Georgia Power working to reduce number, length of outages
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Whether it's a brief shower or a severe storm, Georgia Power said they are investing in their infrastructure by upgrading their energy grid for their 2.7 million customers. Georgia Power spokesperson Matthew Kent said they're doing this through smart grid technology. The company hopes to reduce outages when severe weather moves in. 'The technology can remotely restore power in the event that a line is down if there's an available way to reroute that power,' Kent said. 'But also at your home, smart meters and other smart technology on the lines, we're using all of that together to make sure that we can make your power outage times as minimal as possible after a storm,' Kent said. 'The main goal is to minimize any disruption. We know how difficult it is to be without power.' In 2023, the company reported customers were seeing up to 50% improvement. According to Kent, Hurricane Helene last year gave the company an opportunity to upgrade damaged technology. 'We had something like 11,000 poles, 1,000 miles of wire down and 3,000 transmitters. It was a lot of work to restore that,' Kent said. The Public Service Commission is voting this month on whether or not to freeze the base rate for three years. Your rate is dependent on the plan you have. Georgia Power sent WSAV the following statement on the rate freeze: 'At Georgia Power, customers are at the center of everything we do. As costs around the country rise, Georgia Power remains committed to providing our customers with clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy. We are well-positioned to balance mutual benefits that are available as a result of the extraordinary economic growth taking place in our state. This stipulated agreement helps balance the affordability needs of our customers while ensuring Georgia Power remains equipped to continue its support of our state's incredible growth – which is good for all of our stakeholders. We're always working to keep energy reliable and affordable for customers, and this stipulated agreement means no base rate increases for three years – that's great news for every customer. Reaching this agreement is just the start of an open and transparent process, leading up to a vote by the Georgia PSC, which will include opportunities for comment and input from intervenors and the public.' The Hispanic Chamber said it's their mission to provide a voice for the local Savannah businesses. They also don't only serve the Hispanic community, but also the non-Hispanic community by bridging the gap between them. 'The Hispanic Chamber is basically, people who don't know anything about Hispanics and people who know about Hispanics or are Hispanic and bringing them together,' Hispanic Chamber President Alfonso Ribot said. Ribot said that the diverse community is what the Savannah area needs, and the Hispanic businesses have something unique that everyone can enjoy. 'I know we're talking about some of the things that are happening out there in which businesses are closing, but one of the things that Hispanic businesses are doing is food,' Ribot said. 'Our culture, our way of treating people is appealing not just to Hispanics.' Ribot said Hispanic business owners are more prone to stick to the business because it's like a family and that business needs to be promoted. 'If you are non-Hispanic, Hispanic and you are able lease patronize Hispanic businesses and anyone that has that little sign on the door that says Hispanic Chamber of Commerce member, come in you're going to love it,' Ribot said. (Xinhua/Wang Peng) The four-day event has attracted over 1,100 domestic and international guests, featuring 14 activities such as a winery and wine exhibition, an innovation competition, and an art biennial. Making its China debut in 2018 in Beijing, the CMB has this year brought together nearly 400 international judges and over 7,000 wine samples, including a record number of entries from China, according to CMB Chairman Baudouin Havaux. 'This event opens a new era for the global visibility of the Chinese wine industry,' Havaux said. He added that it is no coincidence the 32nd edition of the CMB is being held in Yinchuan, as it clearly reflects the growing strength of Chinese wine, especially that of Ningxia. After four decades of development, Ningxia has become China's largest wine-producing region. The eastern foot of Helan Mountain is widely regarded as a 'golden zone' for grape growing and high-end wine production. By the end of 2024, Ningxia had more than 600,000 mu (around 40,000 hectares) of wine grape plantations and an annual wine output of 140 million bottles. Its wines are exported to over 40 countries and regions.
