Cops dramatically swarmed the property in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday night after a neighbour heard yells and alerted police.
Police allegedly discovered the man's decapitated corpse beside the dead woman inside the Adrienne Crescent property in Mount Waverley.
A 34-year-old homeless man was then arrested shortly afterwards at Westall train station in the early hours of Tuesday - but he has not been charged.
The station is just 6km from the small property where the couple were found.
Detectives are now probing if the graffiti outside the home is linked to the horrific scene found inside.
The messy graffiti included derogatory and aggressive phrases like "U R Gay", "Enough is Enough", "Betrayal" and "Karma".
The seemingly threatening messages were sprayed on the walls in luminous yellow, green and black spray paint, as well as on the property's fence.
Detectives revealed the man in custody is being quizzed over the deaths.
They also said the man was known to the dead pair, only one of whom lived at the small property.
Athena was five months pregnant when she died and was in a relationship with Andrew before they were allegedly murdered.
The couple's next of kin have been informed and post mortems will be held on Wednesday.
Athena's aunt Patty Dilveridis told the Herald Sun her niece never thought she would be a mum.
'She was so looking forward to having a baby, because she was 39 [and] she never thought she could have one,' she said.
Meanwhile, her mum Petty, who was being looked after by Athena, was left "devastated".
Cops are still working to establish a link with the man in custody.
Detectives also said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the case at this stage.
They said a weapon was used in the alleged murder - but confirmed it was not a firearm.
The street has been cordoned off by police as homicide detectives continue their investigation.
The motive for the alleged killings remain unknown - but local media have reported the case may be drug-related.
Detective Inspector Dean Thomas from the Homicide Squad said police: "Police were called at about 9.20pm in relation to a welfare check at the address based on some yelling that was heard from the property.
"A second call was then made that suggested it was perhaps more urgent than the first call and police arrived minutes later, and obviously they found the male and female inside the premises deceased."
He added: "The person that we took into custody was in the company of two large dogs, I think that would look fairly obvious to people who may have been in the area."
A spokesperson for Victoria Police said: "Police are aware of graffiti on the property in Mount Waverley where the bodies of two people were located last night.
"Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation."

Government-run grocery store in Kansas City forced to close

A city-run grocery store in Kansas City has been forced to close after rampant shoplifting and years of empty shelves. The Sun Fresh Market abruptly shut its doors on Monday, August 12, with a handwritten sign taped to the entrance, reading: 'Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are no longer able to serve residents at this time.' Emmet Pierson Jr., the group's CEO, has repeatedly said that relentless shoplifting and crime in the neighborhood have driven away customers. Just last month, images at the grocery store shared online revealed mostly bare shelves and coolers as well as empty meat, produce and deli departments. Shoppers said the store once held the fresh items they needed, but that it has been mostly empty for the last three months - and that some of the products available appear to be expired. 'The milk, I am scared to buy some,' shopper Michaelle Randolph told KMBC at the time. 'Even the dates, they may have a few days over. I don't want to buy that.' 'It's a rancid odor. I think something is dead or something's gone bad,' added shopper Jon Murphy. The store opened in 2018 in Kansas City as part of a project to bring life back into the city's embattled east side, which did not have a grocery store before. Meanwhile, residents of the area told The Washington Post they are scared to go to the store because of the rampant drug dealing and vagrancy both inside and outside the store. Surveillance cameras inside the store have caught several concerning incidents at the shopping center, including a [expletive] woman walking through the store, a person urinating and a couple fornicating on the lawn of the library in broad daylight. According to local media, the store has received $28,997,400 in taxpayer money through bonds, loans, ordinances and subsidies. But the closure is a major problem for local residents, who have long struggled with limited access to affordable groceries. The next closest options, including Happy Food Center, Family Market, Aldi, and Save A Lot, are all at least a mile away. Ryan Beal, who worked at Sun Fresh, told KCTV the loss will hit the community hard. Longtime customer Jill Beuford said the store's closure will make daily life far more difficult for many residents. 'I really hate to see really leave the area because so many people, they live around here,' she told the outlet. 'Walking distance where they can come to a store that's close to the community to where they can get to.'

Police release image of car they want to trace after man is shot dead near petrol station

Police have released an image of a car they want to trace after a man was shot dead near a petrol station in West Yorkshire. Officers received a report at 9:43pm on Tuesday that a man had been seriously injured after a shot was fired from a car on Doncaster Road near the BP petrol station in Wakefield. The victim was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries. Police said he is understood to be a 50-year-old man who was living in the local area. A murder investigation has been launched and the victim's immediate family are being supported by specially-trained officers. The force said it believes the vehicle used in the offence was "on false plates" and was stolen in a burglary in Castleford, West Yorkshire, on 3 August. Police believe the car is a blue/grey-coloured Toyota RAV4 with a grey trim, displaying cloned plates FV53 FXT. The vehicle is described as being "distinctive due to having bull lights on the roof above the windshield". Anyone who may have seen the car following the suspected burglary or around the time of the shooting has been asked to contact the force. Police said the car may now have different number plates. Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, of West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major inquiry team, said: "A man has lost his life, and it is an absolute priority for us to understand the circumstances of what has taken place and identify anyone who has had any involvement in this incident." He added: "Motorists who were in the Doncaster Road area last night who have dashcams fitted are also asked to check whether they have captured any footage of this vehicle. "The driver was driving in the direction of Wakefield before they have turned around near the BP petrol station immediately prior to the shooting and then driven off in the direction they came from." DCI Entwistle said the force is "dedicating significant resources" to the investigation and there is an increased police presence in the area to "provide reassurance to the community".

New York man charged with cyberstalking a family member of slain UnitedHealthcare CEO

A New York man has been charged with cyberstalking a family member of slain UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, allegedly leaving threatening voicemails that expressed glee about the killing within hours of the fatal shooting, federal prosecutors said Wednesday. Shane Daley, 40, is accused of placing multiple calls to Thompson's family member after the shooting, justifying the killing and saying that the person deserved to die in a similar manner, according to a criminal complaint. Daley, of Galway, New York, a small town north of Albany, was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon. Information on whether Daley had an attorney was not immediately available in online federal court records. In a statement, Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone said that 'Brian Thompson was gunned down in midtown Manhattan. Daley, as alleged, gleefully welcomed this tragedy and did all that he could to increase the Thompson family's pain and suffering." Thompson was fatally shot outside a hotel in New York City in December by a man who prosecutors said was angered over what he viewed as corporate greed. The suspect, Luigi Mangione, has pleaded not guilty.
