Odisha vigilance seizes Rs 1.44 crore cash, gold from Jeypore forest officer's flat
KORAPUT: Vigilance officials on Friday seized over Rs 1.44 crore in cash, four gold biscuits, and 16 gold coins (each weighing 10 grams) from the flat of Rama Chandra Nepak, the deputy ranger of Jeypore forest range in Koraput district, on charges of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
According to Vigilance sources, simultaneous raids were conducted at six locations linked to Nepak across Koraput and Bhubaneswar. The operation involved six DSPs, five inspectors, and nine assistant sub-inspectors.
Officials said further details are awaited as searches are still underway.
The properties being searched include a building constructed on paternal land at NKT Road in Jeypore, two flats in Jeypore town, a flat owned by his brother at UMS Bhagabati Mansion in Bhubaneswar, his in-laws' residence at Sombar Tota in Jeypore, and his office chamber.
A Vigilance release revealed that Nepak, began his career as a village forest worker in 1989 under the Social Forestry Wing of the Koraput Division. Following the merger of the Social Forestry and Territorial Forest Divisions, he was transferred to the Jeypore Forest Division.
He is currently posted as Deputy Ranger-cum-in-charge Ranger of the Jeypore Forest Range. His gross monthly salary is Rs 76,880, with a net salary of Rs 69,680, the release stated.
The Vigilance department has initiated further investigation to assess the full extent of assets accumulated.

R-Infra denies fund diversion allegations as ED summons Anil Ambani
Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Infrastructure (R-Infra) has denied allegations of fund diversion as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned Anil Ambani on Friday (1 August), according to PTI. 'The company wishes to clarify today's media reports pertaining to an over 10-year-old matter regarding the alleged diversion of Rs 10,000 crore to an undisclosed related party, when the exposure, as per the disclosures in the company's financial statements, is only around Rs 6,500 crore,' R-Infra stated. The company further stated that it had a net exposure of Rs 6,500 crore, which was duly disclosed in its financial statements over the past four years, and that it had publicly disclosed this matter on February 9, 2025. 'Reliance Infrastructure diligently pursued the recovery of its dues in this matter. Through mandatory mediation proceedings conducted by a retired Supreme Court judge and the mediation award filed before the Hon'ble Bombay High Court, Reliance Infrastructure arrived at a settlement to recover its 100 per cent exposure of Rs 6,500 crore,' the company said. Earlier, in February, R-Infra settled a dispute with CLE Private Limited (CPL)—formerly Crest Logistics and Engineers Private Limited, an unlisted private company—for an agreement of Rs 6,503.13 crore. In August 2023, R-Infra initiated pre-institution mediation proceedings against CLE Private Limited for 'recovery of a sum of Rs 130 billion and 250 million, along with interest thereon' before the concerned authority of the Bombay High Court in Mumbai. The dispute was resolved through mediation at the Bombay High Court. The consent terms under the mediation application were submitted to the mediation centre at the court in compliance with the provisions of the Mediation Act, 2023, to resolve the dispute. Last month, the ED raided more than 35 premises and searched over 50 companies in New Delhi and Mumbai linked to the Reliance Anil Ambani Group (RAAGA). The investigation was related to the alleged illegal diversion of loans. 'Further, Mr. Anil D. Ambani has not been on the Board of Reliance Infrastructure for more than three years, i.e., since March 2022,' R-Infra noted.

7 ride one scooter in Odisha, fined Rs 21,500 after video goes viral: ‘6 of them were minors'
In a dangerous and bizarre breach of traffic rules, seven youngsters were caught cramming onto a single scooter and recklessly speeding through the streets of Odisha's Sambalpur late Sunday night. Their antics, captured on video, quickly went viral on social media and prompted swift police action. The group was seen riding at high speed, shouting obscenities, and creating a public disturbance. After being alerted by the viral clip, police reviewed CCTV footage to trace the vehicle. The rider was detained, the scooter seized, and a fine of Rs 21,500 was imposed, as per The Times of India. The report also said six of the seven were found to be minors. A post shared by Brut India (@ TOI quoted Ramdas Tudu, RTO (Sambalpur), as saying, 'Dhanupali police informed us about the incident. We have penalised them of Rs 21,500. We are requesting people not to break traffic rules and or do stunts.' Tophan Bag, the SDPO, told TOI, 'We got the video around 11:30pm on Sunday where seven were riding a single scooter recklessly while shouting in filthy language. As per the instruction of SP, Dhanupali and Khetrajpur police started tracking the vehicle and traced the scooter.' The video of the incident has gone viral, and has sparked outrage online. One user commented, 'Is there any medium to report such peanuts riding bikes and scooty in very high speeds without any protective gear, risking lives of many? Coz I see many around me and despite the urge to stop and hit them, I can't coz then I'll be the culprit.' Another user wrote, 'We don't need to pay taxes.. you can recover all of the money from the fines itself from various sectors.' A third user took a dig, writing, 'They were practicing for the 26th January parade.' Some also raised questions about policy enforcement, with one commenter saying, 'Why govt not cancelling license because two wheller company will say our turnover is going down.' According to Brut India, Odisha saw a whopping 5.6 million e-challans issued in 2024, collecting over Rs 2,398 crore in fines, a staggering figure that highlights both the scale of traffic violations and the state's growing digital enforcement.

CCB seizes 123 kg of ganja; three arrested in Dakshina Kannada
Karnataka, Aug 1 (PTI) A large cache of ganja weighing 123 kg was seized by the Mangaluru City Crime Branch in a major crackdown on narcotics smuggling, with three individuals arrested for allegedly transporting the contraband from Andhra Pradesh. Acting on a tip-off, CCB officials intercepted two cars near Mathadakere in Kantavar Cross, located in Beluvai village of Moodbidri taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, on Thursday. The contraband was reportedly being smuggled across state borders, they said. The arrested individuals have been identified as Masood M K (45), Mohammed Ashiq (24), and Subair (30), all residents of Kasaragod district in Kerala, officials added. In addition to the cannabis, officials also seized two vehicles—one registered in Karnataka and the other in Kerala—and five mobile phones. The total value of the seized goods is estimated at Rs 46.2 lakh.
