Can Benn-Eubank Jr. live up to the hype? Fines and family drama highlight British middleweight bout

Can Benn-Eubank Jr. live up to the hype? Fines and family drama highlight British middleweight bout

LONDON (AP) — They've sold more tickets than their dads. Now, it's on Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn to deliver on what one promoter said could be the 'British Hagler-Hearns.'
They'll meet Saturday night in front of more than 65,000 fans at a sold-out Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a middleweight bout, more than 30 years after their fathers launched the family rivalry with two memorable slugfests.
For a fight with no belts at stake, Eubank Jr. and Benn have succeeded in generating plenty of interest.
The latest twist came Friday when Eubank Jr. weighed in half an ounce over the 160-pound limit. That means, reportedly per the fight contract, that he will pay a fine of $500,000 to Benn, who weighed 156.4 lbs.
Benn immediately posted a video and said 'show me the money.'
Their grudge match had been set for 2022 but was scrapped after Benn's voluntary urine test showed trace amounts of fertility drug Clomiphene, a banned substance that boosts testosterone levels while burning fat.
Benn then argued successfully that his consumption of eggs elevated his testosterone levels.
Cue the egg slap at their first media face-to-face. Eubank Jr. had pulled out an egg and smacked the right side of Benn's face. It was costly. The British Boxing Board of Control fined him 100,000 pounds ($130,000).
Eubank Jr.'s father later called his son's antics 'a disgrace.' Meanwhile, Nigel Benn has remained a close confidant by his son's side in the build-up.
Family 'pain' for Eubank Jr.
Eubank Jr. is arguably the more charismatic of the pair, and Thursday's final press conference provided an example.
The 35-year-old fighter responded to a verbal shot from Benn — 'Just focus on getting the weight off, fat boy' — by turning philosophical.
'The weight is painful. I'm in pain right now,' Eubank Jr. said. 'The question I ask myself is 'what is pain?''
Benn interjected with 'Oh, shut up, Chris.' But Eubank Jr. went on to discuss his brother's 2021 death and his strained relationship with his father.
'I have a 31-year-old brother, he is buried in the desert in Dubai, that's pain,' Eubank Jr. said. 'I have his son, Raheem. He asks 'why can't I see my daddy? Why doesn't he take me to school?' That's pain.
'My own father — a man I idolized for my entire life and he doesn't speak to me. We haven't spoken for years, and he thinks I'm a disgrace. These things are what pain is to me. And if I can deal with all of these trials and tribulations, then the weight cut and the rehydration clause, these are all things that are not an issue.'
The dads
In November 1990, Chris Eubank beat Nigel Benn after a ninth-round stoppage in Birmingham to take the WBO middleweight title. The rematch was three years later in front of 45,000 fans at Old Trafford — Manchester United's stadium. It didn't quite live up to the first meeting and ended in a split-decision draw. Both fighters retained their respective super-middleweight titles.
The sons
Neither Eubank Jr. (34-3, 25 KOs) or Benn (23-0, 14 KOs) have held a major world title.
The 35-year-old Eubank Jr. last fought in October, stopping Poland's Kamil Szeremeta in the seventh round in Saudi Arabia. In 2023, he twice fought former WBO light-middleweight champion Liam Smith — losing the first one and winning the rematch.
Benn has spent most of his career as a welterweight, but agreed to move up to middleweight. He has said his only request was an 18-foot ring, down from the standard 20 feet.
At 5-foot-11, Eubank Jr. has a three-inch height advantage.
Even though he's undefeated, the 28-year-old Benn has heard criticism about the quality of his opponents.
A packed stadium and worldwide audience will also be a step up for Benn, whose last two fights were in hotel ballrooms — Orlando and Las Vegas — while he cleared his name of the positive drug test.
The WBC in February 2023 cleared Benn of intentional doping, saying the boxer's consumption of eggs presented a 'reasonable explanation for the adverse finding.'
Benn hasn't fought in nearly 14 months since a unanimous decision over Peter Dobson in Las Vegas.
'No pressure, I live for this,' Benn said Thursday. 'All that PR is done. I'm excited to get in there and put my hands on him Saturday night.'
More to come?
It's boxing, so a rematch is always a possibility. There are also reports that the winner could be in line for a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
Rick Reeno, COO of the Saudi-backed Ring Magazine, made sure on Thursday that everyone knew who was in charge.
'Make no mistake about it. This is not a Matchroom event, this is not a Boxxer event. This is a Ring Magazine event. This is our identity — stacked, loaded cards,' he said.
How to watch
The undercard is set to start at 5 p.m. local time (noon ET). The ring walk for the main event should be around 9:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. ET).
It's available by pay-per-view in most countries on DAZN. It's also available on Sky Sports Box Office pay-per-view in the UK and Ireland.

