Ontario murder sparks fear in B.C. due to extortion attempts
The 51-year-old's family believes his murder is tied to an extortion call he got in 2023.
'They were cussing at him and when they were cussing at him they told him that they either want $500,000 or they will kill him,' Gurlin Dhadda, Harjeet's daughter, told Global News.
'He said he won't give them the money.'
Dhadda reported the incident to the police.

Dhadda's killing is being felt in B.C., where South Asian business owners have been targeted with similar threats.

He told Global News he has faced more than 25 extortion attempts, including one last year.
Arora said at that time that he'd been receiving threats since last summer and that during one phone call, the extortionist told him that police wouldn't do anything, knowing an officer was in the room with him.
He is now worried that the escalation from threats to killing someone will push more victims to pay up, which will only lead to more extortion attempts.
'I'm scared to say this openly but I fear it's going to happen to me, or everyone again, and it's going to happen to new people,' Arora said.
The RCMP launched a national task force last year to combat extortion, but community members say they are still waiting for results.
'We don't know what they're doing right now,' Satish Kumar, president of the Vedic Hindu Cultural Society said.
'They say they're working on that, but there's new things coming up again over here… they should take strong action. The laws should be changed.'
Meanwhile, in Ontario, no arrests have been made in Dhadda's death or his extortion case.

Investigators believe the same group was connected to the robbery of a liquor store just before 11 p.m., in the 500 block of 11 Avenue southwest, where more than $200 worth of liquor was stolen. Story continues below advertisement Police said an 11-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the robbery of the bus driver and released into the custody of his parents. Those under the age of 12 cannot be charged under the Criminal Code of Canada. A 14-year-old girl was charged with one count of shoplifting and three counts of failure to comply with a release order. Charges are also pending against a 16-year-old girl in connection with the liquor store theft. The youths cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

NYC shooter purchased rifle from Las Vegas casino supervisor, police say
A man who killed four people at a Manhattan office building bought the rifle he used in the attack and the car he drove across country from his supervisor at a Las Vegas casino, authorities said Wednesday. Shane Tamura, 27, fatally shot three people in the lobby of the building that houses the National Football League's headquarters on Monday before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor and killing someone else before ending his own life, according to police. In a note found on his body, he claimed to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known at CTE, and accused the NFL of hiding the dangers of brain injures linked to contact sports. Tamura's supervisor at the Horseshoe Las Vegas legally bought the AR-15-style rifle he sold to Tamura for $1,400, the New York Police Department said Wednesday. On Tuesday, police mistakenly said the supervisor had supplied only parts of the rifle used in the attack, including the weapon's lower receiver. Tamura, who played high school football but never played in the NFL, worked in the surveillance department at the casino. During a search of Tamura's studio apartment in Las Vegas, investigators found psychiatric medication and a suicide note in which he said he felt his parents were disappointed in him and apologized to his mother, police said. Investigators also found anti-epileptic and anti-inflammatory medications, a tripod, a single rifle round, a box for the revolver found in Tamura's car in New York, and about 100 9mm rounds for the revolver. Virginia councillor set on fire after attacker douses him in gasoline
A council member in Virginia was doused in gasoline and set on fire Wednesday after a man forced his way into the office of the magazine where he worked. Lee Vogler, a long-serving city councillor in Danville, Va., had a 19-litre bucket of gasoline poured on him in the office of Showcase Magazine before the suspect set him ablaze, police confirmed. Andrew Brooks, the publisher and owner of the magazine, recounted the incident in a Facebook post Wednesday morning. 'Lee attempted to flee, ran to the front of the building,' Brooks said in the video. 'The individual followed him and set him on fire.' 'Please keep our colleague and our brother in your prayers,' the vice-mayor of Danville, James Buckner, said in an interview with ABC13. According to the Danville city council website, Vogler has served as a councillor since 2012, while also working as the managing partner for Andrew Brooks Media Group.
