Paramount Global Ex-CEO Bob Bakish Walks Away With Almost $87M; George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy And Brian Robbins Each Net Between $19.5M And $22.2M In 2024

The three occupants of Paramount Global's Office of the CEO did well for themselves financially in 2024, but the biggest payday went to ex-CEO Bob Bakish.
George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins collected $22.2 million, $19.5 million and $19.6 million, respectively, according to an SEC filing by the company on Friday. Bakish took home just shy of $87 million, including about $69 million in severance.)

The compensation figures come as talks are continuing between Paramount Global and the Federal Communications Commission, which is reviewing the proposed merger of Paramount and Skydance Media. The FCC has made it plain that it wants Paramount and other media companies to roll back their diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. Unwinding the DEI programs put in place across corporate America in recent years has been a major priority of President Donald Trump and appointees like FCC Chair Brendan Carr. Trump has also filed a $20 billion lawsuit in Texas against Paramount, citing CBS News and 60 Minutes, but Carr has maintained that the FCC review is separate from that case.
Bakish was removed as CEO in April 2024 and the company created the Office of the CEO after clashing with Paramount chair and controlling shareholder Shari Redstone. Cheeks, McCarthy and Robbins have continued to oversee divisions of the company in addition to fulfilling their Co-CEO duties. In the Skydance deal announced last summer, Redstone's privately held National Amusements will be acquired by Skydance, which will then merge with all of Paramount. The companies have said the transaction would close by the first half of 2025, but that timetable has come into question in recent weeks.
The framework for Bakish's severance payment had been disclosed, but the final number was determined based on a range of performance-based metrics. In 2023, Bakish's total payday was $31.3 million.
Christa D'Alimonte, who departed last June as EVP and General Counsel, collected $8.9 million in 2024, including about $4 million in severance.

Why EchoStar Plunged Again Today

Following last week's decline on a missed interest payment, EchoStar missed a second one today. The FCC is currently reviewing whether the company has been adequately utilizing its spectrum. Elon Musk's SpaceX would like to use the spectrum, and is making a case that EchoStar has violated its agreement with the government. 10 stocks we like better than EchoStar › Shares of telecom and satellite TV provider EchoStar (NASDAQ: SATS) plunged another 11.3% on Tuesday. The decline followed a 12.1% decline last Friday, followed by another single-digit decline yesterday. Last week's decline came after the company announced it would not be making another interest payment on its debt, which is secured by a telecommunications spectrum that is currently a point of controversy. Then today, the company announced it would also not make a second interest payment that was due -- but this time, part of the debt in question was unsecured, raising even more questions. No investor likes to hear about missed interest payments, which is likely why the stock fell yet again. On May 9, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sent a letter to EchoStar saying that some of its spectrum is now under review. EchoStar bought this wireless spectrum years ago, with an agreement that it would use the spectrum to build out a 5G network across the U.S. to add competition in the wireless telecom market. EchoStar thus far hasn't gotten the network up and running in the time it was supposed to, but was granted an extension last year under the prior administration. However, the new FCC director is now saying that extension is being reviewed. Elon Musk's SpaceX also submitted a complaint, as it would like to use the spectrum itself. In the meantime, it appears EchoStar is refusing to pay interest on its secured debt until that review is complete. On Friday, the company said it was skipping a $326 million interest payment. Then Tuesday, the company said it would be skipping another $183 million payment due today. Interestingly, a portion of the interest today was on unsecured notes, which means the interest payments weren't necessarily tied to assets such as the spectrum or physical assets. This means the company isn't just withholding payments tied to the specific spectrum in question, but that it's not making interest payments in general. That's a more worrying sign, which suggests EchoStar's current business model could become stressed if the government decides to seize the spectrum. The company claims it has been building out a 5G network as it tries to grow its Boost Mobile wireless business, since its satellite pay-TV business is in decline. As of now, the company isn't technically in default, as all the notes have a 30-day grace period for EchoStar to actually make the payment. The company appears to think the matter with the FCC will be resolved within that time frame; however, that's also out of the company's control. If the FCC grants an extension, it could lead to upside in the stock, due to a relief rally. Still, given the uncertainty around that decision, as well as EchoStar's declining overall business, this is a situation I'd stay away from until there's more clarity. FCC investigation looms over EchoStar's missed interest payments and a new satellite

EchoStar is skipping interest payments even as it commissions a new Dish TV satellite — citing 'uncertainty' caused by a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) probe. The company just missed a $183 million interest payment, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. It missed another $326 million interest payment, Bloomberg reported on Friday. It's potentially setting itself up for bankruptcy protection, SpaceNews reports. It's potentially setting itself up for bankruptcy protection While those payments are on hold, EchoStar, which Dish Network rejoined last year, is still investing in its TV business. It commissioned a new communications satellite for television, Maxar Space Systems announced yesterday. The satellite, EchoStar XXVI, is supposed to be completed by 2028 to support Dish TV coverage across 50 US states and Puerto Rico. The FCC is investigating whether EchoStar is hitting requirements to deploy 5G that it's supposed to meet in order to keep its spectrum licenses. Dish Network merged back with EchoStar — which also owns Boost Mobile — to try to compete in 5G, with the goal of trying to become a competitor with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The FCC probe has led EchoStar to 'freeze its decision-making' for Boost Mobile, the Wall Street Journal reports. SpaceX is also a rival vying with EchoStar for spectrum licenses in the 2 GHz band. Elon Musk's company conducted its own analysis of Dish's cellular signals and called EchoStar's use of the gigahertz band 'de minimis at best' in an April filing to the FCC. EchoStar accused SpaceX of a 'land grab' for spectrum the Wall Street Journal reported last month.
