USC Football: 2025 Trojans Season Preview and Prediction
Lincoln Riley's fourth season at USC and second in the Big Ten is critical for a program that hasn't tasted the College Football Playoff. Riley likes the development of both lines and quarterback Jayden Maiava's potential with potentially elite wideouts in Lemon and Lane. After going 1-4 on the road in 2024, USC faces difficult trips to Oregon, Notre Dame, Illinois and Nebraska. The Trojans also must fare better in close games.

Previewing USC's Offense for 2025
Head coach Lincoln Riley wants to build at the line of scrimmage and has an offensive front with several homegrown prospects (Elijah Paige, Alani Noa) mixed with transfers (J'Onre Reed, DJ Wingfield). Paige earned Freshman All-America honors in 2024, while Wingfield's versatility and intelligence have stood out to Riley.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava went 3-1 after replacing Miller Moss and went through the offseason as the clear-cut starter. Riley saw 'a lot of tremendous plays' from Maiava in 2024 and now wants to see the junior balance aggressiveness with ball security.
He will have two gifted targets in junior wide receivers Makai Lemon (764 receiving yards) and Ja'Kobi Lane (12 touchdowns). Boise State transfer Prince Strachan will also be part of the wideout rotation. Lake McRee once again leads the tight ends.
After two successful SEC transfers at running back (MarShawn Lloyd, Woody Marks), USC turns to one of its own in Bryan Jackson, who shined in the bowl win against Texas A&M. New Mexico transfer Eli Sanders and junior-college transfer Waymond Jordan round out the group.

Previewing USC's Defense for 2025
USC has gotten much bigger along the line, which Riley expects to be a team strength. There's a good veteran core in Devan Thompkins, Braylan Shelby and Anthony Lucas, intriguing transfers like Keeshawn Silver and a splashy recruit in Jahkeem Stewart. 'Across the board, interior, on the edge, the size, the strength, just the quality of depth and competition, you definitely feel that,' Riley says.

Eric Gentry returns to lead the linebackers after concussions forced him to redshirt in 2024. First-year linebackers coach Rob Ryan will oversee a group that includes promising sophomore Desman Stephens II.
The secondary has some question marks outside of safety Kamari Ramsey, but transfers DJ Harvey (San José State) and Bishop Fitzgerald (NC State) will be factors.

Previewing USC's Specialists for 2025
USC will have a new kicker in Caden Chittenden, a Freshman All-American at UNLV, and a new punter in Sam Johnson, who replaces Ray Guy Award winner Eddie Czaplicki. Lemon handled kickoff returns in 2024 and might take over punt returns.

