Function Health buys Ezra, launches full-body scan for a third of the price

CNBC05-05-2025

Blood testing startup Function Health on Monday announced the acquisition of full-body MRI scanning company Ezra and launched a new, 22-minute scan for $499.
Function offers a $499 annual subscription where members complete more than 160 blood tests and track their results over time. The company said adding Ezra's scanning technology to its platform will allow its users to screen for more conditions and access a more complete picture of their health.
"It makes so much sense," Jonathan Swerdlin, the co-founder and CEO of Function, said in an interview. "What labs aren't covering, scans can see, and what scans couldn't touch on, labs cover."
Function and Ezra declined to disclose the financial details of the acquisition.
Before Monday's announcement, Ezra's cheapest offering was a 30-minute scan that cost participants $1,495.
Ezra, founded in 2018, offers a range of full-body MRI scans that can help patients detect cancer and other conditions. The company partners with existing imaging facilities across more than 70 locations in the U.S., according to its website.
Full-body MRI scans have surged in popularity in recent years after celebrities like Kim Kardashian began posting about them on social media. Medical experts have mixed feelings about the screenings, in part because they're expensive, can result in unnecessary care and can cause patients to worry.
Ezra's primary competitor is Prenuvo, another full-body MRI scanning startup. In February, Prenuvo announced that it closed a $120 million funding round, and it also launched a new blood test to provide insights into patients' hormonal, cardiovascular, metabolic and immune health.
Ezra has raised a total of $44 million from investors, while Function has raised a total of $53 million as of June 2024. Function is reportedly seeking more than $200 million in fresh capital at a valuation of around $2 billion, according to a February report from Bloomberg.
Emi Gal, the founder and CEO of Ezra, said he has known Function's Swerdlin for years, and that the two began chatting last year about potentially collaborating through a commercial partnership. Over time, though, he said it became clear that an acquisition ultimately made more sense.
"I'm pinching myself," Gal said in an interview. "This is just a phenomenal outcome."
The company was able to shorten its new scan time to 22 minutes by leveraging artificial intelligence that was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January, Gal said. The AI, as well as Function's "financial prowess," helped reduce the price of the scan to $499, he added.
The new 22-minute scan will be available to Function members starting on Monday. Function does not publicly disclose how many patients subscribe to its platform, but Swerdlin said it's in the "hundreds of thousands."
Dr. Mark Hyman, co-founder and the chief medical officer of Function, said acquiring Ezra was a natural part of Function's evolution.
"What used to be the domain of the wealthy is now accessible to everybody, including comprehensive imaging," Hyman said in an interview. "It truly makes a difference for people and saves lives."

Red Sox' Justin Slaten describes shoulder injury, gives timeline for return

ATLANTA — The Red Sox bullpen took another hit Sunday, but the team is hopeful Justin Slaten's shoulder injury won't be a long-term thing. Boston placed Slaten on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 29, with right shoulder inflammation and recalled Luis Guerrero from the WooSox to take his place. Slaten hasn't pitched since Wednesday in Milwaukee. He described his IL stint, which can expire as soon as May 13, as precautionary. Advertisement 'Having a little bit of fatigue right now,' Slaten said. 'Don't think it's anything super serious but had some stuff nagging for a little bit now and it caught up to me that last little bit in Milwaukee. It's just a matter of getting ahead of it, taking care of it before something major could happen.' Slaten felt tiredness in his shoulder at different points in the last week and took notice of his velocity dropping in his outing Wednesday. His fastball, which has averaged 97 mph this year, was at 95.6 mph. The Red Sox were hopeful two days of rest would help him rebound, but the issue didn't abate. 'He has been grinding through it,' said manager Alex Cora. 'We gave him two days and yesterday he tried to play catch. He wasn't responding well and we have to protect him. Hopefully, something that he can come back right on time when the days are done. But obviously, we're gonna miss him.' As a rookie in 2024, Slaten missed more than a month in July and August with a forearm/elbow issue that he tried to pitch through. This time, he alerted team trainers to his shoulder soreness early in the process, allowing the club to get its arms around how to attack it. Slaten did not have an MRI. Advertisement 'Last year, I had some similar stuff where something had popped up but I didn't feel like it was necessarily affecting the performance,' Slaten said. 'It was more of a management thing. Eventually, it caught up and bit me in the ass so I think this is a matter of the same thing. 'Last year, I ended up missing a little over a month when we didn't think it was that serious. I think we're pretty confident this 15-day stint on the IL will give it plenty of time to calm down and I'll be fine.' With Boston's rotaton scuffling, Cora went to his bullpen early and often throughout May. Slaten, the primary setup man for closer Aroldis Chapman, pitched 13 innings over 12 games in the month, last pitching on back-to-back days Tuesday and Wednesday in losses to the Brewers. With Slaten and veteran Liam Hendriks (hernia-related issues) both now on the IL and Guerrero and Nick Burdi both called up, the group looks different than it did a week ago. Cora identified lefty Justin Wilson and righties Greg Weissert and Garrett Whitlock as eighth-inning options in Slaten's absence. Slaten has pitched well for Boston outside of a couple blow-up outings. He owns a 3.47 ERA (and 3.17 FIP) while striking out 16 batters in 23 ⅓ innings over 24 games. He had a string of 10 straight scoreless appearances dating back to May 4. More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Levi Wright's Mom and Dad Held the 3-Year-Old as He Died After Toy Tractor Accident: 'You Stayed with Us 17 Minutes'

