
Huge change to Tesco Clubcards in fruit and veg campaign
From 24 July, around 4 million customers will be invited to earn personalised Clubcard stamps on fresh fruit and veg, which can be converted into bonus Clubcard points and vouchers to spend in store. Millions of customers will also be able to earn extra points through new Clubcard Challenges on frozen fruit and veg, beans and pulses.
New Clubcard Prices and offers will be available across the summer on fruit, veg and healthy lunchbox snacks, on top of weekly Fresh 5 offers on five-a-day basics. A revamped 5-a-day hub on the Tesco Real Food website will provide recipe ideas and inspiration.
In addition, from 4-17 August, children shopping with their families in Tesco stores will be able to pick up free fruit at checkout. Tesco expects to give away over 3.5 million apples over two weeks.

Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, said: 'Obesity has doubled since the 1990s and costs our NHS £11 billion a year. Unless we curb the rising tide of cost and demand, the NHS risks becoming unsustainable. But we can't do this alone. The declining health of the nation requires a national mission, working with all parts of our society – from industry to influencers – to reverse the decline and make sure that kids today grow up to be part of the healthiest generation ever. Our brilliant supermarkets already do so much work for our communities and are trying to make their stores heathier, and we want to work with them and other businesses to create a level playing field.
'I'm grateful to Tesco for picking up the mantle and helping tackle this crisis by making it easier and more affordable for families and kids to eat fresh fruit and veg. Tesco has issued a 'do not eat' warning to shoppers across the UK after salmonella was found in multiple products sold by the supermarket giant. Customers at Tesco are being urged not to eat multiple meal deal items due to the possible presence of salmonella. The affected items are the Tesco Basil Pesto & Semi Dried Tomato Pasta with a use by date of July 24, the Tesco Chicken & Chorizo Pasta with a use by date of July 24 or July 25, and the Tesco Feta Semi Dried Tomato Pasta with a use by date of July 24. Salmonella was found in the products during routine testing by Tesco. Thursday 24 July. The spring rolls contain sesame and soya which is not mentioned on the label, making them a health risk to anyone with allergies to the ingredients. The affected boxes have a use by date of July 25, 2025. 'If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to sesame and/or soya, do not eat it. 'Instead, return it to your local Waitrose and Partners branch for a full refund. 'Please contact Waitrose Customer Care on 0800 188 884, option 4, for further information.' A Waitrose spokesman added: 'We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.' The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a health warning to any customers who have purchased a chocolate bar which may pose a 'serious health risk'. The FSA has also issued urgent advice to any businesses who may be selling the chocolate in the UK. The warning surrounds the Neosis Schokolade Love of Dubai chocolate which contains peanuts not mentioned on the label. As a result, the FSA says it poses 'a serious risk to anyone with an allergy to peanuts'. An FSA spokesperson said: "If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to hazelnuts (nuts) do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. The strawberry and chocolate flavours are affected by the recall, which has been issued because they contain milk not mentioned on the label in English and may also contain nuts (pistachios), peanuts and soya, making them a health risk to anyone with a milk or nut allergy. A popular breakfast choice sold at Tesco, Ocado, Amazon and other outlets has been recalled because it may contain insects. 'I thought my snoring was from blocked nose, but it was something far worse'
Cornwall mum-of-two Claire Barbery was left in shock after what she thought was a blocked nose and snoring turned out to be something much more serious A mum-of-two was left stunned after what she thought was a harmless blocked nose and new snoring habit turned out to be a sign of a rare and aggressive cancer, which was already eroding her skull. Claire Barbery, 51, from Newquay, Cornwall, had no idea her mild symptoms were anything to worry about. In fact, she nearly cancelled the very hospital appointment that would change, and possibly save, her life. Claire, who works in a care home, put her persistent nasal blockage down to repeated Covid tests and thought nothing of the fact that she had suddenly started snoring at night. She said: 'I started snoring, which I'd never done before. I was waking up breathing through my mouth. Even then, I nearly cancelled my hospital