Hilary Swank is offered more acting roles since turning 50
Oscar winner Hilary Swank has said since turning 50 she has "more offers now than I've ever had" for work.
The American star is not alone, as Demi Moore, 62, Cate Blanchett, 55, and Nicole Kidman, 57, are earning box office hits and critical praise for their central roles.
Swank has recently starred in the 2024 drama film Ordinary Angels and the 2023 crime thriller The Good Mother as well as the TV series Yellowjackets and Alaska Daily.
She has won two Academy Awards for Actress in a Leading Role during her career: 1999's Boys Don't Cry, about a transgender teenager who moves to Falls City, Nebraska; and 2004's Million Dollar Baby, chronicling the journey of an amateur boxer who wants to turn professional.
She is also known for the drama Freedom Writers, the romantic drama P.S. I Love You, the Amelia Earhart biopic film Amelia, and the thrillers The Hunt and Insomnia.
The Women's Health UK cover star told the publication: "Most people might be like, 'Aren't you worried that you're now 50 and there's not a lot of jobs?' I'm like, 'No, I have more offers now than I've ever had'. It's an exciting time."
She also said that Hollywood is "becoming more inclusive" after being "patriarchal" when she began her career.
"I was playing roles that were written by men from what a female point of view is, and it wasn't necessarily true... It's not that I don't like being feminine, I just don't like being told how to be feminine," Swank said.
The actress also said that she would advise her younger self to "make sure what is happening is what you want".
Swank gave birth to her two children, a son and a daughter, with her husband Philip Schneider in 2023 at the age of 48 after reportedly freezing her eggs.
Swank said: "I would have had kids earlier. I'm not saying I actively waited until 47. But that was a magical time in my life, when it all culminated. It was the right time for a myriad of reasons."
She also said that she is "a very different parent than I would've been", as she is "more patient" in middle age.
Swank said: "I'm really interested in their brains. I am fascinated about what makes them tick.
"And I have my career that's already established, so I'm not divided. I'm able to really sink in and be present with them and be a hands-on parent."
The full Hilary Swank interview is available in the May issue of Women's Health UK.

Inside Jeff Bezos sumptuous three-day wedding from which stars will be there to why the billionaire has banned gifts
THE private jets have landed, the celebrities are filling the grand hotels and billionaires are taking over the city. Yes, the wedding of the decade is finally here — and true to form for space-loving Advertisement 19 The wedding of Jeff Bezos and his bride Lauren Sanchez will be out of this world Credit: Getty 19 Celebrations have already been taking place on board Jeff's £370million superyacht Koru Credit: Splash 19 Guests will head to the Venetian island of San Giovanni Evangelista for a sumptuous banquet Credit: Alamy Tonight, approximately 200 of the world's wealthiest and most famous faces will gather at the 15th-century Madonna dell'Orto church in The next day Jeff, 61, and Lauren, 55, will finally say 'I do' at the open-air amphitheatre on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore — both most likely draped in Dolce & Gabbana haute couture. And that is just a slice of what is to come. Forget everything you know about vow exchanges, wedding breakfasts and DJ'd dancefloors, this super wedding, with an expected bill of around £35million, is going stratospheric. Advertisement READ MORE ON JEFF BEZOS Today may be the official start to proceedings, but celebrations have already been taking place 160 miles away, on board Jeff's £370million superyacht Koru, which is anchored off the The yacht was supposed to be a focal point for the three-day event in Venice, but thanks to heightened security measures and local protests, it is staying put in Croatia. According to insiders, there had to be last-minute changes to some wedding plans following the US bombing raid on Iran and the threat of the war in the Middle East escalating. Bezos, who is worth £165billion, and his billionaire friends are potential American targets, making his over-exposed yacht too much of a risk. Advertisement Most read in Celebrity Latest Foam party There have also been left-leaning protests bubbling away on the ground, with posters popping up saying 'No Space for Bezos' and 'If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax'. With that in mind, it was decided that arriving on the world's largest sailing yacht might not have helped the cause. LIVE: Katy Perry & Lauren Sanchez blast off into space with Blue Origin's all-female crew Instead, they flew in on private jet, but not before hosting a massive foam party on their boat. Frolicking in the soapy suds, it was clear that the Amazon and Prime founder and former Fox news journalist Lauren were starting as they meant to go on — with fun, fizz and a bit of extra froth. Advertisement High-profile guests including Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka have been pouring into the city of love. Other famous faces believed to be checking into one of Venice's most luxurious hotels include Kim Kardashian and her mum Kris Jenner, The five-star Aman Venice, where Jeff and Lauren will be staying and where suites cost as much as £10,000 a night, has been fully booked out for the occasion, as have several other high-end hotels. And they are not the only businesses profiting from the Bezos bonanza, with around 80 per cent of provisions for the wedding apparently being sourced locally. Advertisement Rosa Salva, Venice's oldest pastry maker, is certainly not against the couple choosing her city to tie the knot. She told reporters earlier this week: 'I don't see how an event with only 200 people can create disruptions. It's responsible tourism. 