Lions call up Ireland prop Clarkson and Scots trio as cover

eNCAa day ago
BRISBANE - The British and Irish Lions added Ireland prop Tom Clarkson to their squad as cover for Saturday's first Test against Australia in Brisbane and called up a trio of Scotland players for a tour match next week.
Ireland tighthead Clarkson will reinforce the front-row options for the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane along with Jamie George.
England hooker George got the call on Saturday after Luke Cowan-Dickie suffered a suspected concussion in the 48-0 win against the AUNZ XV in Adelaide.
The 25-year-old Clarkson is flying in from Lisbon, where he played in the Ireland team that beat Portugal 106-7 on Saturday.
His call-up swells the Irish contingent in the Lions squad, under Ireland head coach Andy Farrell, to 18 players.
Scotland trio Rory Sutherland, Ewan Ashman and Darcy Graham will provide cover for the tour match against the First Nations and Pasifika XV in Melbourne next Tuesday, July 22.
All three started in Scotland's 29-14 defeat to Fiji in Suva at the weekend and are in New Zealand preparing for a match against Samoa in Auckland on Friday.
Graham will miss the match against Samoa after being sent off for a second yellow card against Fiji and will join the Lions squad in Brisbane immediately.
Sutherland and Ashman will fly to Melbourne on Sunday.
Clarkson was given his Ireland debut by Farrell in November and has won eight caps.
His Ireland teammate Jamie Osborne, who can play centre or full-back, is already with the Lions in Brisbane after being summoned from Portugal as cover for Blair Kinghorn, who injured his knee last week.
Scotland's Kinghorn, widely regarded as first-choice Lions fullback, landed awkwardly in the 36-24 win against ACT Brumbies last Wednesday but scans on the knee showed no serious damage.
"We're hopeful that he will take some part in training (this week)," said Lions defence coach Simon Easterby of Kinghorn.
"Then it will be a little bit of a waiting game in terms of whether he's available for the first Test."
The Lions, winners of all five warm-up matches in Australia leading into the first Test, have already lost Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams to a torn hamstring and English fullback Elliot Daly with a broken arm.

Manchester City sign kit deal worth CRAZY money

Manchester City have signed a blockbuster new kit deal with Puma worth a reported £1 billion (R23.9 billion) over the next 10 years. Manchester City's extension of their contract with Puma ranks as the largest kit manufacturing partnership in Premier League history. Having agreed a £65 million per year deal with the German company in 2019, Manchester City's new arrangement is believed to be worth a £100 million per year until 2035, according to British media reports. That figure shatters the £90 million per year deal signed by Manchester United with Adidas in 2023. Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are both reported to have kit deals worth in excess of £100 million per year. 'We joined forces with Puma with the ambition to challenge ourselves and go beyond the expectations. We have achieved this and more over the last six seasons,' City Football Group chief executive Ferran Soriano said. 'Puma have seamlessly integrated into our organisation, and we have enjoyed many historic moments together, engaging fans globally.' Puma chief executive Arthur Hoeld added: 'Puma's partnership with Manchester City has been a great success both on and off the pitch. 'Trophies, a perfect stage for our performance products and commercial success were exceptional.' Manchester City's massive deal comes after the club's first season without major silverware since 2016/17. Pep Guardiola's men finished third in the Premier League after winning the title for the previous four seasons. They also suffered a shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace and crashed out of the recent Club World Cup in the last 16 against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. 'World's oldest marathon runner' dies aged 114 in road accident

MUMBAI - India's Fauja Singh, believed to be the world's oldest distance runner, has died in a road accident aged 114, his biographer said. Singh, an Indian-born British national, nicknamed the "Turbaned Tornado", died after being hit by a vehicle in Punjab state's Jalandhar district on Monday. "My Turbaned Tornado is no more," Fauja's biographer Khushwant Singh wrote on X. "He was struck by an unidentified vehicle... in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja." Singh did not have a birth certificate but his family said he was born on April 1, 1911. He ran full marathons (42 kilometres) till the age of 100. His last race was a 10-kilometre event at the 2013 Hong Kong Marathon when 101, where he finished in one hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. He became an international sensation after taking up distance running at the ripe old age of 89, after the death of his wife and one of his sons, inspired by seeing marathons on television. Although widely regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner, he was not certified by Guinness World Records as he could not prove his age, saying that birth certificates did not exist when he was born under British colonial rule in 2011. Singh was a torchbearer for the Olympics at Athens 2004 and London 2012, and appeared in advertisements with sports stars such as David Beckham and Muhammad Ali. His strength and vitality were credited to a routine of farm walks and a diet including Indian sweet "laddu" packed with dry fruits and home-churned curd. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on social media. "He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world."
