JPJ puts the brakes on illegal Singaporean e-hailing rides with four vehicle seizures

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 15 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has detained and seized four e-hailing vehicles registered in Singapore driven by citizens of the republic for carrying passengers without a valid permit through the Special Op for Foreign Vehicle E-Hailing around the city since August 9. JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the vehicles involved, namely a Toyota Alphard, Toyota Vellfire, Toyota Hiace and Honda Spada, each driven by a citizen of the republic, were detected carrying passengers from Singapore and other countries entering Malaysia via the Singapore route for tourism purposes. 'The results of the inspection found that the vehicles involved did not have a valid operator's license, were not registered as public service vehicles and did not have Malaysian road tax,' he said at a press conference at JPJ Taman Daya here, last night. According to him, all the vehicles were detained and seized under Section 80 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (APAD 2010) and are being investigated under Section 16(1) of the same act for operating public service vehicles without a valid operator's license. 'There will be no more compromises for any illegal e-hailing vehicles operating in Malaysia. We will take this action to court for the process of confiscating the vehicle,' he said. Also present were JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan and Johor JPJ director Azmil Zainal Adnan. Aedy said initial investigations found that the drivers involved were promoting their services via social media, WhatsApp and Telegram applications, as well as stickers on vehicles, with travel charges much higher than the permitted rates. He gave an example of Singapore-Johor Bahru travel charges reaching S$180 (RM591) per person for one trip, while trips to Ipoh were recorded at up to S$1,200 (RM3,946) for one trip. 'This operation is being carried out continuously to combat irresponsible parties from continuing to take advantage, besides ensuring the safety of passengers and the integrity of the country's transport system is maintained,' he said, adding that the same operation will be expanded to other states. The public who have information about this activity are urged to channel it through the MyJPJ e-Aduan application or email to [email protected]. — Bernama

JPJ seizes four Singapore-registered vehicles for illegal e-hailing in Johor

Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli (right) and senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan inspecting a seized Singapore-registered vehicle during a press conference on Aug 14, 2025. JOHOR BARU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has seized four Singapore-registered vehicles after their drivers were found operating e-hailing services illegally in Malaysia. JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that the vehicles, including luxury multipurpose vehicles and a van, were driven by Singaporeans in their 30s and 40s. "The drivers were ferrying tourists from Singapore and other nationalities into Johor during ongoing operations in Johor Baru starting Aug 9," he said. He noted that the drivers lacked permits to operate e-hailing services in Malaysia and did not possess Malaysian road tax or public service vehicle registration. The drivers typically advertised their services on social media platforms and messaging apps, charging up to S$180 (RM591) per head for a trip to Johor Baru. The fare for a trip to Legoland Malaysia was S$200 (RM657), and S$1,200 (RM3,946) for a trip to Ipoh. "These operators have no approval from the Malaysian government, Land Public Transport Agency (Apad), or JPJ to operate here," Aedy Fadly explained, adding that enforcement aims to protect passenger safety. He emphasized that in the event of an accident in Malaysia, there could be serious consequences for passengers, drivers, and even bilateral relations. The seizures were conducted under Section 80 of the Apad Act 2010 and are being investigated under Section 16(1) of the same Act for operating a service vehicle without a valid permit in Malaysia. This was the first operation conducted by JPJ, with more to follow at different hotspots identified by the department. When asked if the crackdown was in response to Singapore's recent enforcement against Malaysian e-hailing drivers, Aedy Fadly clarified, "That is the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) duty. This is carried out by JPJ with a different modus operandi, not as a reaction to LTA's operations." Recently, the LTA stated that 19 drivers were caught offering illegal ride-hailing services within Singapore and across the border on Aug 5. They were apprehended after a combined operation with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority targeting such activities at a land checkpoint and through LTA patrols at Gardens by the Bay and Changi Airport.

Tawau Maritime Zone Director Captain (Maritime) Ariffin Ghazali said it took place in the waters off Wallace Bay, Sebatik Island, on Wednesday night. 'The vessel was first detected 2.1 nautical miles northwest of the Sungai Tongkang estuary during Ops Pluto Timur, Ops Sejahtera and Ops Tiris around 8.20pm,' he said, Thursday. Ariffin said preliminary checks revealed that the vessel was operated by three local men, aged between 40 and 66, serving as skipper and crew members. A check on the documentation showed the skipper had failed to report a change of crew, as one of the individuals was not listed in the crew register stated on the vessel's operating licence. 'The vessel and its skipper were brought to the Tawau Maritime Zone Jetty for investigation under the the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 (MSO 1952) for breaching the conditions of a valid licence,' he said. The palm fruit was not seized as it had a valid licence certified by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). The case has been referred to the Marine Department for compound action, as all crew members must hold competency certificates to operate the vessel safely. Ariffin reminded vessel owners and operators to adhere to the conditions of their valid licence, stressing that no compromise would be made regarding such violations. 'The maritime community must remain vigilant and ensure that all licensing conditions are met, failing which stern action will be taken against them,' he said. He added that the MMEA will continue to strengthen enforcement within Malaysian maritime zones, particularly in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone), to combat unlawful activities. Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the Tawau Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 089-752116 or the emergency line 999 for immediate action. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
