NGT directs chief secretary to institute inquiry into 2024 Chandan Jatra blast
CUTTACK: The major firecracker explosion in which 17 persons died and 25 sustained severe injuries during the Chandan Jatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri on May 29 last year is back in focus with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordering a probe into the 'grave security lapse' that caused it.
The NGT's East Zone was hearing a petition seeking direction to the authorities to take steps to prohibit bursting of crackers during the rituals of Lord Jagannath in Puri. Sanjay Kumar Nayak, a resident of Aska in Ganjam district, filed the petition. Advocates Sankar Prasad Pani and Ashutosh Padhy argued on behalf of the petitioner in virtual mode.
In the order uploaded on Thursday, the bench comprising B Amit Sthalekar (Judicial Member) and Dr Vijay Kulkarni (Expert Member) said, 'We dispose of the petition with a direction to the chief secretary, government of Odisha, to institute an inquiry into the incident and take appropriate action against those found guilty of gross negligence and lapse in taking proper security steps to prevent the occurrence of the incident in question.'
'For future, it is directed that no explosives of any kind shall be permitted in such religious functions where the swell of the crowd is not just in thousands but in several lakhs and even a small lapse can result in loss of lives of lakhs of people. One cannot rule out that such an incident can even be triggered by ill-intentioned and anti-social elements using more lethal explosives other than mere firecrackers,' the bench added.

Unlike Kolkata, where the Iskcon Rath traverses 7 km from Albert Road to the Maidan, the distance between the temple and Mashir Bari, where the Rath will reside for seven days, is less than a kilometre away. Only volunteers will be allowed to pull the chariot. The CM will be present in Digha during the Rath Yatra and will present a golden broom to clean the chariot's path. She is expected to reach Digha on the eve of the event. Vehicle movement in the seaside town will be restricted from that day.

In Gurgaon, task force set up to probe illegalbusinesses on road to Galleria Market
Gurgaon: After the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) intervention in a case concerning illegal commercial activities along the road leading to Galleria Market in Sector 27, deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar announced plans to constitute an inter-departmental team to probe the matter. The team will include officials from MCG, HSPCB, Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Town Planning, and DHBVN, and will inspect the site and submit a detailed report. The action follows a petition by residents, highlighting severe environmental violations such as illegal commercial operations, including illegal use of diesel generator sets, open waste burning and untreated sewage discharge, allegedly causing severe air and noise pollution in the area. Deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar said, "We have taken note of the concerns raised regarding the illegal commercial activities in Sector 27. An inter-departmental team will be formed shortly to examine the entire situation on the ground. Based on their findings, appropriate action will be taken." Puri Jagannath temples servitor murdered, body found on roadside
Last Updated: Puri, Jun 11 (PTI) An 83-year-old servitor of the Jagannath temple in Puri was allegedly murdered on Wednesday, police said. The body of Jagannath Dixit (83), who was a 'supakar' (cook) at the temple, was found in a pool of blood at Rabeni Choura in Gudiashahi, they said. The incident happened amid tight security arrangements for the 'Snan Jatra' festival at the temple. 'Prima facie, it seems to be a case of murder. It could be due to personal enmity. We are probing the incident," SP Vinit Agarwal said. A CCTV footage showed a man leaving Dixit's body on the roadside, police said.
