Jun. 14—The following stories from this week appeared on
www.jamestownsun.com
and in The Jamestown Sun.
The Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp. unanimously
approved funding
on Monday, June 9, to help an existing child care center with its expansion.
The funding request from Explorer's Academy Jamestown LLC was for $10,000 through the JSDC's Daycare Expansion Assistance Program that helps new child care startups and existing remodeling projects increase capacity.
The city's share will be $8,000 with the county's share being $2,000.
Explorer's Academy Jamestown LLC, which does business as Explorers Academy, is expanding its child care center that provides care for infants to school-aged children, said Alyssa Looysen, business development director at JSDC. She said the expansion gives Explorers Academy flexibility to grow its after-school care program and its current capacity of other age groups.
The number of calls for service to the Jamestown Police Department in 2024
were down by about 400
when compared to 2023 but that was mostly attributed to a winter with little snowfall, according to Scott Edinger, Jamestown chief of police.
The Jamestown Police Department had more than 14,600 calls for service in 2024 compared to around 15,000 in 2022 and 2023, according to the 2024 Jamestown Police Department annual report.
Edinger said one of the biggest contributors to the reduction in calls for service is snow-related towing on emergency routes.
"We were down more than 300 of those last year because the weather was so good," he said.
He said the number of motorist assist calls were also down when compared to 2023 because of the winter. The Jamestown Police Department responded to 122 motorist assist calls in 2024 compared to 182 in 2023 and 201 in 2022.
The Friends of the James River Valley Library System is working to
complete a fundraising campaign
that will be used to update patron computers and purchase audio-enabled children's books.
The Friends of the James River Valley Library System has a $25,000 fundraising goal. The nonprofit organization has raised about $15,000 of that $25,000 goal, said Katie Webster, treasurer of the Friends of the James River Valley Library System.
The Friends of the James River Valley Library System is an independent, nonprofit volunteer organization that works to further the educational and informational needs of the community through support of the library system, according to its website.
Joe Rector, library system director, said the current computers are becoming obsolete. The current computers don't meet the requirements for Windows 11.
Windows 10 will reach the end of support on Oct. 14, according to Microsoft's website.
The James River Valley Library System Board of Directors will need to work on
ensuring all bills are paid and separate assets
between the city of Jamestown and Stutsman County as part of the dissolution process, according to a letter to the board from Abbagail Geroux, the library system's attorney.
The Jamestown City Council approved in October providing a two-year notice to the Stutsman County Commission that the city of Jamestown will withdraw from the memorandum of agreement to provide joint library services. The city says the county is not providing its fair share of financial contributions to provide joint library services.
The library board unanimously approved in March a preference to have the city of Jamestown and Stutsman County continue to offer joint library services, said Sarah Hellekson, city administrator who is a county-appointed member to the library board, at the library board meeting on Wednesday, June 11.
Written consent and approval from the city of Jamestown and Stutsman County will be needed to either continue providing joint library services or to dissolve and have the city provide library services with a contract with the county, Geroux wrote. She wrote that no further action can be taken toward those two options without the written consent and approval of both entities.

Popular Colorado tourist destination shows support for local Safeway workers on strike

On Father's Day, downtown Estes Park, a popular Colorado tourist destination, was packed. But the town's only supermarket, a Safeway, was not because workers are striking. "Yeah. I would guess that the cars that we're seeing in here today are tourists. The locals are staying away," said Estes Park Mayor Gary Hall. CBS Picketers outside the store are asking people not to patronize the business, which could make getting food difficult for some, but Hall says for most people, it's not a problem. "All of the people who work at the Estes Park Safeway are friends and neighbors of ours. So, there's very high support in town, for me included, because I know all these people on a first name basis. I want them to receive reasonable pay, good benefits, good working conditions," said Hall. That means to get groceries, residents and tourists need to drive out of town or shop at the other smaller markets in town. One, the Country Market of Estes Park, seemed to be picking up the slack so far, but it isn't as big as the Safeway. CBS "That is a great, friendly place, but [it] doesn't have the volume that this Safeway does. And with all the tourists in town, the goods disappear very quickly," said Hall. With the large number of tourists and how much the town relies on tourism dollars, you might think the mayor might be worried that this strike could drive people away. But he's sure that there are plenty of other options for people in Estes Park. "There's a lot of stores that have shelves of food, a lot of it's snack-type stuff," said Hall. "We have a lot of restaurants, and so there's plenty of food in town."

