Restaurant owner admits he 'chopped up and cooked man's body with a butcher's knife'

A restaurateur is due to face trial this week for the gruesome act of "chopping up and cooking" a man with a butcher's knife, before dispersing his remains throughout France.
Philippe Schneider, 69, alongside Nathalie Caboubassy, 43, stand accused of the murder of Georges Meichler in 2023.
His daughter's missing person report instigated a police probe.
Following his arrest, Schneider recounted to the authorities how he and Caboubassy were burgling Meichler's secluded woodland abode when they knocked him down, resulting in his death.
To prevent the discovery of the body, they dismembered the corpse and concealed the parts in the vicinity.
It is alleged that Schneider subsequently cooked portions of the remains in a bowl at his residence as part of a purported "religious ceremony."
France3 reports that Schneider's solicitor, Luc Abratkiewicz, commented: "They cut up the body, they cooked it in a mess tin, and then they burned the rest. It's crude, but that's how it is.", reports the Mirror.
"Of course, there's the horror of imagining the body was cut up, cooked, burned, but then you have a burglary that goes wrong, a body you don't know what to do with, and this completely crazy idea of wanting to get rid of it.
"It's mainly about explaining the act, the motive, which is trivial, a few thousand euros, and then you sink into the horror.
"Philippe Schneider acknowledges his full responsibility and all the facts he is accused of. Philippe Schneider's version is that at the time he lived a life of alcohol, drugs, and then this completely crazy idea of going to burgle his neighbour. He gags him. It goes badly, he dies.
"He made a serious mistake. And afterward, he continued to sink into absurdity and horror, because, indeed, the fact of having cut up this corpse is going to cost them dearly."
Schneider and his partner Nathalie Caboubassy, 43, resided in Camarès. They had previously travelled and worked for high-end restaurants before they opened a pizzeria in Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance prior to the Covid outbreak.

The Scottish Mail on Sunday reports that Baroness Mone sold a £19m London townhouse and £6.8m Lady M Yacht last year. It comes after Glasgow-born Mone and her billionaire husband Doug Barrowman had £75m worth of assets frozen by the National Crime Agency (NCA). The couple are at the centre of a fraud probe over the firm PPE Medpro, controlled by Barrowman, that was awarded £203m worth of UK Government contracts through a 'VIP lane' during the Covid-19 pandemic. In November 2023, Mone finally admitted her involvement with PPE Medpro for the first time, after years of denying any links to the company. Several properties were frozen under the Proceeds of Crime Act in 2023. And now, Mone has reportedly sold her Glasgow homes. The Mail on Sunday reports that there is no suggestion any of the property sales breached any existing orders put in place by the NCA. One townhouse in Glasgow's plush Park Circus was bought by Barrowman's Knox business group for £1.7m in 2020. The couple have now reportedly sold this to a photographer for £2m last year. Another nearby townhouse was sold for £2.8m, allegedly to a Scottish musician, who was not named. It was bought in July 2020 for just over £1.4m. Baby found dead as police probe 'unexplained' incident at home
Officers were called to an address following reports of a death of a baby on Sunday morning. A baby has been found dead at a home with police launching a probe to determine the circumstances around the "unexplained" incident. This comes after a body was found by police in the search for a Colombian woman who disappeared after leaving her home in east London. Yajaira Castro Mendez, 46, was reported missing to the Metropolitan Police on May 31 having left her home in Ilford on the morning of May 29. Her family has been told about the discovery of the body, which was found during searches in Hampshire's Bolderwood area on Saturday, but formal identification has yet to be made. Detective Inspector Jay Gregory, who is leading the investigation, said: 'This is a very sad development in the investigation and our thoughts are very much with Yajaira's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. 'We continue to appeal to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to please come forward.' A post-mortem examination has yet to take place. The police said a man who was known to Ms Castro Mendez appeared in court on Friday charged with her murder and was remanded into custody. Her disappearance was initially treated as a missing person investigation led by local officers. The investigation was then transferred to the Met's Specialist Crime Command on June 5, after a range of extensive further inquiries suggested she had come to harm. Police were at a scene in Gray's Inn Road, Camden, on Friday as part of their investigation.
