Emma Raducanu ‘proud' of pushing Aryna Sabalenka to limit in Cincinnati Open
Five weeks on from their memorable third-round match at Wimbledon, Raducanu showed her continued progress by making life even more difficult for the world No 1 and coming close to pulling off the best individual victory of her career. After three hours and nine minutes on court, Raducanu lost 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (5).
'She's world No 1 for a reason and I pushed her more than I did at Wimbledon so that's an improvement,' said Raducanu. 'And also, it was good to have this result on a hard court because it's very different to grass. I was always thinking that grass suits me a lot more and I still believe that so to have pushed her on a hard court like that, I'm pretty proud of it.
The 30th seed continued: 'I think starting the point is a big takeaway. I think she did that incredibly well in the big moments, she served and returned really well. Me too in certain moments of the match. To hold that level on starting the point in the match is a big thing to me.'
After falling down a set, Raducanu recovered brilliantly, serving well for large stretches of the match and then finding a way through an incredible 13-deuce service game at 3-4 in the final set. In the end, Sabalenka showed mental toughness by saving her best tennis for the most important moments of the match.
'You take the lessons from this,' said Raducanu, 22. 'I was able to play some good tennis for patches of the match, but I think it also dropped off for other patches of the match. So I think with work and going on the practice court, I can do it for longer and hold the level high for longer. But that being said, we had a three-hour match and I felt pretty good out there for the most part against Aryna who's achieved everything she has, so it's mostly positives.'
Raducanu's defeat also marks an end to her first tournament with her new coach Francisco Roig, a former member of Rafael Nadal's coaching team, who has been working with the Briton since last Tuesday. After Raducanu's comfortable first round win against Olga Danilovic, this was their first big match together. Roig was extremely vocal throughout with both encouragement and specific tactical advice.
'I think the first week went well,' said Raducanu. 'I think we practised well. I made some improvements and I think for certain moments, you could see some stuff we practised peek through. But given that it's only been a week, I think there's been improvements.'

August 12 - Spencer Torkelson smacked a go-ahead solo home run in the ninth inning and Chris Paddack and three relievers combined on a four-hitter to boost the visiting Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Monday. Greene doubled and scored on Dillon Dingler's RBI single two batters later to put the Tigers on top. Peguero took a no-decision, scattering one run and three hits in 1 2/3 innings with zero walks and three strikeouts. Left-hander Tyler Alexander kept Chicago steady after that, spacing two hits, one walk and five strikeouts in 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Detroit loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Alexander worked out of trouble by striking out Zach McKinstry. Colson Montgomery tied the game with a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning. The rookie blasted his 10th homer of the season, lining a pitch from Paddack into the stands in right field. Jake Burger's RBI hit in 10th lifts Rangers over D-backs
August 12 - Jake Burger's pinch-hit single off the left field wall in the 10th inning produced the walk-off run as the Texas Rangers roared from behind to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 on Monday in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers were down 5-0 and 6-1 before working their way back into the game. They tied it on Rowdy Tellez's solo home run off Andrew Hoffmann to open the ninth. In the 10th, Arizona reliever Andrew Saalfrank (0-1) intentionally walked Corey Seager before a fly ball moved automatic runner Sam Haggerty to third base. Burger then delivered on a 1-2 pitch. Phil Maton (2-3) pitched a perfect top of the 10th and was the beneficiary of Burger's hit. Texas, which pounded out 11 hits, ended a four-game losing skid by taking the opener of a three-game interleague series. The Diamondbacks had a three-game winning streak snapped. Cristian Javier returns and wins 2025 debut as Astros trim Red Sox
August 12 - Chas McCormick and Ramon Urias slugged two-run home runs in support of Cristian Javier, who enjoyed a triumphant return from Tommy John surgery in the Houston Astros' 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday. The Astros produced a surprising offensive showing against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet (13-5) and survived a late-inning rally from the Red Sox, who strung together five two-out hits in their four-run seventh to whittle down a five-run deficit. Houston erased a 2-0 deficit by posting a three-run third that featured an opposite-field RBI single from Carlos Correa and a two-run double by Christian Walker. The Astros extended that lead to 5-2 an inning later when McCormick blasted his first home run of the season to left-center field, driving home Urias, who opened that frame with a double. McCormick put an exclamation point to end the top of the fifth when he tracked a 408-foot blast from Anthony to the wall in center field for a dramatic final out of that inning.