49ers trade for Chiefs receiver Skyy Moore, AP source says

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a deal to acquire receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. A person familiar with the trade said the teams will swap sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2027 in the deal that sends Moore to San Francisco. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade can't be finalized until Moore passes a physical. Moore was drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 2022 but hasn't produced much in his first three seasons. He had 43 catches for 494 yards and one TD in 36 games. He didn't catch a single pass last season because of a a core muscle injury. Moore did catch a TD pass in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 38-35 win in the Super Bowl against Philadelphia following the 2022 season. Moore had an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a preseason game last Friday at Seattle. The 49ers have gone 227 consecutive regular-season games without a punt return touchdown for the second longest active drought in the NFL. The Niners were in dire need of healthy receivers. Brandon Aiyuk is working his way back from major knee surgery and isn't expected to be able to play until at least Week 6, while fellow starter Jauan Jennings has been out for most of training camp with a calf injury. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday on his radio show that Demarcus Robinson is facing a three-game suspension, pending appeal, after pleading no contest last month to a misdemeanor DUI charge. Rookie Jordan Watkins is out with a high ankle sprain and second-year pro Jacob Cowing is nursing a hamstring injury. Cowing hurt his hamstring the first day of training camp and returned to practice last week. Cowing tweaked the injury on Tuesday and missed practice Wednesday. ___ AP NFL:

USC is still trying to get itself together heading into Lincoln Riley's 4th season in charge

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lincoln Riley always speaks glowingly of the future at Southern California, with extraordinary recruiting classes and a lavish training complex on the way to lift the Trojans back to their customary perch atop college football. Sure, the future could be great. But Trojans fans really wish Riley had done something to make the present more attractive after two mediocre seasons under their high-priced coach. USC is not ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 for the first time since 2019, reflecting the college football world's skepticism about the state of Riley's project in its fourth year. It's still unclear whether Riley and defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn can translate USC's vaunted brand, bountiful resources and roster talent into wins. 'Seeing how our roster has evolved on all sides, especially defensively after the huge improvements that we made a year ago, the depth, the championship-caliber depth that started to be established across the board is something that we all have worked hard for,' Riley said. 'It's been a long journey to work towards that point, but it's pretty exciting to watch unfold right now.' Trojans fans wish Riley would do his unfolding a bit faster. Riley's first USC team won 11 of its first 12 games with Caleb Williams working wonders, but the high-priced coach is 15-13 since then. USC went 7-6 in its Big Ten debut last season, needing a late comeback to steal the Las Vegas Bowl from Texas A&M just to avoid posting the Trojans' third losing record since 2000. Maiava returns Quarterback Jayden Maiava is back after starting the final four games of last season. The UNLV transfer isn't on many lists as a star in the making, but he has the firm backing of Riley, a head coach with a resume including three Heisman-winning quarterbacks and Jalen Hurts, a second-place Heisman finisher who just won a Super Bowl. Waiting in the wings is Husan Longstreet, one of the nation's top prep quarterbacks last fall. Playmakers USC's lack of difference-makers at the offensive skill positions was glaring last season, but receivers Ja'Kobi Lane and Makai Lemon are back after an offseason of building trust with Maiava. Tailback U will have its usual selection of elite rushers, including juco transfer Waymond Jordan. But they're behind an offensive line that didn't look dominant even before projected starting guard DJ Wingfield was denied an eligibility waiver. Big hitter USC's most interesting defensive player is safety Kamari Ramsey, the UCLA transfer who starred last year. Lynn will rely heavily Ramsey's versatile playmaking to control the back of a defense with a much-improved line and question marks at linebacker. Clock is ticking Unless the team on the field profoundly collapses this season, Riley probably isn't in serious jeopardy. USC has indeed landed a stellar recruiting class arriving for 2026, and the lavish Bloom Football Performance Center opens next summer. What's more, the school itself appears to be in dire financial straits with a $200 million operating deficit — not exactly ideal conditions to buy out one of the fattest contracts in college sports. Still, Trojans fans are weary of waiting for Riley to end 15 largely mediocre years of post-Pete Carroll football. 'It's very apparent that USC is extremely serious about making this football program and returning it back to being one of the greats in college football,' Riley said. 'You can see that investment level really all the way across our program. The excitement that comes with that, the anticipation, the opportunity is real, and I think we all feel it.' The schedule After ex-coach Clay Helton brings Georgia Southern to the Coliseum on Sept. 6, things get difficult quickly. The Trojans host Michigan State on Sept. 20 and Michigan on Oct. 11. The annual meeting with Notre Dame follows on Oct. 18 in South Bend. The Trojans return to Oregon on Nov. 22.

Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo removed in 2nd inning vs. Nationals with stiff neck

WASHINGTON (AP) — New York Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo was removed in the second inning against Washington with a stiff neck on Wednesday night. There was no obvious play where Nimmo was hurt. He grounded into a double play to end the first inning and did not have a chance in the field. Starling Marte replaced Nimmo in left. Nimmo is batting .254 with 20 homers and 68 RBIs. He has been durable, playing in 122 of the Mets' 126 games through Wednesday. He has played no fewer than 151 games in each of the past three seasons. ___
