KSU urges collector to act on rising violence at Maharaja's College men's hostel

Time of India19-06-2025
Kochi: KSU has written to district collector NSK Umesh, seeking urgent intervention into alleged rising incidents of violence and ragging at Maharaja's College men's hostel. KSU has requested collector to check drug abuse within the hostel and its premises.
According to KSU, violence became routine in the hostel, with past complaints, FIRs and student protests failing to prompt action. "The culture of impunity that took root in the hostel poses a grave threat not only to the safety of individual students but to the integrity of the institution itself. We are concerned that if left unaddressed, this environment will continue to breed lawlessness, fear and irreparable harm to young lives," said a letter written by KSU Ernakulam assembly president Muhammad Ajmal K K.
In the letter, the student outfit cited Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1998, highlighting that many of the acts within the hostel constitute clear cases of ragging, including physical assault, intimidation and psychological abuse.
KSU has demanded a time-bound inquiry, installation of CCTV cameras, regular police inspections and strict implementation of anti-ragging guidelines. "We seek justice for victims and a safe, dignified space for all students," stated the letter.

BJP leader files ‘missing' complaint against Priyanka Gandhi over absence from Wayanad

Kozhikode: A day after a KSU leader filed a 'missing person' complaint against Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi, a BJP leader filed a similar complaint against Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi saying that she has been absent from the constituency for a long time. Mukundan Palliyara, state president of BJP's Scheduled Tribe Morcha, in a complaint to Wayanad district police chief, said Priyanka was not seen in the constituency for the last 'three' months. The complaint stated that the MP was not seen in the Chooralmala area, which was devastated by the landslide. "Wayanad is a district which has the largest tribal population in state and the MP's presence is not seen to address the various issues faced by the community," the complaint said, seeking police help in finding the missing MP. Priyanka last visited Wayanad constituency on June 13-15 and attended various programmes including the launch of development initiatives. A KSU leader filed a missing complaint with the police on Sunday, raising concerns over Gopi's absence from the constituency. He also criticised Gopi's alleged silence on the recent arrest of two Catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh. The missing complaint against Priyanka is seen as a political tit-for-tat by BJP. Union Minister Suresh Gopi counters critics with social media post

Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Monday (August 11, 2025) posted photos on his social media handle showing himself holding an official meeting, amid allegations from political opponents in Kerala that he has been absent from his constituency for some time. "Meeting with the senior officials of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas regarding the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a matter of discussion at Rajya Sabha today," Mr. Gopi posted on his X handle, along with some photographs of the meeting. However, there is no mention or reply in the social media post about the ongoing row surrounding him. Earlier in the day, Kerala's General Education Minister V. Sivankutty continued to take a dig at Mr. Gopi for his reported absence from Thrissur constituency for some time and sought to know whether he has resigned from the saffron party. He also alleged that Mr. Gopi 'may not be coming out of fear' of voters' list manipulation allegations. On Sunday, Kerala Students' Union (KSU) district president Gokul Guruvayoor filed a "missing" complaint with the police alleging that Mr. Gopi was "inaccessible" for the people of his constituency and district for some time. The KSU leader alleged that the Thrissur Lok Sabha MP has not been to the constituency for the last three months, and he had not uttered even a word on the recent arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh.

‘Suresh Gopi missing, probe needed'; KSU leader lodges complaint

THRISSUR: KSU district president Gokul Guruvayur has lodged a 'man-missing' complaint with the Thrissur City police, seeking a probe into the 'disappearance' of Union Minister and Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi. The police have not registered a case in that regard. In the complaint, the KSU leader alleged that Suresh Gopi went missing after the arrest of two Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh. He urged the police to 'probe the whereabouts of the MP and to find those behind his disappearance'. According to his social media handles, Suresh Gopi is currently in Manipur on official duty as the Union minister of state for tourism and petroleum and natural gas. Meanwhile, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar brushed aside complaints that Suresh Gopi has been missing from his constituency. 'Everyone knows that when an MP becomes a Union minister, he will have additional responsibilities,' Chandrasekhar said. Further, the BJP leader said he would soon meet the Malankara Orthodox Church's Thrissur Diocese Metropolitan Mar Yuhanon Meletius. The bishop had indirectly targeted Suresh Gopi in a recent Facebook post, expressing concern that 'the one we chose and sent to Delhi is missing'.
