‘Doctor Who' Might Bring Back David Tennant to Meet Billie Piper Again

Gizmodo4 hours ago

It's never a good idea to put too much trust in rumors. But considering there were rumors online that correctly predicted how Ncuti Gatwa's run on Doctor Who would end—with the Fifteenth Doctor regenerating into someone who looked a lot like former companion Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper—you can't rule them out, either. The latest suggests that Piper's return may be for a special purpose: a standalone special that would reunite her with former co-star David Tennant.
This speculation was reported by UK papers the Mirror and the Sun, the latter of which which cites an unnamed source teasing 'talk about a possible one-off project to celebrate the 20th anniversary' of the BBC's revival of Doctor Who in 2005.
This story couldn't be more vague (the Sun piece goes on to note that 'there have been some ideas floated about, with the thought of maybe bringing David and Billie back together for one last hurrah') and obviously nothing official has been confirmed. The Sun's unnamed source also suggests this potential special could reunite Piper (as Rose) and Tennant (as the version of the Doctor that bi-generated in the 60th anniversary special then settled in with Catherine Tate's Donna Noble and her family).
The timing of this rumor comes as Doctor Who fans are wondering what lies ahead for the long-running sci-fi show, which has yet to announce any future plans following Gatwa's final episode. That includes whether or not the BBC and Disney will continue to collaborate on its production; whether or not Russell T Davies would remain as showrunner; and just what Piper's appearance at the end of 'The Reality War' actually means—is she the Sixteenth Doctor? And if not, uh, what is she then?
The idea of a Piper-Tennant reunion special would make sense in some ways. Tennant is such a beloved Doctor that he's played two different iterations of the character already, and even though the Fourteenth Doctor is still a very recent memory, most fans would still welcome him back a third time, especially if it means a re-team with Rose.
It could be the right move for a show that's navigating some rocky territory at the moment. Or, it could just be a wild rumor that amounts to nothing. What do you think about a Tennant-Piper reunion as the next step for Doctor Who?

As the Beckham family feud rages on, one son just made a personal decision: report

Deep sigh. Romeo Beckham was single for a hot minute, and now has possibly moved on. David and Victoria' Beckham's middle son, 22, was just spotted with a gorgeous woman in Paris, days after reports he had split with Kim Turnbull. The latter relationship was apparently one of the catalysts for a feud currently simmering within the famous English family who lives in Miami part time. According to widespread media reports, Turnbull used to have a little something something with Romeo's older brother Brooklyn, 26. Despite being happily married to Nicola Peltz, the aspiring chef understandably didn't want to have to hang with the London-based DJ when the whole gang got together. OK, so Turnbull isn't the only cause of the alleged friction. We hear that Victoria and Peltz are not exactly besties, with problems dating back to the 'Transformers' star's 2022 wedding to the ex Spice Girl's eldest in Palm Beach. The fact that the socialite chose to wear Valentino apparently didn't sit well with her mother-in-law, a haute designer. Whatever caused the drama, and if it's still ongoing is unclear. But we do know Brooklyn recently covered up his 'Mama's Boy' chest tattoo with flowers. Ouch. Back to Romeo and his sitch: TMZ identifies his new ladyfriend as Caroline Daur, a German fitness influencer. According to her eponymous website, the 30-year-old is 'a successful self-made entrepreneur and actress' with over 4.6 million followers on Instagram. Time will tell if the Beckhams can heal from the all this tumult. Insiders tell UK's The Sun the soccer icon and former pop star are hoping they can all reunite to celebrate daughter Harper's 14th birthday, which falls on July 10. But another source threw cold water on that theory: 'It doesn't seem likely at the moment.'

Critics hail Celine Song's ‘Materialists' as an ‘exquisitely made' modern love story — not a ‘glossy romantic comedy'

Writer-director Celine Song's sophomore feature, Materialists, may not match the awards buzz of her Oscar-nominated debut, Past Lives, but critics remain impressed with the filmmaker's storytelling prowess. In Materialists, Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, an ambitious New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between the perfect match — the tall, handsome, and wealthy Harry (Pedro Pascal) — and her imperfect ex, John (Chris Evans). Early reviews for the film have been positive, earning it a "certified fresh" rating with an 86 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. "Generally favorable" reviews compiled by Metacritic resulted in an overall score of 73 percent. Caryn James (BBC) wrote, "Materialists is exquisitely made, character-driven and talky, with some glittering dialogue. It's the kind of idiosyncratic film a director sometimes gets to do after a great success and Song makes the most of it." James added that the romantic comedy "is hardly a romcom at all, but something far more original and captivating: a piercingly honest exploration of love and money and the inevitable connection between the two." The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney calls it, "A refreshingly complex look at modern love, self-worth and the challenges of finding a partner in an unaffordable city, which once again treats three points of a romantic triangle with equal integrity and compassion." Variety's Owen Gleiberman wrote, "While it's all too easy to imagine the breezy '90s version of this movie, Materialists is very much not that movie. It's a sharp and serious social romantic drama full of telling observations about the way we live now." William Babbiani of The Wrap warns not to judge the film by its trailer. "It's exceptionally intelligent and biting filmmaking," he writes. "If you go into Materialists expecting a glossy romantic comedy — as the trailer for Materialists strongly implies, cutesy 'Material Girl' cover and all — you may emerge deeply disappointed. If you go in expecting a pointed exploration of the commodification of modern romance, you may be deeply impressed." Not all reviews for Materialists, however, are glowing. Kristen Lopez (The Film Maven) wrote, "Materialists is as shallow as its characters, but so desperately wants to think it isn't. The script is all over the place, and when it finally settles into a groove there still seems to be pieces missing." Justin Chang of The New Yorker wasn't impressed either, noting, "I don't buy it, Jane Austen wouldn't buy it, and deep down I don't think Song buys it. In attempting to merge escapist pleasures with financial realities, Materialists trips up on its own high-mindedness." Materialists opens in theaters on June 13. The Best Restaurant in the UK Is in One of London's Fanciest Hotels

If you believe classic fine dining is dead, please refer to the latest UK National Restaurant Awards rankings. The Ritz London, one of the world's more classically elegant dining rooms, where chandeliers cascade from the high ceilings and the mirrored walls and sweeping shades look like they were borrowed from Versailles, ranked No. 1 on the list, which was released on Monday night. It moved up a dozen places from No. 13 last year.
