris! Despite being the former wife of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, Rachel has been praised for her humility and simplicity. In a since-deleted Instagram post, Rachel Kolisi posted a series of pictures of her latest ride – an old Toyota Yaris. In the post, the former Springbok WAG rode around in the modest vehicle, which she also used to pick up her ex Siya Kolisi's sister Liphelo. The influencer and philanthropist captioned the post: 'Life has a funny way of humbling you just when you think you've got it all figured out. One day you're riding high, the next you're asking a friend to borrow their spare car and googling 'how to parallel park a Yaris with dignity.' The mother-of-two added: 'It's not forever. It's just a chapter. But honestly? Betsy (the car) and I are kind of vibing, and I still nail clutch control.' Rachel Kolisi deleted an IG post about her modest car. Images via Instagram: @rachelkolisi Just hours earlier, Rachel had posted pictures of her 'last day' in her Mercedes-Benz. It's unclear if the luxury car was hers or possibly a brand endorsement deal. Rachel Kolisi isn't the only Capetonian who will be hitting the road in a Yaris. Former DA leader Helen Zille revealed in March that she would be finally upgrading her trusted Corsa of 25 years to another affordable option. In the comments section, Helen was asked what car she would be driving next. 'A Toyota Yaris,' she responded. According to Toyota, the Yaris debuted in South Africa in 2005 and quickly became one of their best-selling models globally. In recent years, 'slow sales' have seen the popular car being discontinued in countries around the world. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Piastri sets the pace in second Spanish GP practice
Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri kept McLaren on top in second Spanish Grand Prix practice on Friday after teammate and title rival Lando Norris set the pace in the opening session. The Australian lapped the Circuit de Catalunya with a quickest time of 1:12.760 seconds after Norris, winner in Monaco last Sunday, set a best of 1:13.718 in the early afternoon heat. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, last year's winner, was second and third respectively in the sessions with Mercedes' George Russell Piastri's closest rival in practice two – 0.286 slower – with Norris fourth (+0.310) Norris has closed the gap to Piastri in the standings to only three points after eight of 24 rounds and will retake the lead on Sunday if he wins. Verstappen, who took his first F1 win at the circuit in 2016, missed some 20 minutes of the first session with mechanics working to change the car's rear suspension. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton - winner a record-equalling six times in Spain – was third on the timesheets in practice one but only 11th later on when teammate Charles Leclerc was fifth fastest. Friday was the first sighting of the new front wings required to meet stricter flex tests introduced for the Spanish weekend, but there was no immediate indication of any significant change. "I think it's going to take more than one session to see if there is an impact. Or if so, how it's affected the different cars," said Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. "It didn't sound from the drivers' comments too different to a normal Friday." Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli was sixth fastest in practice two with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso seventh and Alpine's Pierre Gasly eighth. Racing Bulls duo Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson ended up ninth and 10th on the timesheets.

Mercedes Vision V is an ultra-luxury van for the well heeled
The next-generation V-Class will have a flagship chauffeur-driven VLS model that redefines luxurious people carriers, says Mercedes-Benz. The opulent four-seat grand limousine is essentially an S-Class van and is due to be launched in 2026. An electrically powered concept version called the Vision V has started a global tour after its world premiere at last month's Auto Shanghai show in China, with its first stopover in Dubai this week. Regular versions of the next V-Class will carry a VLE badge and carry up to eight people, acting as leisure vehicles for families or exclusive VIP shuttles. But the four-seater VLS will take it to the next level with top-shelf exclusivity and an unprecedented immersive, digital experience for one percenters. The Vision V concept car has a luxurious 'private lounge' rear cabin decked out like the first class section of an aircraft. The two-seater rear lounge has a huge 65' cinema screen that can be extended and retracted from the floor, operated via a touchpad in the centre console. The ultra-sized cinema screen with 4K resolution combines with a 42-speaker surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos along with seven projectors in the headliner and floor to transform the interior into a unique immersive space. Passengers can choose seven different worlds of experience: Entertainment; Relax; Gaming; Work; Shopping; Discovery; and Karaoke. An intelligent, switchable glass wall separates the private lounge from the driver's area. The glass can be changed from transparent to opaque, either completely or in sections. 'The Vision V is a luxurious and elegant chauffeur-driven limousine that allows one to pamper themselves in a whole new world of comfort,' says a Mercedes Vans spokesperson. 'Analogue craftsmanship merges with an immersive user experience to create a holistic experience with a cocooning effect.' Aided by illuminated and retractable running boards, passengers enter the luxurious rear sanctum through a large side door that automatically slides open. The rear seating area is exceptionally spacious, with décor that blends elegance with technology. Traditionally crafted materials blend with hyper-modern, tech-savvy design elements. Crystal white Nappa leather and shimmering white silk contrast with large decorative elements made of open-pore burr wood. Display cabinets are set into the dark wood trim along the side walls and ambient lighting creates an individualised and cosy living-room atmosphere. The centre console between the two individual seats is a display cabinet. It has a touchpad for operating the infotainment system as well as a fold-out table imprinted with a high-quality chessboard. The futuristically designed seats can recline into beds, and a fragrance dispenser is housed in an elegant, polished aluminium bottle behind the centre console. The Vision V's design features an illuminated Mercedes star on the bonnet and chrome radiator grille with illuminated glass louvres. The headlights have the three-pointed Mercedes star. When the passengers approach the Vision V, they are greeted by a dynamic and artistic light show in all the louvres. The 24' wheels feature illuminated louvres and the large rear window is framed by a light band that serves as a tail light and brake light. It is not known which of these dazzling exterior features will make it into the production model. Mercedes hasn't provided details on powertrains and specifications, but petrol and electric options are expected to be carried over to the next generation.