Where ESPN ranks Clemson's 2025 schedule among toughest, easiest in college football
Week 1 of the 2025 college football season is less than a month away, and the Clemson Tigers have officially reported to fall camp. The Tigers, named the preseason favorites to win the ACC in the conference media poll, will face LSU on Aug. 30 at Memorial Stadium in a matchup that's as big as season openers get these days. A Clemson win would send a signal to the rest of college football that Dabo Swinney's Tigers are not only back, but that they're a serious threat to compete for the national title. A loss to LSU would hardly be fatal to Clemson's hopes of reaching the expanded College Football Playoff, but it would continue the narrative that the Tigers have been surpassed by their SEC counterparts after going 0-3 against them in head-to-head play last year, and just 3-7 since the 2019 national title game. As for the rest of Clemson's 2025 slate, ESPN senior college football writer Chris Low took a look at the toughest and easiest schedules for every Power Four conference team and FBS member. Here's what Low said about the Tigers' 2025 schedule. Clemson has toughest nonconference Power Four schedule, ESPN says In addition to Clemson's season opener with LSU, the Tigers will close the regular season against a South Carolina program that's on the rise after going 9-3 a year ago and winning their second straight trip to Death Valley. Having to face LSU's Garrett Nussmeier and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers gives Clemson the toughest nonconference Power Four schedule in the nation, Low says. The veteran ESPN scribe put the Tigers' 12-game slate ahead of Stanford and Miami for the most difficult schedule (the Hurricanes face Notre Dame and the Florida Gators in nonconference play). "This was a coin flip between Clemson and Stanford until quarterback Jake Retzlaff departed BYU. Now the trip to No. 10 BYU on Sept. 6 doesn't look quite as daunting for the Cardinal, who end the season Nov. 29 at home against No. 7 Notre Dame. So Clemson gets the nod. The Tigers open the season Aug. 31 at home against No. 6 LSU, then close the season Nov. 29 on the road against bitter rival South Carolina, which is ranked No. 13. Clemson also faces Troy, a top contender in the Sun Belt Conference, at home a week after the LSU opener." --Chris Low, ESPN Low also put Clemson's matchups with LSU and South Carolina on his list of college football's 12 "must-see" games for 2025. Can Clemson, Dabo Swinney reverse fortunes against SEC heavyweights? For the second straight year and the third time since 2021, Clemson opens the season with a marquee nonconference showdown against an SEC opponent. The Tigers fell to the Georgia Bulldogs, 34-3, in Week 1 last year at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Clemson has dropped two of the past three meetings against South Carolina, as well as a lopsided defeat against Tennessee in the 2022 Orange Bowl, and a loss the 2021 opener against Georgia in Charlotte. The Tigers defeated the Gamecocks the last time the two rivals met in Columbia in 2023 and capped their season with a win over Kentucky in the Gator Bowl. "Clemson is 18-12 vs. the SEC since the start of the 2012 season, but the Tigers have lost seven of their past 10 games to SEC opponents, beginning with a 42-25 loss to LSU in the 2019 national championship game." --Chris Low, ESPN Easiest Power Four schedule belongs to ACC team, ESPN believes According to Low, the Power Four team with the easiest path to a bowl game in 2025 resides in the ACC: Wake Forest. A big reason why? The Deacs won't have Clemson on their schedule for the first time since before the ACC was even founded in 1953. Clemson and Wake Forest were two of the ACC's charter members, along with Duke, North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina and Maryland. "The Deacons avoid Clemson, Miami and Louisville in the ACC. Their first four games are at home along with two of their last three games. A game at No. 24 Ole Miss was replaced by a trip to Oregon State, meaning there are no Power 4 nonconference foes on the Deacons' schedule. Florida's top running back Jadan Baugh named to Paul Hornung Award preseason watch list
Florida Gators sophomore running back Jadan Baugh was listed among those named in the 2025 Paul Hornung Award preseason watch list ahead of the upcoming college football campaign. The sophomore out of Atlanta, Georgia, had a stellar debut campaign in Gainesville last season, playing in all 13 games while leading the team with 673 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns, and tied for a team-best seven rushing touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Baugh's efforts earned him a Freshman All-SEC honor for his work following the conclusion of the season. Baugh tied Trey Burton (2010) and Tim Tebow (2007) for the program record of five rushing touchdowns in his first start against the Kentucky Wildcats, which was also the most touchdowns made by a Gator in their first-career start. Serving as the Gators' primary kick returner, Baugh averaged 21.6 yards per return and is one of eight SEC players and one of 11 freshmen in FBS to have two 30-yard-plus kick returns. About the Paul Hornung Award The Paul Hornung Award — named after the Notre Dame Fighting Irish's All-American and Heisman Trophy winner who played the halfback, quarterback and kicker positions during his college career — is given to the most versatile player in college football. Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza (+3000) After spending the first two seasons of his career at California (2023-24), Mendoza transferred to Indiana, with whom he's expected to be the team's 2025 starting quarterback. Last season, the 6-foot-5 Mendoza totaled 3,004 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and a 144.6 passer rating, while completing 68.7% of his passes. He joins a Hoosiers team that's coming off an 11-2 season, highlighted by an appearance in the College Football Playoff. 9. Auburn DE Keldric Faulk (+2800) Faulk is one of the faces of an Auburn team that's looking to break through in its soon-to-be third season under head coach Hugh Freeze. Last season, Faulk racked up seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 45 combined tackles. T-6. Ohio State DB/PR Caleb Downs (+2500) After shining at Alabama in his 2023 freshman season, Downs transferred to Ohio State in the wake of legendary Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban retiring. Year 1 in Columbus went quite well for the former five-star recruit. As a defensive back, Downs totaled two interceptions, six passes defended, eight tackles for loss and 82 combined tackles, while also returning six punts and running back one of them for a touchdown. Downs earned All-American honors in a season that saw the Buckeyes win the National Championship. T-6. Clemson DE T.J. Parker (+2500) After a solid freshman campaign, Parker was a force to be reckoned with for the Tigers in his sophomore season in 2024. In the latter year, Parker totaled 11.0 sacks, an ACC-high six forced fumbles, 20 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and 57 combined tackles on a Clemson team that won the ACC and reached the College Football Playoff. Parker will be an early favorite to win 2025 ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. T-6. Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt (+2500) Leavitt transferred from Michigan State to Arizona State for the 2024 season in what turned out to be a fun ride for the program. In what was his first full year as a starting quarterback at the collegiate level, Leavitt flashed dual-threat ability. In the air, he totaled 2,885 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and a 150.2 passer rating, while completing 61.7% of his passes. On the ground, Leavitt rushed for 443 yards and five touchdowns. Leavitt and the Sun Devils finished 11-3, won the Big 12 and reached the College Football Playoff before a heartbreaking overtime loss to Texas in the quarterfinal round. 5. Clemson QB Cade Klubnik (+1200) The 2025 season will be Klubnik's third under center for the Tigers, and he's coming off an encouraging 2024 campaign. In said season, Klubnik totaled 3,639 passing yards, 36 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and a 148.2 passer rating, while completing 63.4% of his passes. He also rushed for 463 yards and seven touchdowns. Klubnik led Clemson to an ACC title and subsequently a berth in the College Football Playoff. 4. South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers (+800) Sellers was South Carolina's starting quarterback for all but one game in 2024 in what was a season that saw the freshman turn heads. As a passer, Sellers totaled 2,534 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 151.9 passer rating, while completing 65.6% of his passes. He also rushed for 674 yards and seven touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound signal-caller flashed a capable arm, while imposing his will on the ground in a season that saw the Gamecocks go 9-4. 3. LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier (+425) After sitting on the bench for the better part of three seasons, Nussmeier became LSU's starting quarterback in 2024 and more than held his own. Nussmeier totaled 4,052 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 142.7 passer rating, while completing 64.2% of his passes in a 9-4 season for the Tigers. As with any season at LSU, Nussmeier and the Tigers have high expectations for the 2025 season, which will be their fourth season under head coach Brian Kelly. LSU will go as far as the gun-slinging Nussmeier, who led the SEC with 525 pass attempts last season, takes them. 2. Penn State QB Drew Allar (+275) After a 2023 season that saw Allar throw for a Big Ten-high 25 touchdowns, he put together an even more convincing 2024 campaign, which saw the quarterback throw with conviction and lead the Nittany Lions to the semifinal round of the College Football Playoff. Allar totaled 3,327 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 153.5 passer rating, while completing 66.5% of his passes. He also rushed for 302 yards and six touchdowns. 1. Texas QB Arch Manning (+225) Yes, there's another, and this one is named after the grandfather. Manning will be the Longhorns' quarterback next season after backing up Quinn Ewers in 2024 and appearing in just two games in 2023. Manning, the No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2023, actually made two starts for Texas last season and appeared in 10 games total, primarily as a rushing threat when he was brought in for select plays. In all, Manning totaled 939 passing yards, nine passing touchdowns, two interceptions and a 184.0 passer rating, while completing 67.8% of his passes and rushing for 108 yards and four touchdowns. He's under center for a Texas team that reached the semifinal round of the College Football Playoff last season and has its sights set on a National Championship.
