7 Batang Kali eateries closed over cockroaches, rat droppings, other unhygienic conditions
HULU SELANGOR: Seven restaurant operators were ordered to shut down immediately for 14 days after they were found to have violated hygiene standards, despite repeated reminders and warnings from the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council. The municipal council said the offences were uncovered during Op Suci, a joint operation involving 40 personnel from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Department (JPSPPA), the Enforcement Department, the Licensing Department, and Building Department. The operation, which targeted 18 premises in Batang Kali, showed several serious hygiene breaches. "These included cockroach infestations, rat and frog droppings, unwashed eggs, disorganised and dirty storage areas, and food handlers without valid Food Handler Training Certificates or typhoid vaccinations," the municipal council said in a statement. Other violations included the discharge of wastewater directly into public drains, poorly maintained grease traps and ventilation systems, and food handlers with long fingernails, wearing jewellery, and not using aprons, shoes, or head coverings. Some premises also failed to appoint pest control operators registered with the Pesticides Board. Following the inspection, the seven premises were issued immediate closure notices to carry out thorough cleaning within 14 days. Additionally, JPSPPA issued 30 compound notices under the 2007 Food Establishment By-Laws, totalling RM30,000, with no discounts offered.

MMEA foils attempt to smuggle exotic birds worth RM100,000
BATU PAHAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 1,300 exotic birds, believed to be run by two local men, early yesterday. Batu Pahat Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the birds, estimated to be worth RM100,000, were found on a fibre boat intercepted by a patrol vessel at about 1am. "Checks on the boat uncovered 114 baskets containing murai batu (white-rumped shama) and murai kampung (oriental magpie robin). "The two men, aged 26 and 27, failed to produce documents permitting the export of wildlife. "Both suspects were taken to the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone for further investigation. The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010," he said in a statement last night. Zaini said the success was the result of intelligence gathered on smuggling activities in the waters off Tanjung Laboh, believed to be a key transit point for wildlife trafficking syndicates. He said the smuggling attempt was likely driven by strong market demand, with syndicates often using small boats at night to avoid detection.

Asean-US meeting strengthens regional defence cooperation, says Khaled Nordin
SINGAPORE: The multilateral meeting between Asean defence ministers, Timor-Leste, and United States Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth on Friday is expected to further strengthen regional defence cooperation, said Malaysia's Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue here on Friday. "The meeting served as a platform for Asean countries to exchange views on regional security challenges, especially in the Indo-Pacific, and to explore opportunities to strengthen defence cooperation with the United States," Khaled shared in a Facebook post. He also shared Malaysia's perspective as the current Asean Chair, highlighting two major regional issues — the Myanmar crisis and the South China Sea situation — during his meeting with Hegseth. "Solutions to these two critical issues must be led and driven by Asean through an Asean-led and Asean-driven framework," he said. Khaled also stressed the importance of all parties upholding Asean's core values and principles to ensure the continued security, sovereignty, and stability of the region. Meanwhile, during the meeting, Hegseth highlighted common security challenges and reaffirmed the US' strong commitment to the region, according to a statement by Singapore's Defence Ministry. He said that the US believed in practical cooperation and strong partnerships underpinned by shared values. The US would continue its engagement with the Southeast Asia region and enhance defence cooperation with Asean countries, including through the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus). Hegseth also raised cybersecurity as a key emerging domain for Asean-US cooperation, such as through the ADMM Cybersecurity and Information Centre of Excellence (ACICE).
