Umkhumbane Classic FC 2025 campaign kicks off on the right foot
Coach Jabulani Zuke said the Mayville club, which has players from under-13 to under-17 as well as an open side, is on track to dribble the opposition on field with the boys showing 'great determination and focus' at the Durban Central LFA (DCLFA) Selection Tournament where six of their players caught the eyes of the scouts and were asked to return for vetting this Saturday.
'The boys played well at the tournament and tried their level best, which made me very proud. We were knocked out in the semi-final against KwaZulu-Natal Academy, but I am happy to see how far we have come as a team,' said Zuke.
Starting off in 2013 as Super Angel FC, the young side merged with Umkhumbane Classic in 2021 to form a bigger club. The team trains from Tuesday to Friday from 16:00 to 18:00, and they are looking to spread their wings by forming a formidable girls soccer team. 'At the moment we have four girls who are part of the club but we are looking for more female players to be able to form a team,' said Zuke. He said the club also focuses on youth development.

'Every Sunday before we play our matches, the players attend Umkhumbi Life Skills, which is a programme run by Sizwe Mthembu that is designed to guide the youth towards the right path in life. We want to give our young players a chance, on and off the field, by showing them the direction that they need to go to achieve their goals.'
A former player himself, Zuke said young people can easily be drawn into the wrong life. 'There are so many social ills out there, and we do not want these young boys and girls to be taken in by what they see as a fast way of making money. Sport, especially soccer, it teaches you discipline and how to stay focused. There are better role models in the game and within our community; we need to show them to our youngsters by encouraging them to be more active and getting involved in community-enriching projects such as this,' said Zuke.
As the team kicks off the season, Zuke said they are still looking for sponsors and volunteers to help push the club to greater heights. For more information or to join Umkhumbane Classic Football Club, contact Zuke on 061 449 6935.

F1 film puts viewers in the driver's seat for a tale of second chances
Brad Pitt is itching to return to racing tracks after making F1, a movie that takes audiences into the action of real Formula One races and mixes in romance and humour. Directed and co-written by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski, F1 was partly filmed during Formula One Grand Prix weekends, with scenes shot on the circuits during breaks and real drivers also appearing on screen. Pitt plays an unruly racer-for-hire who returns to Formula One to help his friend's struggling team and mentor its rookie driver, played by Damson Idris. Pitt and Idris did their own driving in the movie, combining top speeds with acting. The aim for authenticity made the project physically testing for the two. "It's real. You got to put in the neck exercises. And we're not even pulling the Gs the real guys are doing," Pitt said at the film's European premiere in London on Monday. "I was in the gym a lot. It was cold plunges afterwards for recovery," Pitt, 61, said. "It's insane," Idris said in an interview. "You're driving up to 290km/h at times. I have to say the lines at a specific place and I have to emote in a way that's going to translate through the eyes at those speeds. When you watch the film, you feel you're driving as a viewer, and that was our intention." Getting the balance right for viewers with varying levels of familiarity with the sport was also key, said Kosinski. "If you're a diehard Formula One fan, you're going to find some Easter eggs, you're going to recognise some historical stuff I think will be interesting. But we also designed the movie so that if you know nothing about Formula One, if you have no interest in motor sports whatsoever, this is a great story about second chances, teamwork and friendship," he said. Monday's premiere came days after Pitt drove a Formula One car for real after testing a McLaren at Austin's Circuit of the Americas. The cars used in the film were Formula Two cars, modified to look like real grand prix racers. "Ask me how fast I went. It was 5km/h short of 320km/h," Pitt said of the experience. "I want to go back. I want to hit 320km/h."

Great start to Classic season
AFTER a strong start to their 2025/26 campaign, the U17 and U15 teams of Umkhumbane Classic Football Club are sitting on top of the Cato Manor League logs in the Durban Local Football Association. Coach Jabulani Zuke said that this is a first for the Mayville club which is nurturing young talent for the big leagues. Zuke said the U17 boys, who are playing in the Open Division, have stunned a number of teams in the league, which has resulted in them amassing 13 points in five games with Bonela United hot on their heels with 11 points. With nine games left in the league and at the rate that the boys are playing, Zuke said they have a strong chance to win the league. 'We are dreaming a possible dream right now,' said Zuke. 'Winning the league won't be easy, but it is possible. Our target is 40 points. Although we have 13 points right now, if we can win the remaining nine games then the league is ours.' With top scorers Wandile Makhathini and Mthokozisi Ndaba scoring in several games, Umkhumbane Classic have won two of their three games, drawing one. The team is in top position on the log with seven points. 'We have set the standard and the bar very high. They are young boys but are playing with great skill. If they can keep this up for the rest of the season we will most definitely be lifting the cup. The entire team is flying the Umkhumbane Classic flag high,' said Zuke. He said the team has been working hard to stay true to their goal and remain game focussed. 'We fully understand that the upcoming games are going to be hard, but we are determined that nobody will stand in our way. We do not want to drop any points. I'm very specific in my approach to games, and our style of play it is something to be talked about,' said Zuke. The team that starts every match with a prayer began as Super Angel FC in 2013 and merged with Umkhumbane Classic in 2021. The team trains from Tuesday to Friday, 16:00 to 18:00.