Kallie Wright is speaking out on the anniversary of 3-year-old son Levi Wright's death In May 2024, Levi, whom Kallie shares with rodeo star Spencer Wright, was hospitalized after driving his toy tractor into a river and then was taken off life support about two weeks later "Our love for you is stronger than ever," Kallie wrote in a new Instagram post on Monday, June 2Levi Wright's mom is remembering her son on the 1-year anniversary of his accidental death. 'A year ago today we held you as you took your last breaths,' Kallie Wright wrote on Monday, June 2, in a post on Instagram alongside a photo of her and her husband with Levi in his hospital bed. The 3-year-old, whom Kallie shares with rodeo star Spencer Wright, was removed from life support last year about two weeks after he drove a toy tractor into the water while playing at his Utah home in May 2024, authorities and his family have said. 'They said it could take a day or 2, I was so scared I wouldnt be holding you when you left and that was so important to me. You stayed with us 17 minutes," Kallie wrote in her tribute on Monday. 'As you left an overwhelming feeling came over me & I knew we had done right by you," she continued. "For me this isnt the day you fully left us but the day it became official. Levi we talk about and think of you everyday. We live for you! Our love for you is stronger than ever." Since Levi's death, his family has supported The Levi Wright Foundation, "where we hope to help families that face similar unimaginable situations in his memory," according to the organization's Facebook page. The foundation is also organizing a charity barrel race next month. Levi was initially hospitalized in critical condition and in the coming days, his mom shared numerous updates on her son's progress — both hopeful at times and heartbreaking at others. On May 26, 2024, five days after the incident, Kallie wrote in a Facebook post that the family was "taking it day by day" after receiving MRI results that left them feeling "shattered." Although they did try to wean Levi off sedation, he wasn't able to handle it and on June 2, 2024, Kallie announced that "after several sleepless nights, lots of research, multiple conversations with the world's best neurologists & millions of prayers," the family knew it was "time." 'Levi showed us just enough to buy us time for all of this,' she wrote then. 'We prayed those things were him defying odds & proving to us that he wanted to stay here but we see now he wanted to give us time to find peace with letting him go." On the one-month anniversary of Levi's death, Kallie — who is also mom to daughters Steeley and Brae Milo — reflected on her love for her son and shared some advice for other parents. 'Don't just take your kids to do fun things, do those fun things WITH them! Get in the pool, get on the swing, go down the slide, run through the sprinklers, sled down the hill etc. You get the idea!' she wrote while encouraging families to get professional photos taken more often. 'Kids grow way too fast and things are always changing,' she wrote. 'I wanted to wait until I lost the baby weight & this and that and now the only really good pics I have are from Brae's newborn session and his dad wasn't able to be there. I wish I had done some this spring.' Another important lesson? 'Everything and I mean everything is fixable and replaceable, so don't make mountains out of molehills,' she wrote. 'I have a throw pillow on my couch with little slits of when Levi got ahold of scissors, little Easter bunny stamps on my wall in the play room,' she continued. 'I realize now I definitely over reacted & I could have talked to him about it without being mad and frustrated.' Kallie ended that post with gratitude for her son. 'Thanks for being my adventure buddy Levi & for teaching me so much!' she wrote. 'I miss & love you!' In a separate post days after Levi died, Kallie wrote candidly about her grief and how she would "lose sleep over this for eternity." "1. I am not a perfect mom but I am a good mom. 2. My little boy loved me with all he had. 3. Never say never because it only takes seconds and it can happen to you too," she wrote. "I pray anyone who judges me or has hurtful words to say never finds themself on the receiving end of a nightmare like this." Read the original article on People
