$30 million WNBA practice facility included in Capital Improvements Budget

Yahoo07-07-2025
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Metro Council unanimously approved the Capital Improvements Budget from fiscal year 2025-2026 through fiscal year 2030-2031, and it sets aside $30 million for a WNBA practice facility.

In a note on the allocation, Metro Council explains that the funding is meant to attract professional women's basketball to Music City. For fiscal year 2026, there's been a funding request of $30,000.
According to Metro, the Capital Improvements Budget is 'a list of recommended capital improvements to the Mayor,' meaning that it acts more like a wishlist for city leaders than a steadfast budget. All infrastructure projects still require additional approval from departments like the Metro Planning Commission.

Former Tennessee governor and owner of the Nashville Predators Bill Haslam and a group of investors have worked to bring a professional women's team to Nashville for years. They submitted a bid in January to create the team, which could be dubbed the 'Tennessee Summit' to honor legendary Tennessee Volunteers Women's Basketball Coach Pat Summitt.

When the submission was announced, Haslam and other ownership partners said they wanted to develop 'a world-class practice facility' for the WNBA team that would also serve as a hub for youth basketball in the Nashville area.

'Having a WNBA team in Nashville will definitely attract more residents more businesses to Nashville,' Metro Councilmember Jennifer Gamble said.
Gamble added that she supports the WNBA coming to Nashville, believing the team would continue to positively transform the city.

The Engine: Alyssa Thomas driving new-look Phoenix Mercury near the top of WNBA standings

PHOENIX (AP) — A marketing panel with Castrol landed Alyssa Thomas on a NASCAR hood. While attending the panel at the WNBA All-Star game last month, Thomas was approached by the motor oil company about putting her image on a NASCAR for an upcoming race. The Phoenix Mercury star loved the idea and helped in the design process, leading to her face making a 168-lap trip around Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the hood of RFK Racing's No. 60 Castrol Ford, driven by Ryan Preece. 'It was a fitting pairing being that my nickname is The Engine,' Thomas said. 'Not too many people can say their face is on a car, let alone in a race, so it was a really cool experience.' The Mercury had a lot of unknowns heading into the 2025 season after Diana Taurasi retired and Brittney Griner signed with the Atlanta Dream. Thomas has been the driving force behind the Mercury's rise. Fitting in perfectly in first-year coach Nate Tibbets' pace-and-space style, Thomas has been stuffing stat sheets while the Mercury have racked up wins. Entering Wednesday's games, Phoenix was fourth in the WNBA standings at 21-13 after finishing 19-21 a year ago. 'She's the ultimate winner, she's the ultimate competitor,' Tibbetts said. 'She wants to win at everything.' Thomas was the three-time ACC player of the year at Maryland and an All-American her senior season before arriving in Connecticut in a draft-day trade with the New York Liberty in 2014. The 6-foot-2 forward spent her first 11 WNBA seasons with the Sun, twice leading them to the WNBA Finals while earning five All-Star nods. She's also made the all-WNBA team three times and the all-defensive team five times. Thomas arrived in the desert via an offseason sign-and-trade deal as a key part of the Mercury's rebuilding, which includes fellow newcomer Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper, Phoenix's leading scorer a year ago. 'It was a decision that I made,' Thomas said. 'In speaking with Nate and Nick (U'ren), I just felt it was a perfect fit for me and my game, and off the court as well.' Thomas has thrived. Already the WNBA's leader in triple-doubles, she has added five more with the Mercury, including a WNBA-record three straight this month. Thomas has 20 of the 52 triple-doubles in WNBA history and her four this month match the most of any other WNBA player's career. Thomas was named an All-Star for the sixth time in her first season with the Mercury and has become an MVP contender with some of the best numbers of her career. She's third in the WNBA with 8.6 rebounds per game and second on the Mercury at 16.1 points while shooting a career-high 54.3% from the floor. Thomas' biggest impact in Tibbetts' offense may be her playmaking. Despite having the size of an interior player, she's used her vision and court awareness to become the WNBA's most prolific distributing forward. Thomas set the WNBA single-season record for assists with 316 in 2023 and is seventh on the league's all-time assists list — the only forward in the top 10. While in Phoenix, she's nearly doubled her career assist average with a league-leading 9.0 this season — over five per game more than the next closest player. 'There's just so much space and I feel like it's a perfect fit for me,' Thomas said. 'It's been a long time since I've played with this many shooters.' The Engine has been revving all season and is taking the Mercury with her. ___ AP WNBA:

Fever star Sophie Cunningham hit with third WNBA fine after Paige Bueckers comment on her podcast

It's "third time's the charm" for Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham, as she revealed the WNBA fined her again for criticizing officiating on her podcast. Cunningham, who was ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after tearing her MCL in Sunday's game against the Connecticut Sun, told her "Show Me Something" co-host, reality star and Complex journalist West Wilson, that she got fined for comments regarding Dallas Wings star guard Paige Bueckers. "I love Paige to death, don't get me wrong," Cunningham said in her podcast episode from Aug. 13. "I think she's a hell of a player and would love to play with her one day, but those refs were giving her every frickin' whistle last night. Like you literally couldn't touch her. That's just so annoying to me." The WNBA fined Cunningham an undisclosed amount. "I'm officially 3-for-3 on being fined by the WNBA," Cunningham said in the most recent podcast episode. "For this? For the pod?" Wilson questioned. "They didn't like my comment on Paige Bueckers…I didn't even say anything bad," Cunningham responded. Cunningham was first hit with a fine worth $500 from the league for posting a TikTok where she captioned it "some officials" with lip-synced words from Sabrina Carpenter's hit song, "Manchild," which were, "Stupid. Or is it slow? Maybe it's useless." Then, after comments about officiating in the podcast's debut episode, Cunningham was slapped with a $1,500 fine. "If I was a ref, I know I would mess up all the time. Like, I'm not saying that your job is easy, but when it is a simple call right in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing? What are you doing?" Cunningham began in the debut episode. "They're just so inconsistent, like that's one thing. If you're on the other team, and you're going to be fouling the s--- out of me, cool. But let me do it to you… I think players across the league, and new fans across the country are like, 'What is going on with the refs?' And I'm like, 'I don't know.' And you fining me $500 is not going to do s---." Cunningham was in the midst of her first season with the Fever. Her popularity skyrocketed early this season in a game against the Sun where she protected Clark after the superstar guard was poked in the eye. Cunningham was ejected from the game for a scuffle underneath the Sun's hoop, and from there, her social media presence has grown exponentially. Cunningham was playing on a one-year, $100,000 contract with the Fever, rendering her a free agent at the end of this season. She finished the season averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game over 30 contests (13 starts).