'It's prestigious that a couple like this, who can go anywhere in the world, are getting married in the city.' Mayor Luigi Brugnaro added: 'We are very proud. I don't know if I will have time, or if he will, to meet and shake hands, but it's an honour that they chose Venice. Advertisement 19 200 of the world's wealthiest and most famous faces will gather at the 15th-century Madonna dell'Orto church in Venice Credit: Alamy And it appears that Jeff and Lauren do want to honour the city. In their wedding invitation — which was leaked this week and looked like it had been designed on clip art with its illustrations of birds and butterflies — they told guests they do not want presents. Instead, they would be making donations on their behalf to 'safeguard the city's irreplaceable cultural heritage' and to 'restore the vital lagoon habitats'. Advertisement As for the lavish events to come, tonight is just an appetiser. With luxury wedding planners Lanza & Baucina at the helm — whose founders come from Italian royalty — it is no surprise they have access to some of the city's most exclusive sites. The firm also planned George and Amal Clooney's Venetian nuptials in 2014. The ceremony tomorrow promises to be a spectacular and sumptuous affair fit for the third richest man in the world. Advertisement Earlier this week, construction workers were seen building a white cover above the breathtaking amphitheatre at San Giorgio Maggiore, guaranteeing privacy from drones. Once Mr and Mrs Bezos have made things official there, the party will dine out in style, with the requisite fireworks launched to seal the deal. Closing the epic three-day event will be a grand ball on Saturday at the Arsenale, the city's ancient shipyard. The original plan was to end up at the city's majestic Scuola Grande della Misericordia building in the centre, but the site has been deemed 'logistically unfeasible' given the need for high security. Advertisement The Arsenale, which is practically unreachable to any would- be protesters, will see a performance by opera singer Matteo Bocelli, son of Andrea Bocelli. As for the dress, it is widely believed that previously married mum-of-three Lauren will plump for Dolce & Gabbana for the ceremony itself. Vanity project She is close friends with the sartorial duo, who even featured her son Nikko, 24, in a fashion show last year. She and Jeff were then spotted visiting their iconic store in Milan during March for an apparent dress fitting. Advertisement Nevertheless, multiple events call for multiple outfits and, according to insiders, designers Versace and Oscar de la Renta are also on the docket. The latter was responsible for Lauren's line of Blue Origin spacesuits that she and her all-female space-mates wore for their 11-minute rocket trip in May. Lauren had intended that adventure to empower women by gathering a gaggle of girls, including singer Katy Perry and TV anchor Gayle King, and launching into space on a flight funded by Jeff's space exploration firm. But the journey was slammed for being just a self-congratulatory vanity project, not least because Katy Perry took the chance to announce her latest tour's setlist while in zero gravity. Advertisement Needless to say, Lauren will this time be keen to strike that fine balance between ex- travagant and modest, proving that despite their love for rockets and superyachts, she and Jeff do have their feet firmly planted on the ground. Still, the couple have survived rockier terrain. After all, news of their relationship came out in 2019 while they were both still married to other people. 19 Where the wedding banquet will be held Credit: Alamy 19 The location of the lavish wedding, Venice Credit: The Mega Agency Advertisement Indeed, it was Lauren's then husband, Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell, who introduced the pair. Both Jeff and Lauren say their respective marriages had secretly ended before they got together. They both then divorced their spouses, with Jeff's ex-wife MacKenzie Scott — with whom he has four children — walking away with Amazon stock worth £36billion, making her one of the richest women in the world. Since getting together with Lauren — and proposing to her with a 30-carat ring worth a reported £3.6million in 2023 — Jeff has transformed from a so-called nerd to a buffed-up tech guy. Advertisement He now seems happier hobnobbing with celebrities than he is chairing board meetings. Lauren, for her part, has always lived a starry existence. Her mega hen do weekend in Paris in May, which cost around £500,000 and gathered besties including Kim Kardashian and Eva Longoria, was a lesson in camera-ready luxury. So, despite nerves surrounding security and an emphasis on discretion, it is only a matter of time before we see a gym-buffed Jeff and his designer-clad missus smiling broadly in their bridal best — either in the pages of Vanity Fair or Vogue. Brendan Gleeson does not regret calling Micheál Martin a 'moron' over the health service
