It's the first-ever meeting between Florida and South Alabama, which moved up to the FBS level in 2013. The Jaguars went 7-6 last season under first-year coach Major Applewhite, capped by a 30-23 win over Western Michigan in the Salute to Veterans Bowl.
Florida Atlantic went 3-9 last season under Tom Herman, who was fired during the offseason and replaced by new coach and former Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley.
UF's non-conference schedule in 2025 includes games against Long Island University, USF, Miami and Florida State. The Gators will open the season at The Swamp against LIU on Aug. 30.

Bucs' Teddy Bridgewater defends actions in high school coaching suspension: 'I just tried to protect them'
Teddy Bridgewater appeared to stand by his decisions as head football coach of Miami Northwestern High School, which ultimately resulted in the NFL quarterback being suspended after leading the team to a state championship. Speaking to the media on Wednesday after signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, Bridgewater explained his thought process behind the events that led to his suspension last month. "Honestly, I think everyone knows that I'm just a cheerful guy, a cheerful giver as well. I'm a protector. I'm a father first before anything," he began. "When I decided to coach, those players became my sons and I wanted to make sure that I just protect them in the best way that I can. I think that's what came about." Bridgewater was suspended last month for providing players with financial benefits – something he previously said he has informed the school about. In a post on Facebook last month, he explained that he personally funded uber rides, meal costs and physical therapy treatment for the team. He reached out on social media asking for donations "so I no longer have to take from my personal funds to keep smiles on these young men's faces and remind them that they matter." Bridgewater was later suspended, a decision that came months after he led the school to a Class 3A state championship in the fall. On Wednesday, Bridgewater doubled down on the sentiment. "Miami Northwestern is in a tough neighborhood, and sometimes things can happen when kids are walking home and different things like that. So, I just tried to protect them, give them a ride home instead of them having to take those dangerous walks. I just want people to continue to see me for the person that I've been from the time I arrived in the NFL, from the time that I arrived at the University of Louisville – just a humble guy who has a big heart and a cheerful giver." Now that he's back in the league after previously coming out of retirement in December to join the Detroit Lions in their playoff pursuit, Bridgewater said he hopes he can continue to serve as an inspiration to his players. "He's showing us that he can make it to the NFL, he's showing us that he can coach, he's showing us that there are different avenues of life that you can take, and I'm hoping that they're taking notice of that."

Jaguars to play starters, including rookie Travis Hunter, in preseason opener against the Steelers
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter will make his professional debut playing both sides of the ball. Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen said Thursday that Hunter and most of the team's other starters will play in their preseason opener against Pittsburgh on Saturday night. 'Everybody's going to play in this game,' Coen said. "A lot of the guys want to play. Two new systems on both sides of the ball. ... You can do whatever you want, but everything leans that way in probably being the best thing for our team right now." The Steelers have not announced whether they will play any starters. Coen said he planned to connect with Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin later Thursday to share his plan. Coen said quarterback Trevor Lawrence, center Robert Hainsey and others expressed a desire to be on the field in at least the first preseason game. Lawrence hasn't taken a snap in a live-ball situation since sustaining a concussion against Houston in early December; he had season-ending shoulder surgery soon thereafter. 'I'll be excited to get back out there,' Lawrence said. 'It's been a while, so anytime you can play — even preseason — it means something to get on that field.' Lawrence is learning his third offensive system in five NFL seasons and has two new receivers — including Hunter — as well as two new offensive line starters. The Jaguars even have several new faces on defense, too. 'All of that is kind of what points to (playing)," Coen said. "Look, if we had three (joint practices) and two days of work (within) each of those joints, we probably wouldn't be playing (starters). That's just kind of where we're at. We've got to go and probably take advantage of these opportunities." All eyes will be on Lawrence and Hunter, who is trying to become the most diverse player in NFL history. The former Colorado star and the second overall pick in the NFL draft is penciled in as a starting slot receiver and a backup cornerback in Jacksonville. Hunter started switching sides of the ball in practice last week, the latest expansion of his dual role. 'He wants to prove people wrong," fellow cornerback Jourdan Lewis said. "I feel like that's the type of mindset you have to have to go and be awesome and a competitor out here. Of course he has all the skillsets, but I think it's the mental aspect of it that makes him different. "He's going to show you. He's going to try to do it tenfold and put his best foot forward doing both things, and whatever they ask him to do, he's going to do it at full speed. Like I said, his mental fortitude for it is unmatched.' ___ AP NFL:
