Democracy and ‘goondaism' cannot coexist, asserts BJP leader C.T. Ravi in Kalaburagi
Launching a scathing attack on the State government, especially Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge, BJP leader C.T. Ravi declared on Saturday that democracy and 'goondaism' cannot function side-by-side.
Mr. Ravi addressed reporters at the Aiwan-e-Shahi government guest house in Kalaburagi, before he participated in the BJP's 'Kalaburagi Chalo' protest. The demonstration was organised to condemn, what the BJP described as, the illegal detention of Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, who was reportedly held for nearly five hours at the Chittapur government guest house.
'We wish to remind Mr. Priyank that the Nizam's rule in this region ended long ago. He is not the Nizam's heir and should not behave like one. We are living in a democracy. If he gets rid of Nizamshahi, he will flourish in democracy,' Mr. Ravi stated.
Recalling the Emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Mr. Ravi asserted that the people of India had already taught a lesson to those who once sought to intimidate them by proclaiming 'Indira is India and India is Indira'.
'People have answered the Emergency. The person who imposed Emergency was defeated in Rae Bareli in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections. That was the people's verdict, and a similar verdict will be given to your goondaism in Kalaburagi,' Mr. Ravi.
Justifying Mr. Narayanaswamy's contentious remarks likening Mr. Priyank to a dog, Mr. Ravi contended that the Minister was not even fit for such a comparison. 'A dog has a special place in Indian culture. It is known for loyalty. I don't consider a person who criticises [the government] even in matters of national interest a loyal person. He is not suitable for that word also,' he said.
Highlighting the historical struggle of the people against the razakars to end the Nizam's rule, Mr. Ravi stressed that the region's populace, who had suppressed attempts to establish an Islamic Republic, would similarly not countenance the establishment of a Republic of Kalaburagi.
'People had not elected leaders to emulate the Nizam, but to serve the public with humility and responsibility,' he cautioned, warning Mr. Priyank against projecting a feudal mindset within a democratic framework.
Former Minister B. Sriramulu also weighed in, defending Mr. Narayanaswamy's 'dog' remarks against Mr. Priyank by asserting that the comments reflected a local saying.
'Congress leaders verbally attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi with harsher words and comparisons every morning,' Mr. Sriramulu observed. 'They call him a murderer, a venomous snake, a merchant of death and many more. They immediately justify their remarks by stating that it was a reflection of their local saying or a proverb,' he said, advising Congress leaders not to take Mr. Narayanaswamy's remarks seriously.
N. Ravikumar, MLC, asked Mr. Priyank whether he thought that he was the sole Dalit leader and Mr. Narayanaswamy was not. He also blamed Mr. Priyank's for Mr. Narayanaswamy's 'confinement' and demanded his resignation.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday clarified that it has no plans to use Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh as party's campaign faces. The clarification came after a media report claimed that Col Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh, who led India's press briefings on Operation Sindoor, will be the faces of an ambitious women-centric campaign to be rolled out by the BJP on June 9, the completion of 11 years of the Modi government. 'This is fake news,' BJP IT department head Amit Malviya wrote on X. 'The BJP has no plans to use either Col Sofiya Qureshi or Wing Commander Vyomika Singh as campaign faces,' he asserted. Malviya further said that comments made by BJP Minority Morcha president Jamal Siddiqui in the media report have been misconstrued. Kharge slams Modi for using military ops in poll rhetoric
Bengaluru, Jun 1 (UNI) In remarks that could escalate political tensions, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of repeatedly politicising military operations and using national security for self-promotion during election campaigns, a charge that is expected to draw a sharp response from the BJP. Addressing reporters here, Kharge took direct aim at the Prime Minister's recent speeches invoking cross-border military action, warning that such rhetoric risks reducing the Army's work to a tool for electoral mobilisation. "I say this without any political bias – everyone must come together and focus on those who are threatening or intimidating our soldiers. But instead, we keep hearing: 'I did this, I achieved that, I alone can do this.' Issuing such self-congratulatory statements, especially about the armed forces, is not appropriate," Kharge said. He underscored that the nation owes its security to the sacrifices and professionalism of the Indian Army, not to any individual leader. "The entire country stands today because of our military. Whatever the Army does, it does for the nation, and we all support them," he noted. Referring to the Prime Minister's own past statements, Kharge said, "Modi himself had earlier declared that he would not interfere and had given full authority to the armed forces and their chiefs. If that is the case, then why does he keep referring to military action in his speeches? Why bring this up repeatedly in the middle of an election campaign?" Kharge warned that matters of national security should not be used for political mileage. "Using Army operations in election rhetoric for self-image or votes is simply not right. This is a matter of national dignity and security, not personal publicity," he added. While the Congress leader insisted he was speaking beyond party lines, political observers expect the BJP to strongly rebut the remarks. The party has in the past accused the Congress of undermining the morale of the armed forces whenever such comments surface. The BJP has often positioned PM Modi as a decisive leader on matters of defence and national security, particularly following the 2016 surgical strikes, the 2019 Balakot air strikes and Operation Sindoor after Pahalgam terror attack. Kharge's comments challenge that narrative head-on, questioning both the intent and tone of the Prime Minister's speeches. Political reactions from the BJP are awaited. UNI BDN SS

Bihar Dalit rape victim dies after being made to wait for hours in ambulance
PATNA: A nine-year-old Dalit girl from Bihar's Muzaffarpur, who was raped and brutally attacked on May 26, died at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday morning, amid allegations that she was left waiting in an ambulance for several hours before getting a bed. She was brought to PMCH from Muzaffarpur-based SKMCH in a critical condition on Saturday. Former Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan said the party would ensure justice for the victim's family. She also lashed out at state health minister Mangal Pandey over the deteriorating condition of premier hospitals like PMCH. 'I demand Mangal Pandey's resignation. He has no moral right to remain in office when the poor are being denied healthcare despite the state government's tall claims of improving infrastructure in government-run hospitals,' she said. Rajesh Rathod, media in-charge of Congress, said that the rape victim had to wait in ambulance for several hours in the premises of the PMCH. "Her family members reached the PMCH at 11 am on Saturday. It took the hospital administration more than four hours to arrange a bed for her,' he added. Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram slammed the state government for its insensitivity towards women, citing the rising incidents of sexual assault. 'The law-and-order machinery has completely collapsed in the state,' he said. Sushil Kumar, senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Muzaffarpur district, said that the accused, identified as Rohit Sahni has already been arrested. Muzaffarpur residents alleged that the accused Rohit Sahani had earlier committed the same offence with another 12-year-old girl at the village and attempted to kill her. However, she had survived in the incident. Meanwhile, the Muzaffarpur unit of the Congress staged a protest at Saraiyaganj Tower Chowk, condemning the incident and threatening to intensify their agitation. Party members alleged that three cases of rape have been reported in the district in recent days.