BRENDAN GLEESON HAS said he had a reason to call Micheál Martin a 'moron' almost 20 years ago, but added he now prefers a more constructive approach. The Irish actor said it was the way he 'really felt at the time' after witnessing 'unacceptable' treatment at a hospital. Gleeson, who is now supporting a major fundraising effort for a hospice in north Dublin, said profit incentives in care for older people are 'counterproductive'. During an appearance on the Late Late Show in 2006, he criticised the state of the health service and, in particular, his experiences with loved ones at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. Martin, who was the Minister for Health from 2000 to 2004, had opened a unit at the hospital. Brendan Gleeson's healthcare rant on the Late Late is nearly 17 years old, has anything changed? (17th March 2006) — KM2 archive (@KillianM2) December 19, 2022 During the interview, Gleeson said: 'There were people trying to fight for life and cling on to hope beside people who were dead and this moron's name was on a plaque saying the oncology suite was opened by Micheál Martin, when he screwed the place from the time he went in until the time he left.' Asked about the comments today, Gleeson said it was the way he 'really felt at the time' and that he was 'raging' with Martin. Speaking to the PA news agency, he said: 'In fairness to Micheál Martin, I was raging with him because his name was on a plaque in a new unit and they were running coffins down the bottom of my mother-in-law's bed where she was dying – the systems were catastrophic.' The Oscar-nominated Banshees Of Inisherin star said he was 'glad' he highlighted the problems, but now thinks a constructive and compassionate approach is more appropriate. 'The vociferous nature of it was fine, but I did find afterwards it became a thing then where everybody is screaming, shouting and enraged and all this kind of stuff,' he said. 'I feel I had reason – and it was my younger self and I'm glad I did it – I think it needed to be drawn attention to, but how many times does it need to be drawn attention to and how constructive is that 19 years on?' Gleeson says he now has a glass-half-full approach, describing 'reactionary outragers' as 'boring'. Hospice campaign A source of that optimistic outlook is found at St Francis Hospice in Raheny, Dublin, where the actor says staff and volunteers treat people with compassion. Gleeson is supporting a major fundraising effort for the building of a 24 single-bed in-patient unit at the centre, where both his parents received care. The 70-year-old said the single-bed units at the hospice will be beneficial for families as he recalled it sometimes being difficult to speak to his father when he was passing away in the four-bed units. Brendan Gleeson is supporting St Francis Hospice's new 'buy a brick' campaign. Conor McCabe / MediaConsult Conor McCabe / MediaConsult / MediaConsult Reflecting on the tone of public debate, he said it is very difficult for people to maintain positivity in the world now because they are 'bombarded' with relentless bad news. 'The despair is beginning to become pervasive,' he said, adding: 'But here, there's a chance to show gratitude, compassion and build – brick by brick – something that is extraordinarily positive in the face of grief and bereavement.' Advertisement Gleeson said that over the years, Martin had 'learned from mistakes' and taken stances which he considered to be 'quite brave'. He said certain things have improved in the intervening 19 years but remained critical of the 'ideological issue' of running aspects of care through the private sector. He said: 'We're spending a fortune in this country on healthcare – but the systems are terrible.' Gleeson said he did not necessarily agree with an entirely state-run service either as it can lead to a lack of dynamism. He said: 'But I don't think that driving things for profit solves problems of compassion.' 'Proper discussion' He added: 'Let's have a proper discussion, not outage. We know what's wrong, let's have constructive ways – literally – of finding a way forward. 'I've had it with moaning about it and absolutely screaming about things.' Recently, RTÉ broadcast undercover reporting from two privately-run nursing homes which showed vulnerable people being left unsupervised, large amounts of residents congregated together being supervised by one member of staff, and requests for the use of toilets being unanswered for lengthy periods of time. In contrast with that footage, Gleeson said: 'The difference between what we saw in that documentary and what happens here is all you need to know. 'This costs a lot of money, fundraising, volunteer and local effort – but this is a happy place even with all the sadness that is involved in it. 'A nursing home is a place of diminishing horizons at its best – it feels like that going in. 'If you go into the right environment, it becomes a new chapter and there's a possibility where older people – and I'm not that far off it myself – where you can go and actually find kindred spirits.' Gleeson said he disagrees with the 'care for profit' approach: 'The two are counterproductive in my opinion.' While acknowledging that he did not have the answers for the challenge of running nursing homes, he said the approach should be about compassion, understanding, and appropriate availability of staff. Backing the €20 million 'buy a brick' campaign for the hospice, he said: 'I know how much of a game changer this new facility will be for the entire community of North Dublin.' The new unit will enable staff to care for an extra 3,000 patients over the next 25 years – and the fundraiser invites people to contribute to the build by buying a brick for between €25 and €250 and leaving their name or message on a virtual community support wall. He said the new unit would be a 'beacon of hope' and a 'centre of excellence', adding that the approach of the hospice is one of the best standards rather than cost-cutting. Last year, St Francis Hospice cared for 2,313 patients at its two facilities in Blanchardstown and Raheny – almost double that of a decade earlier. Construction at the new site is due to begin next year and will also include an underground car park and clinical support facilities, with a pedestrian bridge linking it to the existing building. Those who wish to contribute can visit St Francis Hospice's website .
