The New York Islanders have officially signed their top draft pick, Matthew Schaefer , to a three-year entry-level contract. The announcement came Monday, just as the young defenseman threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Mets game against the Cleveland Guardians Schaefer, who turns 18 next month, is eager to make his NHL debut this season."Feels amazing," Schaefer said at Citi Field. "It's something I've dreamed of my whole life. I know there's a lot of hard work ahead, but I think I'm ready."While the contract is a significant step, it doesn't guarantee Schaefer a roster spot with the Islanders this season. The team could choose to send him back to the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League for further development.Another possibility is that he suits up for Canada at the World Junior Championships in December and January - a tournament he was forced to leave last year after suffering a broken collarbone.Recently, Schaefer returned to action at Canada's World Junior Summer Showcase, marking his first significant on-ice action since the injury."I think that was massive for me to get those games in and those reps because I hadn't played in quite some time," he said. The Islanders are expected to closely evaluate Schaefer during training camp. His maturity, skillset, and determination could make a strong case for a spot on the NHL roster - but his development path remains open, with both junior and international options on the table.

The Smith Entertainment Group-owned team has requested the U.S. District Court to resolve the matter, presenting "months" of ongoing uncertainty due to the current dispute. Utah Mammoth resorts to courts as branding standoff with Mammoth Hockey escalates Utah's newest NHL team, the Utah Mammoth, is advancing to the next stage of its team development saga—not on the playing field, but inside the courtroom. The league has filed a complaint against Mammoth Hockey LLC, a business that manufactures premium hockey bags, following the latter's assertion that the naming of the NHL team "Mammoth" infringes its trademark rights. As per the court records, Mammoth Hockey initially favored the use of the name by the NHL team as part of the branding exercise through fans in 2024 and 2025. A June 2024 Facebook post, filed in the lawsuit, indicated that Mammoth Hockey was flagging the "Mammoth" choice using a thumbs-up emoji and statement. Mammoth Hockey went so far as to contact Chris Armstrong, president of the Utah Mammoth, in April 2025 to discuss a potential cooperation. NHL team asks court to clarify in growing trademark dispute The Utah Mammoth is now requesting the court to resolve the disagreement under the U.S. Declaratory Judgment Act based on the bag company's unclear threats of a lawsuit as a continued and unacceptable source of uncertainty.
