A woman is facing criminal charges after a disturbing video allegedly showing her choking a dog circulated on social media. The Butler County Sheriff's Office in Ohio announced that 28-year-old Katelin Conklin has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty and domestic violence. Her arrest followed an investigation triggered by the release of the video last month.
According to authorities, the video shows Conklin physically assaulting her boyfriend and violently attacking a dog. The footage allegedly captures Conklin punching her boyfriend and choking the dog, which can be heard struggling to breathe. She is also seen forcefully throwing the animal to the ground.
Deputies responded to a residence on Buena Avenue after receiving the video. Following conversations with both Conklin and her boyfriend, she was taken into custody.
'This type of behaviour is unacceptable,' said Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones. 'We take both domestic violence and animal cruelty very seriously and will always pursue charges when the evidence supports it.'
It comes after a Brazilian beauty queen was stripped of her title and now faces jail after a video of her surfaced online allegedly attacking a cat with a firecracker.
The incident is thought to have taken place around New Year in Araucaria, a city in the state of Parana, Brazil. Beauty queen Gabrielly Palacio, 19, was allegedly seen lighting a firecracker and throwing it towards a cat as she laughed with a friend. Following the video's release, Palacio was stripped of her 'Miss Araucaria 2024' title by the pageant organisers.
Animal rights activists have also widely condemned the act and demanded legal action. Under Brazilian law, animal abuse is punishable by up to five years in prison. Local authorities say they are currently investigating the incident, while Palacio has not issued a public statement regarding the allegations.
The clip, which the Mirror has chosen not to share, sparked outrage on social media, with several disgusted viewers slamming Palacio's actions and calling for accountability. One user wrote: "This is absolutely disgusting. She should face the full consequences of her actions."
Another said: "It's sad to see someone in her position behaving like this. A crown comes with responsibility." One user argued: "I think she needs education on animal rights rather than punishment. People make mistakes." The case has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws in Brazil.
It comes after the RSPCA claimed young people are at risk of being desensitised to animal cruelty as 'terrifyingly high' numbers are now exposed to vile images online. The charity found more than two-fifths of people aged 16 and 17 and almost a third of 18 to 24s have seen avoidable animal suffering online, compared with a fifth of all people.
Reports to its emergency line about animal cruelty on social media were on course to hit a four-year high. Since the start of 2020, there have been 2,000 reports logged. he RSPCA claims there is a 'compassion gap' between generations, with those spending the most time online having the least favourable opinions about animal welfare.
Chief executive Chris Sherwood said: 'There's a growing concern the proliferation of abuse content online risks normalising animal harm, pain and suffering. We're concerned by the high numbers of young people being exposed to such images.'

Baby found dead as police probe 'unexplained' incident at home
Officers were called to an address following reports of a death of a baby on Sunday morning. A baby has been found dead at a home with police launching a probe to determine the circumstances around the "unexplained" incident. This comes after a body was found by police in the search for a Colombian woman who disappeared after leaving her home in east London. Yajaira Castro Mendez, 46, was reported missing to the Metropolitan Police on May 31 having left her home in Ilford on the morning of May 29. Her family has been told about the discovery of the body, which was found during searches in Hampshire's Bolderwood area on Saturday, but formal identification has yet to be made. Detective Inspector Jay Gregory, who is leading the investigation, said: 'This is a very sad development in the investigation and our thoughts are very much with Yajaira's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. 'We continue to appeal to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to please come forward.' A post-mortem examination has yet to take place. The police said a man who was known to Ms Castro Mendez appeared in court on Friday charged with her murder and was remanded into custody. Her disappearance was initially treated as a missing person investigation led by local officers. Mum's 'miracle' as son missing for six weeks returns home after 'police mistake'
"He was a vulnerable young adult. I don't understand why they just let him go in that condition. They should have shown more of a duty of care." A mum has told of a "miracle" as her teenage son returned home after going missing for six weeks following a "huge police mistake". Deante James, 17, vanished from his home in Enfield, North London, in March after smoking what he thought was cannabis. He was then found on May 17. The teen was unaware it contained the synthetic cannabinoid Spice, which can cause psychosis. Deante, a normally ambitious boy who loved going to the gym, began hallucinating and hearing voices. His worried family took him to hospital, where doctors had said he had signs of drug-induced psychosis. He received treatment and was on the mend, but back at home he had another episode and on March 31 bolted out of the back door without his mobile phone or any money. Six weeks passed before he was found. Just as his mum, Vandana Bhogowoth, was losing hope, the police called to say he was safe and in hospital. Speaking to the Mirror, she said: 'I don't think I'll ever forget that day. It was probably one of the best days of my life. Oh my God, the emotions – I just burst out crying. I've never felt happiness like it. It was pure happiness – and relief.' The single mum thanked the Mirror and Sunday Mirror for running its Missed campaign, which she credits with helping to find him. Vandana, 36 – who prayed to God for help two days before hearing Deante was found on May 17 – said: 'The publicity made the police take the case more seriously. I'm really thankful to everyone, also my local MP and the Missing People charity, who pushed the police to take it seriously and get him found. I think highlighting it did push them. Everyone collectively helped – thank you. I'm so grateful.' Deante was admitted to hospital had told staff he was 18, and his parents were not traced. Vandana first told her story to the Mirror on May 11, at which point she did not know whether Deante was dead or alive. She had been told her son had been arrested by British Transport Police three days after he went missing for not being able to pay his tube fare - only for them to let him go. The college teacher now knows this was because Deante had given his name the wrong way round, and it did not flag him up as missing. She has also learned police made every effort to obtain historic mobile phone data to identify any associates who might have known where he was and trawled CCTV footage to try to locate him. But despite Deante giving the BTP officers his correct date of birth and address, police did not contact her. While Vandana searched, his older sister Jaidaima, 19, created a TikTok video of her and her brother to try to help find him. It was viewed more than 73,000 times. While grateful to the police for finding her son and letting her know he was safe, Vandana still feels a lack of joined-up communication between the essential services meant he fell through the cracks. Why didn't they phone his parents? "It makes me really upset because I think the [police and hospital ] could have saved me and my family this ordeal and the devastation of not knowing where he was. I tried to stay as positive as I could, but at the back of my mind I did have dark thoughts, like, 'What if he's been kidnapped? What if he's dead?'' Vandana says Deante is 'absolutely fine' now. The relieved mum adds: 'He's recovering and he's going to get back to his absolute best self, so I'm really happy, positive and extremely grateful to everyone. He's looking forward to getting his life back on track and following his dreams. As a family we can't wait to celebrate his 18th birthday now. We're going to spoil him.'