appointment. I didn't want to waste anyone's time.' But in January 2023, after months of no improvement and with her concerns growing, she finally sought help. The mum had olfactory neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that grows in the upper part of the nasal cavity. Scans revealed a 5cm tumour that had already begun eating away at the bone at the base of her skull. Claire was immediately sent for complex and high-risk surgery at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where consultant surgeon Shahz Ahmed, who specialises in the type of procedure she needed, removed the tumour in a delicate operation that was filmed for Channel 5's gripping documentary Surgeons: A Matter of Life or Death. He explained: 'This was a very rare form of cancer. It had already gone through the skull base and into the base of the brain. If we hadn't acted, it could have spread through her body. The surgery was high risk – we were working close to the brain's main blood supply, with dangers of stroke, seizures, and even death.' The operation was a success, but not without cost. To ensure all the cancer was removed, surgeons had to take out Claire's olfactory bulbs, meaning she's now permanently lost her sense of smell. After her surgery, Claire underwent six gruelling weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She's now under close monitoring but is slowly returning to work and spending quality time with her husband Gary and daughters Lowenna, 27, and Keizha, 25. 'I very nearly didn't go to that appointment,' Claire said. 'I thought, 'There's nothing wrong – don't waste NHS time.' But looking back, that decision could've cost me my life.' Now, as part of World Head and Neck Cancer Day, Claire is working with the UK's Get A-Head Charitable Trust to raise awareness and urge others to take persistent symptoms seriously, no matter how small they seem. She said: 'If you know your body, you've got to push. If something feels wrong – don't ignore it.'

Llandrindod's Samaritans branch could be under threat
UNCERTAINTY clouds the future of Powys' sole Samaritans branch, after the suicide prevention charity announced that at least half of its offices in the UK will close. The proposals were revealed in a video message to staff earlier this month, sent by the leadership of the charity. It is believed there is no definitive view on how many branches the charity will close, but chief executive Julie Bentley said: 'It's likely that within the next seven to 10 years our branch network will have (been) reduced by at least half. 'With less branches, we'll look to move to fewer but bigger regions.' Samaritans has more than 200 branches across the UK. Llandrindod Wells is the only one in Powys and one of 10 in Wales. The list of branches which could close has not been decided; though if the charity's board agrees to the plans at a meeting in September, the changes will begin in April in the UK and 2027 in Ireland. In response to the closures, Plaid Cymru health spokesperson, Mabon ap Gwynfor, expressed particular concern on the impact the closures will have on the Welsh Government's suicide prevention strategy. He called for 'urgent explanations' from the Welsh Government. 'The work that the Samaritans do day in, day out is invaluable,' he said. 'The news of so many branches closing will be met with disappointment and fear in Wales and across the UK. 'We need urgent explanations from the Welsh Government about what this means for Wales' mental health and suicide prevention strategy. 'We must also recognise the invaluable service offered by the Samaritans through the medium of Welsh – a service that we must try to protect.' Founded in 1953, the Samaritans focus on preventing suicides by connecting trained volunteers with people who are struggling. The charity estimates it answers a call for help every 10 seconds. The news comes as the charity launched a groundbreaking project at the Royal Welsh Show to reduce suicide in farming communities. Samaritans Cymru is setting out to break the cycle of suicide risk in rural Wales by launching the 'Our Farming, Our Future' project. The project will work closely with Wales Young Farmers Clubs (YFC) in Ceredigion, Brecknock, Montgomery and Radnorshire to develop peer-led activities and resources that can be cascaded across farming communities to reduce the risk of suicide in rural areas. Powys Samaritans is the youngest Samaritans branch (premises based) in the UK and was set up in the wake of the foot and mouth outbreak in 1994. Over the last 31 years the branch has moved from a one-bedroomed flat to renting a larger premises; and it now owns an entire building on the spa town's High Street, comprising of upstairs rooms for listening volunteers and training, in addition to a charity shop on the ground floor which brings in the majority of funding.