3 Top Stocks I Wouldn't Hesitate to Invest $1,000 in Right Now

Alphabet trades at a very appealing valuation these days. Brookfield Infrastructure offers an attractive combination of income, growth, and value. Prologis has an excellent record of delivering above-average growth. 10 stocks we like better than Alphabet › This year has been a bit more volatile than most of us had probably hoped. Wars that we thought might end soon are flaring back up. Tariff-driven trade disputes have arisen. And on top of all that, inflation has continued to stick around, which has kept interest rates high. These factors have caused stocks to gyrate, making it tough to invest with much confidence. Despite all this uncertainty, there are a few stocks I wouldn't hesitate to buy in the current environment. Topping that list are Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL), Brookfield Infrastructure (NYSE: BIP)(NYSE: BIPC), and Prologis (NYSE: PLD). Given their combination of financial strength, visible growth, and reasonable valuations, I wouldn't hesitate to invest $1,000 in any one of them right now. Alphabet is one of the world's largest technology companies. From its ubiquitous Google search engine to its popular YouTube platform, cloud computing, and beyond, Alphabet has an expansive business. The tech titan generates massive revenues (over $90 billion in the first quarter) and prodigious profits (nearly $35 billion last quarter). It's growing quickly despite its enormous size (its revenue rose 12% last quarter, while its net income soared 46%). Its robust profitability enables it to invest heavily in expanding its business while returning boatloads of cash to shareholders. On the growth front, Alphabet is going all-in on artificial intelligence (AI). It rolled out Gemini 2.5 in the first quarter, its most intelligent AI model. The company is leveraging the power of AI to boost its Google search business through new features, such as AI overviews. It's also providing customers with AI infrastructure and generative AI solutions. Meanwhile, it's returning more cash to investors by recently hiking its dividend by 5% and approving a new $70 billion share repurchase authorization. Despite its robust growth, Alphabet trades at a relatively attractive valuation these days. With a forward price-to-earnings ratio of around 18.5 times, it trades at a discount to the broader market index. The S&P 500 trades at 22.5 times forward earnings, while the Nasdaq-100 fetches 28 times forward earnings. Alphabet's combination of growth and value is hard to beat. Leading global infrastructure operator Brookfield Infrastructure also offers a compelling combination of growth and value. The company expects to grow its funds from operations (FFO) by more than 10% per share this year. It believes it can continue growing at a more than 10% annual rate in the future, driven by inflation-linked rate increases, volume growth, expansion projects (notably data centers and semiconductor fabrication plants), and acquisitions. The company has already lined up a couple of deals this year to help bolster its growth rate. Brookfield Infrastructure's outlook, implying that it will deliver more than 10% FFO per share growth this year, suggests it will generate at least $3.43 per share in FFO this year. With the stock recently trading at less than $41.50 per share, Brookfield sells for around 12 times its FFO. That dirt cheap valuation is a big reason why Brookfield offers such an attractive dividend yield. At over 4%, it's more than double the S&P 500's dividend yield. The company's combination of growth and income at a value price puts it in a strong position to produce robust total returns from here. Leading industrial real estate investment trust (REIT) Prologis has an extensive record of delivering above-average growth. The company has grown its core FFO at a 12% compound annual rate over the past five years, outpacing the S&P 500's 9% rate. That has also supported faster compound annual dividend growth during that period (13% versus 5% for the S&P 500). While the industrial real estate market is currently facing some headwinds due to all the market uncertainty, Prologis' leadership position has enabled it to continue thriving. It delivered 10.9% core FFO per share growth during the quarter, driven by strong leasing demand for its properties, new build-to-suit projects with strategic customers, and its strategic investments to capitalize on the growing demand for data centers to support AI and other catalysts. Prologis expects the industry's current headwinds to eventually fade. Limited new supply of warehouses and high construction costs should drive continued rent growth. Meanwhile, the REIT has a fortress-like balance sheet, giving it the flexibility to pounce on new investment opportunities as they arise (acquisitions and development projects). These catalysts should continue driving above-average growth. Add in its attractive valuation (shares are nearly 20% below their 52-week high) and dividend yield (3.8%), and Prologis is in a strong position to produce robust total returns for its investors. Alphabet, Brookfield Infrastructure, and Prologis have excellent track records of growing shareholder value. The companies currently have lots of growth ahead. Despite that, they trade at very reasonable valuations these days. Their combination of growth, financial strength, and value is why I wouldn't hesitate to invest another $1,000 into any one of them right now. Why The Market Is Ready For A Solana ETF With Staking

