Fork in the road for staying prospect at Rosehill
A son of 2013 Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente, Fioprospero only joined the team of trainer Matt Smith at the start of his current preparation, and he's done nothing but please his trainer.
'I went through his form and watched his tapes when I got him, my first thoughts were he'll stay this horse, and he looks like a stayer,' Smith said.
'The more we've done with him the more he's impressed me.
'I like him as a horse. He's a good style of a horse, got a good brain on him and he's always worked well.'
Fioprospero heads into his upcoming assignment off an unlucky second at the same track over 2000 metre three weeks ago.
This time the four-year-old gelding steps up to the 2400m trip for the first time in his career when he tackles the Mostyn Coopper Benchmark 78 Handicap (2400m).
'He's going great,' Smith said.
'You never know until they do it but he gives me every indication he's going to run the trip.
Last start he was badly held up in the straight, lost momentum but when he got into the clear he closed off so to be able to pick himself up, dust himself off and still find the line is a good indicator he might get further.
'This is the right race to try.'
Fioprospero is an $8.50 chance with TAB.com.au while his last start conqueror Good Banter is the $4.40 favourite.
'If he shows us he can run the mile and a half on Saturday, it's going to open up plenty more options for the horse going forward,' he said.
'He has the makings of being a nice horse for the stable in the new season.'
Meanwhile, Smith also revealed his big spring hopefuls Headwater and Waltham have returned to work as they continue to build towards their spring campaigns.
Headwater has The Everest aspirations and the plan is to resume in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick on September 6 while Waltham is chasing a berth in the Melbourne Cup.

Jimmy Orman delighted to watch history-making Angela Jones win Brisbane jockeys' title
Jimmy Orman would have won his fourth consecutive Brisbane riding title if he hadn't seized the opportunity of a lifetime in Hong Kong, but he is chuffed that Angela Jones got to walk in his premiership footsteps. Orman is back in Queensland on a family holiday and has been paying notice to the final stages of the premiership race with Jones warding off great mate Emily Lang to make history as the first female jockey to score the Brisbane premiership. If Orman hadn't been snapped up in Hong Kong, he would have scored his fourth successive Brisbane title as he already had 45 winners under his belt for the Brisbane season before heading off in February. Orman will soon be back riding in Hong Kong, where he is contracted until February, but is chuffed that Jones and Lang fought out the riding title. 'Ange is a great rider and so is Emily and both have ridden really well this season,' Orman said. 'When I first started riding in Brisbane I was already noticing the increase in female riders, especially in the apprentice ranks. 'Back then there were also a lot of girls who were going to be apprentice jockeys, but they didn't end up riding for one reason or another. 'It's great to see these girls riding so well for a leading stable, with Tony Gollan, and I think Ange is a deserving winner. 'I had been going for four (premierships) but I upped and left. 'It's superb to see a female jockey has won the title for the first time.' Champion Queensland trainer Gollan said it was hardly a surprise that history was made at Doomben. 'This was always going to be a matter of when, not if,' Gollan said. 'There has been this emergence (of female jockeys) going on for some time. 'It's terrific for both of these girls, they have both had breakout seasons, and it's really good for racing. 'My stable has always been receptive to using female jockeys, even going right back to when I trained in Toowoomba.' Queensland Racing Minister Tim Mander was thrilled with the fabulous racing milestone. 'This is an historic moment in Queensland racing,' Mander said. 'While there can only be one winner, I'd like to congratulate both Angela and Emily on terrific seasons in the saddle. 'I hope their achievements inspire other young women to pursue their dreams in the industry.' Meanwhile, Orman will soon return to Hong Kong where he hopes to build his connections after already riding 13 winners there. He was initially snapped up by the Hong Kong Jockey Club after several jockeys suffered injuries in a fall. But he has made the most of his opportunities there and wants to try to make it a longer-term stint. 'It's a good lifestyle and it's great racing, so I will try and stay as long as I can while I'm doing well,' Orman said. 'It will be better for me when I go back this time, because I now know more about how the system works. 'I don't want to set my goals too high, I just want to try to stay consistent and build more connections. 'If you can ride winners you can stay, that seems to be how it works.'

Blake Shinn holds off Craig Williams to win 2024-25 Melbourne jockeys' premiership
The last metropolitan race of the season turned out to be a metaphor of the Melbourne jockeys' premiership battle for champion rider Craig Williams. Williams put up a strong fight in the last months of the season but was unable to reel in reigning Scobie Breasley Medallist Blake Shinn, missing the opportunity to join record holder Damien Oliver on 10 Melbourne jockeys' premierships. Shinn led Williams by seven wins at the start of Wednesday's Sandown meeting but neither rider added to their tally on the final metropolitan race day of 2024/25. Williams had eight rides at Sandown but was narrowly denied a consolation win in the last race when his mount Makdane was shaded on the line by $41 outsider Superstock. Shinn finished the season on 74 wins to Williams' 67 but the latter topped the Melbourne prizemoney tally with his 381 mounts reaping more than $12.9m on city tracks. Daniel Stackhouse was third on 48 wins. Shinn's premiership triumph was his third in Melbourne while he is the only jockey to have won Melbourne and Sydney jockey's titles, winning the Sydney crown in 2007/08. Shinn will also claim the Victorian Jockeys' Premiership, which includes metropolitan and provincial wins after Thursday's season finale at Sale.
