Analyst names one Minnesota Vikings tight end as best in NFL in unique skillset

USA Today5 hours ago

The Vikings have prided themselves on loading up their roster with a unique assembly of skill players. They are deep at nearly every position to the point that even the depth players have their own unique assignments.
That leads us to a piece published by ESPN's Bill Barnwell on Thursday, where he labeled the best players in the NFL in unique areas. He broke down the best gunner, blitzing off-ball linebacker, and sixth offensive lineman. Another award he gave out was best blocking tight end, which is where the Vikings came into the mix.
The recently extended Josh Oliver earned that distinction from Barnwell as he backs up the receiving option at the position, T.J. Hockenson.
Barnwell explains, "The numbers back up the idea that Oliver is an elite blocker. He ranked fourth among eligible tight ends in ESPN's run block win rate a year ago, finishing just behind a former teammate in now-Jaguars tight end Johnny Mundt. NFL Next Gen Stats credited Oliver with only two pressures allowed across 55 pass-blocking snaps, producing a pressure rate that was just about half the league average among tight ends."
Barnwell also explains in the piece that having a reliable blocking tight end is one of the more underappreciated aspects of the NFL in today's world.
For now, though, Oliver and the Vikings are in a happy marriage and are okay if they fly under the radar. If J.J. McCarthy wasn't happy enough having book-end tackles like Christian Darrisaw or Brian O'Neill, adding Oliver to the mix puts their edge protection over the top.

Dodgers Insider Provides Insight into Shohei Ohtani's Rehab Timeline

Dodgers Insider Provides Insight into Shohei Ohtani's Rehab Timeline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shohei Ohtani's initial rehabilitation plan did not have him starting on the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. Advertisement He was initially set to make his first pitching appearance since 2023 after this year's All-Star break. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts then told reporters there was a "north of zero" chance he could return before mid-July. Finally, the news broke late on Sunday night that Ohtani would once again grace an MLB mound in less than 24 hours in the Dodgers' series opener against the San Diego Padres. The move made sense. Ohtani could not go on a traditional rehab assignment – making a few starts in the minor leagues, or even heading to the team's training complex in Arizona for extra work – because it would leave the Dodgers without his potent bat in the lineup. The true reasoning for Ohtani's accelerated timeline, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez, came down to the trust Ohtani had in his own body and, in turn, the Dodgers' trust in Ohtani. Advertisement "They feel like he's so attunely aware of what his body requires and what he needs on a given day, and he's the only one who has ever done this, that there's a trust there," Gonzalez said on Dodgers Territory. "If Shohei Ohtani ultimately told them, 'Look, these sim games are really taxing on my body. I'd rather just do it in a Major League game,' I think they trust him to do it responsibly." Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani (17) enters the dugout after warming up for the game against the San Diego Padres at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Gonzalez was told by Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior that the club's original plan was to have Ohtani pitch in simulated games until he could reach the 60-to-70-pitch range before putting him into a regular-season contest. According to Gonzalez, Ohtani threw 44 pitches in his most recent simulated game before Monday's start. "The Dodgers were adamant, from their perspective, that they didn't want to rush this, regardless of how many pitchers were injured. They were going to just try to absorb this stretch and try to get through it until Blake Snell comes back, until Tyler Glasnow comes back," Gonzalez said. Advertisement "They felt like it was so important for his two-way future, for his chances of being an effective pitcher for years hereafter – not just in this one – that he built up enough endurance, that he strengthened the muscles around his elbow." Gonzalez acknowledged that the Dodgers still have issues regarding the management of their pitchers, given that so many of their starters are hurt. But he believes Ohtani was the source behind his own quick return. "They keep having to do these bullpen games. Their relievers lead the majors in innings. This is not sustainable, but I don't know that they wanted that to guide the Ohtani part of it," Gonzalez said. "I think it was Shohei Ohtani sort of driving this himself." Joe Rogan references Ilia Topuria to highlight that it's 'an amazing time for the sport'

Amidst concern over the UFC's decreasing popularity, Joe Rogan insists the sport is in a great spot. Several super fights such as Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria and Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall have either failed to materialize or are yet to materialize, leaving UFC fans frustrated. But popular podcast host and UFC commentator Rogan thinks skill and talent-wise, MMA is the best it's ever been. He used undefeated, former UFC featherweight champion Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) as an example. "Ilia Topuria, who's fighting Charles Oliveira at the end of the month – that guy is insane. That guy has knocked out two of the greatest featherweights of all time: (Alexander) Volkanovski and Max Holloway," Rogan said on a recent episode of his "Joe Rogan Experience" podcast. "Nobody could knock those guys out at featherweight before. He did, and he made it look easy. He's just on another level from everybody. Now he's moving up to 155 pounds. He decided he cleared out that division, and he's moving up. "There's guys like that, their level is above everybody else's level, and with Ilia, it's everything. It's his submissions, his kicks, his punches, everything. He can do anything. He does everything perfect. All his technique is perfect. He's f*cking driven and ultra confident. This is an amazing time for the sport, man. It's a crazy time because these guys that are coming in with like one fight in the UFC, they look like world-class contenders right away." Topuria takes on Charles Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in the UFC 317 main event on June 28 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).

Eagles star Nolan Smith makes the expected claim in naming the top state for HS Football

Nolan Smith says Georgia produces the best football players One of the most enjoyable aspects of Howie Roseman's evolution has been watching him learn from the mistakes he made in the past. No one has ever accused the Philadelphia Eagles' general manager of being perfect, but have we seen another GM navigate the NFL's constant changes and do so any better? It's hard to think of one. Maybe you've never thought about the following statement this way. Then again, perhaps you have, but it feels like once Howie discovered the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs, things took off. It had been a while since the team plucked talent from two of the SEC's top programs. Before drafting Jalen Hurts in 2020 (and both DeVonta Smith and Landon Dickerson in 2021), the Eagles hadn't drafted a former member of The Tide since taking Freddie Milons in 2002. Before this recent and well-publicized run on UGA stars, the franchise hadn't raided the Dawgs since acquiring Brandon Boykin with a fourth-round pick in 2012. Sure, it may have taken a while, but once Howie caught on, the tidal wave began. Everyone is excited about seeing whether or not Nolan Smith can take another step in 2025, but for now, they'll have to settle for watching him on Exciting Mics. Nolan Smith unsurprisingly names Georgia as the best state for football It feels like this is restated every week now, but the 'exciting whites', Reed Blankenship and Cooper DeJean, may have struck gold with their Exciting Mics podcast. At the time of this story's release, they aren't even 20 episodes in, but something is already evident to everyone viewing. The guys have something special here. A recent episode features Nolan Smith. Everything was on the table, from the recruiting process and Super Bowl memories to his first impressions and the best football state. No one has to guess what his opinions are on the latter topic, do they? It's an interesting theory. Nolan is one of eight Philly Dawgs on the roster. Jalen Carter, Smael Mondon, Lewis Cine, Kelee Ringo, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, and Azeez Ojulari are the other seven. The Birds are also pretty heavy with talent from South Carolina. K.J. Henry, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Will Shipley, and Marcus Tate all played for the Clemson Tigers. However, it will be interesting to see how The Crimson Tide feels about his Georgia theory, considering Jihaad Campbell, Landon Dickerson, Cameron Latu, Byron Young, Tyler Steen, Eli Ricks, Jalen Hurts, and DeVonta Smith all had their start at Alabama at some point. Don't sleep on Pennsylvania, though, Nolan! That state has some ballers too, but again, we can all see why he'd be partial to Georgia.