The Securities and Exchange Commission reportedly asked prospective Solana ETF issuers to submit amended S-1 forms, raising questions about whether a Solana ETF could be approved this year. If so, it could have massive implications for the entire crypto market. In contrast, it took 10+ years for U.S. investors to be able to invest in a Bitcoin ETF, a decade of struggle that included a lawsuit, countless education initiatives and meetings with regulators resulting in one of the biggest ETF launches ever. Canary Marinade Solana ETF S-1 Ethereum showed up pretty soon after (but with no staking, more on that later). The SEC approved the listing of spot Ethereum ETFs in May 2024. Now we may find ourselves on the very cusp of a Solana ETF being approved, which is incredibly important to the longterm acceptance and adoption of digital assets in America. Bitcoin's story was all about the underlying investment being a sort of digital gold. Solana has a different story, and one that is critical for U.S. technical innovation. Solana is a blockchain that people actually use for more than savings and, due to its speed and efficiency for actually building applications. According to the blockchain data published via Dune Analytics, there were roughly 5.5 million Solana wallet accounts with daily activity in May 2025. Choosing to invest in Solana is, in many ways, like choosing to invest in a technology company. There are a myriad of quantitative data points that show the chain is being utilized and there are countless qualitative examples too. Many of those transactions are processed by companies like the crypto exchange Gemini or the infrastructure and investment firm Sol Strategies, which earn revenue from staking assets and validating the chain, with the average daily gas (fee) revenue in April 2025 yielding around $1.2 million. Gate data estimates the total monthly fee revenue reached roughly $37.5 million. Right now Solana users include a healthy mix of DeFi activity, NFTs, and, increasingly, real world assets being brought on chain. Moodys, Societe Generale, R3, Securitize, Franklin Templeton and BlackRock are all building and releasing products on Solana. All of this is why the timing is right for a Solana ETF. What makes the case for a Solana ETF a little more complicated is that, unlike Ethereum, where the staking reward hovers around 2%, the Solana staking reward of +8% cannot be ignored. Remember my mention of Ethereum staking earlier? When the Ethereum ETFs were finally approved last year (under the Biden administration), the SEC required issuers to strip out staking. With Solana's high staking return it is imperative that the SEC not only approve a Solana spot ETF, but, in fairness to investors, an ETF that stakes. Apart from the return dynamics, another important consideration is that Solana requires Solana in a proof-of-stake system to run the network. Right now, according to Blockworks, 6% of bitcoin is locked up in ETFs (which is incredible in and of itself). If that were to happen to Solana, and that SOL could not be staked, it could cause network issues as more and more SOL tokens became unavailable to the network. The SEC recently released guidance on staking, which appears to support native staking (the best and safest way to an ETF to stake). This, along with a request for comment on S1 filings appears to indicate approval is imminent. Approval will be a great way for a set of investors to access Solana in a new way–supporting the network–and allowing them to participate in the likely future growth of the network.
