Lauryn Hill's 2025 Met Gala Look Was All About the Birkin

Vogue06-05-2025

Stop the presses! A rare Lauryn Hill sighting had everyone talking at the 2025 Met Gala tonight. The iconic singer was on hand for the red carpet affair this evening, bringing a dash of sunshine in her sculptural yellow double-breasted suit. Paying homage to the 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' theme this year, a spotlight on Black dandyism and tailoring, Hill chose a modern suit look that was dramatic, very much avant-garde—and totally on point. Her traditional shirt and tie? 10 out of 10—no notes.

Her choice of bag, meanwhile, was a total showstopper as well. Hill carried around a classic (and very luxurious) Hermès Kelly bag in cerulean blue—the ultimate status bag that offered the perfect pop of color to her look. A big Kelly in such a covetable color? It's almost as rare of a find as a splashy red carpet appearance from Hill herself! Combined, it was the most epic pairing. Now, Siri, please play 'Killing Me Softly'—because she was one of the most iconic divas of the night.

Doechii Styles Floor-length Braids With Miu Miu Look for 2025 BET Awards

Doechii was honored for her musical prowess and innovation on Monday at the 2025 BET Awards in Los Angeles, during which she received the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. The 26-year-old rapper and singer, who earlier this year took home the Grammy for Best New Artist, celebrated the night with floor-length braids styled by her longtime hair architect, Malcolm Marquez. The 'Denial Is a River' creator collaborated with Marquez, drawing on her signature style and persona to create a fresh take. While the spiral braids on top of her head felt particularly familiar, the five-foot extensions swinging across her left shoulder were something new. However, Marquez typically adds a braided element in many of her looks. Doechii's hair for the Grammy Awards was a braided crown extension tied on top of her head. Oppositely, Marquez put her in an afro for the 2025 Met Gala and flattened her hair, adding a front fringe and folding the spikey ends on top of her head for her Dazed cover shoot. Her BET Awards makeup was light, consisting of full brows, lash extensions, brown lip liner and a clear gloss. Doechii has famously worked with artist Dee, whose client list includes Ayo Edebiri, but it's not certain whether they were responsible for this glam. Doechii was also a Miu Miu girl on Monday, posing in an all-red, two-piece skirt and bandeau top set with the brand's yellow suede Arcadie bag, layered belts, colorful bangles and a Renato Cipullo Amethyst and Emerald Lucido Ring. Her acrylic nails were also the star of the show, square-cut and painted in an ombré red and gold on one hand and an iridescent amber on the other. Doechii's stylist Sam Woolf also put her in see-through, orange shades, wood hoops and Jimmy Choo sandals with purple flower accents. Back in February, Doechii made her rounds through fashion week, attending all of the major shows and opening the runway for Dsquared2's fall 2025 Milan presentation. Her runway debut saw her emerge out of an armored truck to her own track, 'Nissan Altima.' Instead of braids, Doechii's hair was teased up, blown out and curled, shining as the flood lights hit her. BET Awards 2025 highlights: Jamie Foxx delivers emotional speech, Doechii criticizes Trump's use of ‘military force' to stop L.A. protests, Mariah Carey performs and more

