Raducanu through in Cincinnati Open after straight sets win

Roig may not have been overly impressed when Raducanu was broken to love in the first game, but the 2021 US Open champion responded well.
After four breaks of serve between the pair in the opening six games, Raducanu came from 30-0 down to grab another for 5-3.
She had won seven points in a row to bring up three set points and took the first with an ace.
In the second, Raducanu gave her Serbian opponent nothing for free, drawing out errors and eventually earning a break for 3-2.
She did not drop another game, wrapping up a fine victory in an hour and 20 minutes.

'I'm really building some momentum. I'm really happy with how I've stayed pretty consistent over the last few months,' said Raducanu, as quoted by BBC Sport.
'I still feel like there's a long way to go but just working hard behind the scenes, putting a lot of hours in and hoping I can trust in that.'
The 22-year-old will face world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the third round, after the Belarusian repelled an early challenge from Marketa Vondrousova en route to a 7-5 6-1 win.
Earlier, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek eased through with a 6-1 6-4 victory over Anastasia Potapova.
Australian Open champion Madison Keys saved two match points before beating Eva Lys 1-6 6-3 7-6 (1).
In the ATP draw Jannik Sinner, playing his first match since claiming a maiden Wimbledon title, dismantled Daniel Elahi Galan 6-1 6-1.

Alejandro Tabilo replaces Grigor Dimitrov (pectoral) in U.S. Open draw

August 12 - Grigor Dimitrov withdrew from the U.S. Open on Tuesday as he continues to recover from a chest injury. The 34-year-old Bulgarian held a two-set lead over World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in Wimbledon's Round of 16 when he was forced to retire with a pectoral muscle injury on July 7. Dimitrov has won nine singles titles on the ATP Tour but has never won a Grand Slam tournament. He has reached the semifinals at Wimbledon (2014), the Australian Open (2017) and the U.S. Open (2019) and the quarterfinals at the French Open (2024). This will be the sixth straight major in which he has either withdrawn or retired due to injury: Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2024, and the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and now U.S. Open in 2025. Dimitrov was replaced in the main draw by Chile's Alejandro Tabilo, 28. Tabilo ranks No. 106 in the world and is a two-time winner on the ATP Tour. He reached the second round in 2022 for his best finish at the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open draw is announced on Aug. 21. The tournament runs from Aug. 24 through Sept. 7 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. --Field Level Media

Emma Little-Pengelly defends taxpayer-paid trip to attend Wimbledon royal box

The deputy First Minister has said she was representing Northern Ireland when she attended Wimbledon last month. It was reported that almost £1,000 in public funds was spent on flights and accommodation for Emma Little-Pengelly and her husband, Education Authority chief executive Richard Pengelly, to attend the tournament. Advertisement The deputy First Minister told reporters on Tuesday that she attends many events of significance throughout the year. Asked about the matter following a meeting with British finance minister Rachel Reeves, she said: 'You will see that throughout the week, throughout every month, we have many different roles. 'Part of that is advocacy – that's what we're doing today in terms of emphasising to the Chancellor the needs of the people of Northern Ireland and to ask for that support for that economic growth. 'But there's also a representative role. I count it as a huge privilege to be in this role. Advertisement 'And of course, if anybody follows my social media, you will see that I am out and about on a weekly basis, representing and attending hundreds of events – most of them local community events. 'But of course, those national events and events of sport and significance as well throughout the year.' She added: 'I count it a huge honour to have been invited as deputy First Minister to attend the Royal Box at Wimbledon at the invitation of the chair of the club. 'The organisers invite a mix of political, Government, investors, business along with the world of sport and entertainment, and of course royalty, as part of the official aspect of the tournament in the Royal Box. 'It is hugely positive that Northern Ireland is invited to be represented at this significant UK British national sporting event, of huge global impact. Emma Raducanu most confident about US Open chances since 2021 slam win

Emma Raducanu said she will return to New York feeling calmer and more confident about herself and her prospects at the US Open than she has since she won the title there four years ago. She put together a brilliant performance against Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of the Cincinnati Open on Monday, narrowly losing 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (5) after three hours and nine minutes. Her impressive level was a reflection of the significant progress she has made in a positive summer on the North American hard courts. 'This year is my first year on tour playing most of the calendar,' she said. 'I had a tough start to the year and it was very difficult to change that. But in the last few months I've been building and the level has been increasing. The players I'm losing to, they're all top players so that gives me confidence.' The confidence Raducanu is competing with marks a significant contrast to her inconsistent presence on tour last year due to injuries and training blocks scheduled during the season. The 22-year-old did not compete for four weeks in the lead-up to the US Open last year, where she lost in the first round to Sofia Kenin. 'Last year I didn't play these tournaments, I went home and and came back and it was a really difficult time in New York,' she said. 'Since I won the tournament, it's not been easy for me there. But this year I feel different, I'm a lot calmer behind the court. 'On the court, I take more confidence in the big moments. I've been playing those big points pretty well for the most part so I'm looking forward to having some time to practise, improve and then get ready to play there.' Zheng Qinwen and Paula Badosa have already withdrawn from the tournament due to injury, meaning Raducanu's live ranking of No 34 would be enough for a seeding. However, numerous players could still overtake her at the Cincinnati Open this week. Either way, her positive progress and form mean that few players would be keen to face her early in New York.
