Petition filed in HC against transplantation of 23 trees
The petitioners, Mahesh Deka and Jayanta Gogoi, said in the petition that the transplantation of the trees in the Ambari and Dighalipukhuri area requires monitoring by an appointed tree officer.

Advocate general D Saikia submitted before the court of Chief Justice (Acting) Lanusungkum Jamir and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak that based on telephonic instructions from the executive engineer concerned, the 23 mature trees located in and around the Assam State Museum, opposite the Dighalipukhuri pond, would not be touched in view of the re-alignment design.
He also submitted that he would file an affidavit showing the status of the translocated trees along with photographs.
The court has listed the case for the next hearing on July 22.
The petitioner, Mahesh Deka, last year approached the court by filing a PIL alleging that the state govt decided to construct two arms of the GNB flyover, which is under construction, on the Taybullah Road and West Dighalipukhuri Road, which would require the felling of several centenarian trees.
In Oct-Nov last year, hundreds of people staged a series of protests against the govt's plan to fell the trees for the construction of the flyover.
Following the demonstrations, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that certain modifications to the design and length of the Ambari-Noonmati flyover were made to preserve the tree cover at Dighalipukhuri. He confirmed that the trees would neither be felled nor transplanted.
The GNB flyover connecting Ambari with Noonmati is being constructed at a cost of Rs 852 crore.

Despite warnings by RPSC, attendance still low in exams
Ajmer: Despite making strict rules and issuing warnings to ensure that attendance in its recruitment exams is high, Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) continues to face the problem of a large number of absentees. The secretary of RPSC released a notification on May 9 this year, stating that if a candidate remains absent in two or more recruitment exams, their one-time registration will be blocked. To reopen the registration, a penalty of Rs 750 would have to be paid. A penalty of Rs 1,500 would have to be paid by those who remain absent in four exams. The commission also warned e-mitras against filling applications on behalf of candidates. Efforts were also made to prevent ineligible candidates from filing applications. "The RPSC has to prepare exam halls for a large number of candidates, but when most of them remain absent, it is a waste of money and efforts," said an official of RPSC. However, attendance in recruitment exams conducted by RPSC has not increased as yet. Exams conducted in July and Aug saw low attendance. On Wednesday, the recruitment exam for analyst-cum-programmer and deputy director in department of DOIT &C, for which 7,367 candidates applied, saw only 3,170 in the morning session and 3,157 in the evening session, a 42.85% attendance. In the assistant fisheries development officer exam on July 29, the attendance was only 5.88%: of the 4,118 candidates who applied, only 242 appeared. NSUI holds demonstration to awaken govt on illegal drug trade
Bhopal: NSUI, the Congress party's student wing, held a demonstration on Wednesday, protesting the state govt's inaction while an illegal drugs factory was operating in Islamnagar, on the outskirts of the state capital. NSUI state vice-president Aditya Soni alleged that the drug trade was flourishing right before the eyes of the state govt, while the police and administration were sleeping. On Monday, the factory was raided by the DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) along with the Surat and Mumbai police. They seized drugs worth Rs 162 crore, including 61.2 kg of mephedrone. A massive amount of raw chemicals was also seized by the DRI. NSUI staged a unique demonstration on Wednesday over the running of a drug factory and the obliviousness of the state govt. NSUI workers beat drums and blew whistles to wake the govt from its deep sleep. Soni said, "The illegal factory was spreading this poison of drugs among the youth and students. No one can even say for how long the drug trade was operating in the state capital.