Honoring Black excellence across the entertainment industry, the 2025 BET Awards saw several artists win big, hit the stage for noteworthy performances and give moving acceptance speeches. Here are some highlights from this year's celebration. Jamie Foxx gave an emotional speech while accepting the Ultimate Icon Award. The actor-comedian expressed gratitude for the 'second chance' he was given after suffering a brain bleed, which led to a stroke, in 2023. 'I gotta be honest, when I saw the 'In Memoriam,' I was like, 'Man, that could have been me,'' Foxx told the audience. 'But I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance, I'm not going to turn down. I'm not going to turn down. I have so much love to give. I told Him, I said, 'Man, bro. Just give me one more crack at this. And I promise,' I said, 'Whatever reason you put this on me, I promise, I'mma do right.' The Ray star went on to thank his two daughters. 'My beautiful daughter Corinne, I cannot say enough about you,' he said of his eldest. 'You've always taken the backseat to everything, but when you needed to drive it, you drove. And you made sure I was here. And I ain't going to turn down. And I'm not going to stop crying. At a certain point, I'm going to stop crying, but I ain't going to stop just yet.' Foxx then spoke of Anelise, his younger daughter. 'Anelise Estelle Fox. My baby with the big hair,' he continued. 'She hides under that hair because she's got something special. You're so beautiful, man. When I was fighting for my life in there, I got to say this. They said, 'We're going to lose him because his vitals are bad.' And I didn't want my 14-year-old to see me like that. But Anelise overheard the conversation and she snuck into my hospital room with her guitar and said, 'I know what my Daddy needs.'' While accepting the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Doechii took the opportunity to address what was 'happening right now, outside of the building.' The awards show was held at the Peacock Theater, located in downtown Los Angeles, where protesters have been demonstrating against the Trump administration's recent immigration raids. 'There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,' the Alligator Bites Never Heal rapper said. '[President] Trump is using military forces to stop a protest. And I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us.' The first-time BET winner urged audiences to speak up against hate. 'People are being swept up and torn from their families, and I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,' she said. 'For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza. We all deserve to live in hope, and not in fear. And I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate and we protest against it.' Though she did not walk the red carpet, Mariah Carey hit the stage for an unforgettable performance of 'Type Dangerous,' the leading single off her forthcoming 16th studio album. She then launched into her 2005, Grammy-nominated track 'It's Like That.' Carey, who received the BET Ultimate Icon Award alongside Snoop Dogg, Jamie Foxx and Kirk Franklin, wore a metallic gold minidress with a structured bodice and ruffled skirt during her performance. Leon Thomas was honored with the Best New Artist award. The 31-year-old singer-songwriter, who previously starred on Nickelodeon's Victorious, released his second studio album Mutt in 2024. 'My grandfather always used to tell me, 'Music is a team sport,' and I want to thank God first and foremost for coaching my life,' Thomas said, before thanking his mother. 'We've been in this together my entire life and I wouldn't be here without you, mom.' Also accepting the Ultimate Icon Award was Snoop Dogg, who took the opportunity to honor his wife, Shante Broadus, whom he married in 1997. 'Now, you see, this is why I'm so rock solid,' he said of Broadus. 'This is why I'm able to deal with all the things that I'm able to deal with. I got God in my life, and I got a queen in my life, right. And no matter what, she held me down, she holds me down. She's been there for me. She's always been my everything.'

Doechii blasts Trump, federal response amid LA protests

Hollywood is speaking out after mass protests in Los Angeles over federal immigration enforcement erupted over the weekend. While attending the 2025 BET Awards at LA's Peacock Theater, rap star Doechii used her acceptance speech to address the controversial demonstrations. "There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order," said Doechii, 26. "Trump is using military forces to stop a protest." Tensions escalated June 8 after President Donald Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops on June 7, prompting backlash from public officials, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who said Trump's actions "flamed the fires" and that Trump "illegally acted to federalize the National Guard." ICE is carrying out a directive from President Trump to find immigrants living in the United States without legal status. The protests have sprung up against the sweeps the agency is carrying out in various neighborhoods. The federal response similarly prompted backlash from celebrities, who accused the administration of inciting the very violence it claimed to be addressing. Several stars have taken to social media to share information and resources, as well as to criticize the government's response to what they called peaceful protests. Celebrities tell all about aging, marriage and Beyoncé in these 10 bingeable memoirs Doechii, who won best female hip-hop artist at the BET Awards, shared her criticism of the Trump administration's response to the immigration protests in her acceptance speech. "I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?" Doechii said. She continued: "People are being swept up and torn from their families, and I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people: for Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza. We all deserve to live in hope and not in fear. And I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate and we protest against it." On June 8, Billie Eilish's brother and collaborator, Finneas, posted on his Instagram story about the protests, cursing at ICE and sharing that he attended a protest and was immediately met with force. "Tear gassed almost immediately at the very peaceful protest downtown-they're inciting this," wrote the songwriter, an LA native. Fashion designer Jeremy Scott also took to his Instagram story June 8 to call out Trump amid the federal government's response to the protests, suggesting the president's deployment of the National Guard, without city or state officials' request, was a means to changing the narrative behind Trump's recent feud with Elon Musk. Scott said Trump sent the National Guard to "scare peaceful protesters and make it a (national) news story. PR 101 folks." Singer and LA native Chiquis posted an Instagram video June 9, urging protesters to remain peaceful. "Your voice is powerful–use it with purpose. Protest peacefully, stand for justice, but remember: violence dims the light of the message. Stay safe, stay strong, stay united," she captioned the post. "Burning cars, throwing rocks at cops cars, vandalizing our city is NOT going to solve this." She followed the post on her story, sharing a video of demonstrators walking with signs earlier on Sunday, writing: "This is what you call a peaceful protest." Singer and "Mean Girls" star Reneé Rapp took to her Instagram story to curse out ICE, the Trump administration and everyone "complicit in ensuring that this happened," calling the federal response a "disgrace." And former "Catfish" host Kamie Crawford shared a lengthy pair of Instagram stories, expressing her sadness, exhaustion and shame for being less politically vocal as of late, but added, "immigrants are worth fighting for." "Even if you're someone who just wants immigration reform and better checks & balances, I think we can objectively see what's going on & agree that this is not the way. This is inhumane & it's harm," she wrote. "These are our friends, our neighbors, our families, our teachers, our TAXPAYERS. These are people. This isn't right."
