Coconut vendor's daughter represents India in Tokyo Expo
Gadag: Rakshita Churchihal, a Class 10 student from the govt high school in Shingatalur, Gadag district, was selected to participate in an international science exhibition in Tokyo.
Moved by an incident where a hot vessel injured a schoolgirl, she developed a hot vessel carrier model, which was noticed at a national exhibition in April.
Her parents, Andanashetti and Iravva, sell coconuts at Guddad Veerabhadreshwar temple. Rakshita told TOI that she pursued her primary education at a local govt primary school. "As I read many reports of hot dishes falling on school students, I was thinking of a solution and discussed it with our science teacher.
As per his guidance, I prepared a blueprint and went to a local mechanic to make a device," she shared.
Ravi Devaraddi, the science teacher, said that Rakshita was firm on her idea. "It was exhibited in the Inspire Manak awards, a flagship programme implemented by the Union govt to encourage talented students to study science and pursue research careers, implemented through the state govt. As it was selected in the taluk, district, and state-level exhibitions, it was selected for the national exhibition held in Sept 2024, from where it was selected for the Sakura Science High School Programme (SSHP) of the Japanese science and technology agency.
