Coconut vendor's daughter represents India in Tokyo Expo
Gadag: Rakshita Churchihal, a Class 10 student from the govt high school in Shingatalur, Gadag district, was selected to participate in an international science exhibition in Tokyo.
Moved by an incident where a hot vessel injured a schoolgirl, she developed a hot vessel carrier model, which was noticed at a national exhibition in April.
Her parents, Andanashetti and Iravva, sell coconuts at Guddad Veerabhadreshwar temple. Rakshita told TOI that she pursued her primary education at a local govt primary school. "As I read many reports of hot dishes falling on school students, I was thinking of a solution and discussed it with our science teacher.
As per his guidance, I prepared a blueprint and went to a local mechanic to make a device," she shared.
Ravi Devaraddi, the science teacher, said that Rakshita was firm on her idea. "It was exhibited in the Inspire Manak awards, a flagship programme implemented by the Union govt to encourage talented students to study science and pursue research careers, implemented through the state govt. As it was selected in the taluk, district, and state-level exhibitions, it was selected for the national exhibition held in Sept 2024, from where it was selected for the Sakura Science High School Programme (SSHP) of the Japanese science and technology agency.

1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The state cabinet, under the chairmanship of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Friday approved a comprehensive five-year biotechnology development scheme with an outlay of Rs 1,113.50 crore. The programme will be implemented from 2025-26 to 2029-30. The 'Development of Biotechnology' initiative, comprising 17 sub-schemes, aims to transform Odisha into a knowledge-driven bio-economy by leveraging the state's rich biodiversity and existing research infrastructure. "This scheme will create a robust ecosystem for innovation, incubation and investment in the biotechnology sector," a govt statement said. Mumbai: The world of medical research is battling its own version of cyber frauds: predatory or 'pseudo' journals, deceptive publications that claim to be scholarly but rarely follow ethical publishing practices and seek hefty payment from authors. On Friday, Dr Himmatrao Bawaskar (75), a Mahad-based physician who won a Padma Shri in 2022 and is known for his rural Maharashtra medical practice and research, wrote in 'The Lancet' about his two-year struggle with a predatory journal that swiftly published his work, then started demanding 1,000 pounds and issued threats when he objected. "I received threatening emails stating they would take serious action and damage my reputation in India," he said. Mahad-based Dr Himmatrao Bawaskar, whose pioneering work in anti-venom for scorpions and snakes has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals, was so "devastated" by his struggle with a predatory journal that he developed "anxiety, insomnia and palpitation". Within six months, the 75-year-old doctor lost 8 kgs and needed psychiatric help. While medical research paves the way for new treatments, these journals are undermining its credibility. Dr Bawaskar's ordeal began when he submitted his self-funded diabetes research to high-impact journals. After many rejections, a case report journal approached him. "In my submission to this journal, I stated I work without funding and would not be able to pay fees," he said. Yet the journal sent him a proof in a couple of days. "I was shocked—how could the peer review and publication process be completed so quickly? I again appealed, stating my inability to pay. The journal ignored my requests and proceeded to publish the article, then sent me an invoice with exorbitant fee," he added. The journal then sent threats and said they were giving him "a 40% discount." "But during a call with my son who is a cardiologist in the US, my wife mentioned my stress to him," said the doctor. His son identified the predatory nature of the journal and blocked their communications. While the doctor hasn't paid the journal, this experience has prompted him to work out a checklist. He said, "Since this episode, I have not attempted to publish again. Instead, I find fulfilment in seeing my patients recover and walk again—living testaments to my diagnosis and management; these are my true publications." Telangana: MoS Defence Sanjay Seth visits Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) in Secunderabad
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 6 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, visited Military College of Electronics & Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) on Friday. He was briefed by the Commandant, Lt Gen Neeraj Varshney, VSM, about the training activities at the institution. He interacted with the soldiers and visited the new Drone Training Lab, 'Drone Alaya', and discussed ways and means to develop indigenous anti-drone systems to prevent Kamikaze attacks. He witnessed the new projects of staff on radars in super high-altitude areas and appreciated the work of EME technicians in Operation Sindoor and MCEME's initiatives in promoting Atmanirbharta in defence technologies along with MSMEs & Startups. Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth also planted a tree on MCEME's premises. Earlier in the day, Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, visited Ordnance Factory Medak in Telangana. Seth was received by Sanjay Dwivedi, CMD/AVNL, in the presence of Satyabrata Mukherjee, Director/Operations. As per a release, Sanjay Seth inspected the production facilities and enquired about the production schedules. The Union Minister was shown all the products manufactured at OF Medak. The visit ended successfully on a positive note. Earlier, Sanjay Seth announced the expansion of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) by three lakh cadets across the country. Several states have already agreed to support this plan and have committed to fast-tracking the necessary training infrastructure, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence. 'He also announced the planned expansion of NCC by Three lakh cadets across the country with several States already extending their concurrence and committing to fast-track the necessary training infrastructure,' the MoD statement read. 'National Cadet Corps (NCC) is an organisation that instils the feeling of nationalism, service... PM Modi has resolved that the number of cadets in the NCC should be between 17-20 lakhs... All the states positively contribute to it and we will achieve the target shortly...' Seth said. (ANI)
